Nice of BYD for answering 3 of the most obvious questions right on the back of the car: 'What does BYD stand for?', 'Is it an EV?', and 'How quickly can it accelerate?' Convenient!
Except the founder of the company said in an interview that he was looking for a name for his company, and all of his ideas were taken by other companies so he just went with random letters😂😂 hence BYD

the 0 to 60 for power is genius, perfectly clear, and very specific, also perfectly comparable, ignores the big car with big engine is still just slow problem too.
Yeah but I’m not worried about my big V8 engine spontaneously combusting because a small rock hit underneath. I also know it’ll start up and run in freezing temperatures and that fuel is literally minutes away wherever I am. And that I can fill the tank in less than 5 minutes. And if my engine or transmission fails it won’t cost north of $20,000 to repair it. But yeah those are some good zero to 60 times.
@@noahknight4039 you really want to claim reliability or cheapness on a v8? you could easily choose an actual good ice and would agree, but with those monsters, my bet would be on the electric stuff, even with all their issues.
Chinese here, so, BYD or 比亚迪(the Chinese name for it) it doesn’t mean anything 😂 their CEO admitted it in an interview, he was originally going for a different name, but it was already registered, so he was fk this, and made up a name that means absolutely nothing in Chinese. And when BYD started getting exported, they made up the whole Build Your Dreams thing so they could explain what the heck is BYD stands for 😂
BYD is a BMW knockoff thats why they chose something to sound and look kinda similar, even their badge was a round blue/white BMW knockoff. But then again what isn't a knockoff in China, right?
That's an interesting take but a different backstory is that the founder was going for an LG type brand.... LG = Life's Good. The Chinese name Bi Ya Di actually doesn't mean anything, it just sounds like BYD.
@@kostaskorovesis5074 BYD is actually a lithium battery company, they did that for more than a decade before they started making cars. Some correction: 1. BYD does make ICE cars. Although they are phasing pure-gas cars out, they still offer a lot of hybrid cars. 2. In fact the Han itself has a hybrid version, that's why there's no storage area in the engine bay. It uses a series-hybrid system, where the engine turns a generator to recharge the battery instead of driving the wheels directly.

