I was fortunate enough to visit Persepolis about 15 years ago, and as both a Persian and a lifelong history nerd (Classics major), it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I am grateful for my heritage and the history of my people. We’ve been truly blessed.
Persepolis is a Greek name just like all Greek cities using the suffix polis like alexantroupolis, konstantinoupolis.. .etc Names are given with a purpose not by chance.
I saw Persepolis in 1970-71. It was amazing. At the time, very lonely and great. It seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. I lived in Iran then and saw many magnificent things and places. The details used in the many ways of decorating buildings. The arts they were masters of. After you get used to the aesthetic, it was all so beautiful. I feel honored to have been able to live there, I will never forget it,
Before it got to be a islamist country like now! In the 70´s woman where free and not oppressed excluded like prisoner in there own country! I would love to visit Iran, but as a woman you are not safe as well as for a westerner due to the hatred they have and dark racism towards other countries people and other religions (we are hated infidels in ISlam) It is so sad :( Therefore you do not see multicultural there or any white people and woman (not covered up) at the bazar...only the Iran people there!

You must be an absolute illiterate because there are literally thousands of videos by Westerners in Iran and many of them are women.
vancitytehranstlouis Well said...lots of people unfamiliar with the region have such false perceptions 😔 What you see reported where people are burning US flags, etc. is theatre. Did it happen? Yes. I wish you had mentioned that the ancient Persians had constructed an earlier version of the Suez Canal. It was started by the Pharaoh Necho, but finished by the Persians 100 years later and was in use for 500 years. Quite an achievment.
I've always admired my civilized Persian ancestors. Cyrus, the Great, always have been loved & never forgotten by Iranians. He issued the first charter of human rights. He freed the slaves, established racial equality and declared that all people had the right to choose their own religion.

The Persians have only been forgotten because too few of us today have any knowledge of History at all. Schools in particular have an appalling record of failure with teaching History (as well as the 3Rs) and when they do it is 'Cherry Picked' for political reasons. I am an amateur historian I learned SOME history as an elective in High School but most of my knowledge was gained in my own time outside the so-called 'education' system.
D. Smith I guess it is mostly because "Persia" Changed it's name to Iran in 1940s. We can find Greece amd Egypt on the map, but not Persia!Hence many tend to forget it! And Persians is not an accurate term, Achaemenid is a lot more accurate (for Persians have built 6 empires in the history)
Lion King & Eleni 1979: Please allow me to correct you: (I am tourguide in Athens and born-raised in PELLA, MACEDONIA)/ The name "Persia" is from the Greeks given, the "Persians" never used this word for their country. (they use Aiyran, Aryan etc from the area Aria. "the region "Persia" (Greek word) Parsha in Persian, is the South of Iran and spoke Fars 9about 50% of the land). The ancient Persian language is lost. After the Munghal-Mongolian invasions in North the population was mixed in North. As for the ^ (six) "Persian Empires"...I do not agree. The first was the "Achemenid", the second was the 'Parthian of Arsakids (known from the wars V Roman Empire), and the third 3rd "Sassanids Empire" (destroyed by the Byzntine Emperror Heracleius) around 625 Ad. After that, the Moslim Challifats invated the area of Iran and later they became Shija Muslims. (Pls correct me if I'm wrong)
I am an Iranian (Persian) and I believe every old country has some good & bad things in its past. One of the major things that makes me to be proud of Persia is the great Cyrus. After capturing Babylon and entering the city he ordered something to be written on a cylinder about his rules regarding the citizens of his empire. His order and his mentality was a kind of masterpiece in human wrights. This Cylinder is kept in the British Museum and the translation of his writings is in the United Nations as the First Charter of the Human Rights.
Babylon was full of sin. Prophet Isaiah for told what would happen to Babylon 200 years prior. Cyrus dried up the river that surrounded Babylon and his armed walked right through the gate that was lifted open.
If its the same Persian I am thinking of, he did something quite amazing and nearly unheard of. He would often allow the areas he took over under their own cultural and religious norms, only demanding the taxes and possible soldiers for duty in return for protection.
I had the chance to visit Persepolis in 2005. Very impressive! Especially the view over the city from the hill where Artaxerxes III was buried. Also the museum is worth to be visited. In the western world everybody talks about the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans but if ever you have a chance to visit Iran don't miss the opportunity to go and see this great legacy of the Persian empire! These images will forever be present in my memory! Cheli Chube!!!
My dear Persia is mentioned many times in old Bible and Queen Esther, prophet Daniel, and more lived in Persia and died and buried ,it is sooo facinating