The exterior styling, to me, is a highlight of this car. Too many times these days a car company will try a "look at me!!" approach that just comes off as weird and garish. Sharp lines for no real reason, a front end that looks like it's been in an accident, and so on. The styling here is subtle, and I like it.
Oh yeah chinese ford taurus will definatelly win car of the year for it's styling. Also I love how model 3 accel is 5, but this car is 8, even though theyre both ev's with shitty performance. (yes they got low 0-60, but for how long? 2 runs? 3 runs?) "i can hear road noise and the build is cheap plastics, yep thats a 7 on quality and comfort" so far this whole video looks like a fat bag for doug and a plug for BYD. All of the negatives are like "oh the build quality is cheap plastic, BUT THATS BECAUSE THE CHINESE HAVE CHAUFFEURS." yeah not because the car is a shitbox with as many cheap "look at me" features as possible. @@DualityElite While that may be true for Chinese cars in general, BYD's 'Blade' batteries are actually pretty well reputed. The tech they use apparently makes their batteries much safer than average, to the extent that Tesla and Toyota have begun buying batteries from them in some markets. I really can’t believe it - I watch your reviews from Brazil and only rarely get to see let alone try out 90% of the cars you review. Having said that I did get the opportunity this Saturday of test driving the BYD Han as well as the Song and the Yuan. I was interested to find myself fascinated by the same quirks and features and you failed to mention that the Navigation app on the Han Infotainment in portrait mode was awesome. I also am proud to realize that I also spotted some really cheap plastics in hard to stare at areas that betrayed a less than Mercedes / BMW fit an finish. Generic or no I did like the designs especially of the Yuan Plus that you would LOVE - the design quirks on the interior would freak you out! Best
Yuan or Yuan Plus? Because the Yuan Plus is currently being exported all over the world as the Atto 3, and selling like hotcakes. The current gen BYD vehicles like the Yuan Plus and Seal have much more cohesive design inside and out compared to their earlier green vehicles like the Han and Song.
@@tren133 the Plus I believe! The Fisker Ocean has a rotating screen similar to this, although it’s limited to portrait only while driving and only goes into landscape when Netflix, RU-vid, etc are launched
Had one of these as a rental recently. Most of the stuff buried in the on screen menus can be controlled by voice - the sunroof, seat heaters etc. Say “Hey BYD” to activate then utter the command.
I've always thought that the stereotype of Chinese products being poor in quality is driven by their customers. If a US, and other, companies go to a Chinese manufacturer and say I want you to build this for me and I'm going to warranty it for one year, they say Yes... we can do that. If you wanted them to build something that could be warrantied for 10 years, they could probably do that as well. It wouldn't be as inexpensive, which is why US companies turn to China for manufacturing in the first place.
What you said is so true. When people whine about the quality of Chinese made products, 99% of 'em fail to realize manufacturers only produce products according to specifications of order sheets, nothing more nothing less. Its the greedy entrepreneurs that decide bringing in unreliable products into the States.
I think that stems more from the Chinese "knock-off" products that they are notorious for producing. I mean people are more than happy to purchase quality products like iPhones that are, yes, made in China, but they'll laugh at the cheap iPhone knock-off made by some counterfeit operation in China!
I love it! I really hope Doug reviews more of these unknown and weird cars, from all over the world. There are tons of them, especially now, in the electric car era.
Not going to lie, i actually appreciate some of thr features on this car. The rotating screen, the front and interior camara with cover. I even appreciate the seemingly bizare 1% increments on the sun roof, it would let you really dial in how much sun comes in which would be good if you have a child in the back or something. Assuming you would at some point be able to operate it with voice commands increments of 1-100 would give you much more precise control than increments of 10 or even "closed, half, full" which i feel would be the norm otherwise.
u can do almost all these things with voice comment, NOW. he just didn't test it. the menu is there for redundancy option and for less tech savy users.

I.e you don't have the money for the Audi S8, but the A3 looks similar from the front lol, so you get that instead of a civic. Other than that, what is the reason a brand needs to have it's distinct identity. I think it would be much more important that every model they sell to look good, instead of looking the same. I like this car a lot. Looks good from every angle. Doesn't catch peoples eye like a Pagani, but it doesn't need to either. Besides, does anyone take pictures of the E-class (or what ever Doug has) on streets? I highly doubt it. and even if you do find it generic, at least it doesn't look bad, unlike many other new cars. @@Davorox1 You have a good eye for the Han's exterior stying cues! It is one of the first cars styled under the direction of BYD's new design chief, whose previous job was head of design for ... Audi.
In China this car is priced similar to the Model 3 (which is a class smaller), and around half the price of an E-class / 5 series (gas version). That explains why in China it's the best selling model in its sector. Unfortunately such pricing would not be possible as an import. It should also be noted that the model tested here is last gen. Newer model has a smoother tail design and better suspension, among other changes.
I personally think that if Chinese automakers would bring their incredibly value packed models to the US it would be a fantastic thing for our car market. Great video! Many quirks in this car, loved how they just stuck with the 0-6 time for badging, hilarious. The first time I've heard of BYD is when the pandemic hit they were the company that CA contracted with to make lots of masks. Apparently, a large and versatile company to make both masks and electric vehicles.
Also, LA bought a fleet of all eletric city buses off BYD. They could barely make it up hill with a full passenger load and caught fire at an alarming rate. To the point that the City of LA parked them and tax payer millions literally up in smoke in the interest of "going green". Again. And again.
BYD is going to get really big in South America in the coming years, they're bringing the first actually affordable electric car down here at less than half the price of the current cheapest electric. By the way, this car is going to be a small 4 door hatchback, something the US has less and less of each year, but it's the most popular type of car in countries like Brasil.