I appreciate the input from those who have knowledge of these things to further my understanding. In Scripture we are told that Cyrus is anointed of God, and that Darius and Artaxerxes both followed suit in just manner toward Judah, otherwise, along with the Medes, it is known as a warring and oppressive nation, the Red Horse of Revelation, that spilt much blood during a relatively short reign like Babylon. May fall, more will possibly, but I believe we are evolving to a point where only natural worldwide cataclysm is going to do so. The next step will be, in my opinion there will be about 3 steps, concentration into super-countries. An example would be the hypothetical joinging of North and South America into one country, Africa and Western Europe, The middle east and Russia, The orient joining together, as well as Australia and India (the combos could be different). The second step being futher concentration into two or three super-countries, and the third being a One-World Government. Just a theory.
@@mattyconchatty Of course - do you really mean that China is part of the "orient" (same as many poor development countries which tend to lean to rather temporal Russia block with some arabic despocies or on the other side India?). This is ridicule.

You don't fight evil with evil. Alexander regreted burning Persepolis shortly after, but the damage had already been done. Greetings from Greece to our old frienemies 🇬🇷🤝🇮🇷
@S U They were one hundred percent Aryan. Iranian genetics are most similar to those of Italy, Greece and Denmark. Ancient wars were exactly like today's wars waged by the extravagance of kings and rulers, not wars between peoples.
As a Persian, I love talking mess with my Greek friends about our ancient rivalry 😋 With that being said, I’ve been a nerd for antiquity since I was a kid, so much so that I was reading Greek mythology when most kids my age were playing in the sandbox or the jungle gym. The Greek called anyone who didn't speak Greek a Barbarian. The very term meant just that, "someone who doesn't know Greek". These people were considered culturally less sophisticated because of course (and every culture in the world does this) they considered their own culture superior to others. No doubt the Persians thought the same of the Greeks, and the Egyptians of the Romans, the Romans of the Egyptians, etc. etc.

The Greeks were in absolutely constant contact with 'that part of Africa'. All this stuff is so easy to find out, from regular, reliable, history sites.

Saad Rizvi Additionally with Islam cane great terror. The execution of Mostafa Salehi, poor guy had two young kids, and his only crime was protesting. Any Iranian who claims to still be Muslim is denying their true culture. How can you turn a blind eye to when terror is committed like that?
Right back at the start when we were viewing the ruins for the first time I was strongly reminded of Karnak (until we got to the winged beasts). But that trip to the middle east didn't include Iran - and oh how I wished it had (still do but at that time borders were closed - hopefully some day)

Watching this makes me both proud and depressed. Look at what we once were and look what we are now. The worst thing that happened to Iran was the Muslims conquests.
True but don't forget. It was mongols who destroyed all of ancient Persian libraries. Imagine if we didn't lose all of those historical information. Iran just needs to be non religious country.
Eli za Yea but my anger can’t go that far back. Also Alexander the Great ruined Persepolis. I’m trying to focus on our recent issues. Iran was on its way to being a prosperous nation under the Shah. I also never said that Islam is evil. My response reply was not recorded and is somehow lost. I meant to say that regular Muslims rarely speak up when acts of violence or atrocities are committed. We need more people speaking up.
@@nostalgia545 I agree, I'm not defending Muslim at all nor hate them, I just dislike Islam. Their are good muslims and bad ones like every other religion or race. The ones who speak up are the ex muslims or non practicing ones, thank goddess for that at least. Overall, iran needs to let go of Islam or at most stop being an Islamic state. The Shah wasn't that great but he was way better than what Iran has now. Shah's father was the one who turned Iran around and helped people, he did a lot for iranians and for Iran.
Eli za The Shah gave women the right to vote before they even asked for it in 1963. American women have only had the right to vote for 100 years since August 26, 2020. Alice Paul and other suffragettes went to jail and were force fed when they rejected food. They only got the right to vote after Tennessee became the 26 state to pass the law to give women the right to vote and congress then enacted it. Imagine the Shah, who many call a dictator, giving women the right to vote without all that fighting and campaigning that Alice Paul did. Additionally he made it illegal for a man to have more than one wife. This was so that women from religious families wouldn’t be forced into it against their will. We can’t just give them the choice to be a second wife since some women might not have the choice. Finally, he made the hijab illegal. He gave women the chance to have freedom without pressure form their families. To me he was a feminist before the word feminist even existed. His wife built a colony for those suffering from leprosy to give them the chance to live good lives without infecting others. These are things many people don’t know about the Shah and people just criticize him because it’s the easy thing to do.
I didn’t know Persepolis was a lost city. Every time I visited this palace, I wondered what it would have looked like if Alexander had not destroyed it. How it would have looked as a great museum, how people dressed then, the decorations. Recently I saw a video of making of Persepolis which showed all that. It was beautiful. For the rest of world, Alexander may be the “Great”, for us Persian he was a destroyer, wild thug who destroyed this beautiful city.

Of course the Greeks plagiarized many things and wrote the history to their advantage but there are enough information for the sound mind to be able to differentiate what came from where and so on!!
@@ROYAL-BLUE-GHANA pars is a Provence , he wasn't from a tribe he was king of a city state, darius was from susa , cyrus from anzan or anshan spelling differs. Their civilization certainly ranks with Egypt's but the name 'Persian' is an insult assigned them by their Greek enemies. 'Iranian' was assigned them by Winston Churchill during WWII. They do and always have called themselves 'Aryan'. The only thing Germans have in common with the Aryans is the universe word 'Mama' that has come down to us all.
@@raymondsaquet2922 I think there are many more words in common than just "Mama". For example father, daughter, brother etc. I'm actually looking into it and then and there are extremely many similarities (cognates).

I was fascinated by the fact there are records of what men were paid. Different skills different rates. And the design, the skills, the history, so many cultures, the gate of all nations. Grace, ducipline. How far we've fallen!
Fun fact: Alexander the Great is portrayed as a hero and survivor in almost all Medieval Persian poems! But in Zoroastrian texts, he is often referred to as the "Gujastak" which means Accursed!
Well of course he would be and Alexander would most likely be proud of the animosity of his enemies. A hero to one is Satan to the other, that's normal.
where are those poems? I won't take the word of Greek you would provide the evidence that clearly states "he is mentioned as hero in majority of medieval poems in Persia" .Then I will tell you the solid fact of Why you are lying?
@Usman Siddiq (this literally took less than one minute to find) Setting out to conquer the Persian Empire in 334 BC, Alexander the Great lamented that no poet would narrate his history and adventures. Yet, more than 1,000 years later, Alexander was re-identified as "Iskandar" by Persia's two greatest epic poets: Firdawsî and Nizâmî. Historian and professor Michael Barry bridges the concepts of art, mysticism, and poetry in this illustrated talk exploring the blending of sober history with heroic tales. mediacentral.princeton.edu/media/The+Persian+Romance+of+Alexander+the+GreatA+From+Greek+Epic+to+Persian+Myth%2C+Poetry%2C+Mysticism%2C+and+Art/1_wn6pbnfz