MG tried coming to Brazil in 2011 but they failed really fast and really hard, like no one at all bought them, so I'm pretty sure they don't sell here anymore
very enjoyable review. a couple of misconceptions: - PRICE: this only costs $45k in China, so it's designed to compete with C-class, not E-class. the export price is nearly double, which is a huge problem for China brands until they start overseas manufacturing. - REAR COMFORT: that's because of in-laws, not people being chaufferred.
To be honest, in the domestic market, the Model 3 P is the primary competitor for this one, and it costs around 45k USD in China. Clearly, these two vehicles serve different purposes, with one targeting performance enthusiasts and the other catering to those who seek comfortable daily transportation. However, it's surprising to hear that its competitors in the United States are the A6, 5 Series, and E-Class.
BYD HAN starts from 32,600 USD while new C class for example starts from 45k$. For this car to compete with the even E class segment is just crazy lol. Its kinda what Skoda does in europe with its Superb, starts from 35k but sits as an inbetween C and E class in a sort of half segment that doesnt exist. I have a feeling BYD will be doing just that.
the HAN is bigger than the MODEL3, maybe 2 to 3 feet longer... and built quality just blows tesla away. i've seen many HANS, in this particular color... the car is just stunning.

I love the Fun, Creative Innovative features in the Car. Total Shame US and Canada Govt, self proclaim Free Capitalist Country, blocking Chinese companies from offering great goods to the citizens.
As a control freak, I appreciate that BYD was thoughtful enough to make the roof window adjustment increments by one. Moreover, the Chinese woman’s voice is soothing. It's probably extremely expensive to design and manufacture that so it won't break in a few months to a year. This car is nice overall, but that screen looks like it's barely attached to the dash and I'd bet one firm tap would cause it to break off.
@@tbr2109 I've actydriven a BYD Atto3 in New Zealand and besides some questionable design decisions (particularly in the interior) the build quality is pretty damn good. I'd say it's comparable to anything Mazda would produce. The rotating screen, I think, is mostly a gimmick as I could discern no functional difference between the landscape mode and portrait mode. They could have saved a few bucks by scrapping the motorization and UI programming time. But! The build quality of the screen is solid, it's not flimsy at all.
@@tbr2109 in addition to expense it would also potentially get in the way of having buttons as the layout of physical buttons may get in the way of rotating mechanism

Then I'd take that over the ability to rotate the screen
I'd love a wagon version (Since having more than one car is too expensive, I want the most utility I can). I think I've seen a test version of a wagon floating around online.
BYD is getting increasingly more common in Sweden, especially their SUVs and even electric buses for public transport. There are a lot of chinese brands coming here atm, like Maxus, Xpeng, Nio etc. They have cheap leasing options on their cars also. We will see what the future holds for them
Doug, stop wasting your time on EVs made in China. Most US buyers don’t want to buy anything from China. Your money is helping the CCP toward its goal of world domination. I would never buy a Chinese EV, EV battery, or motor. I really like swivel main screen, motorized rear seats, and rear arm rest screen. Tesla should consider these features.
It would be interesting to see his take on the other end of the market. To my knowledge BYD aren't selling in the U.K. but MG is one of the fastest growing brands.
coming soon here in New Zealand. one of the reasons why i love my country is because of the relaxed car market here, get some of the most qwerky cars here.
Compared to the other "Dynasty" series cars, the BYD Han is relatively recent, having made its debut back in 2020. So, there is a high chance we could see the car in the US as-is.
I'm all for healthy competition, to be honest. Also, that infotainment screen being able to rotate between Portrait and Landscape is such a small detail but I think it's probably one of the best ones. That's how it should be. Stop having fixed ugly screens, let people decide what they want, we do it for phones, we should be able to do it for our car screens too. I have a hunch that alot of automakers may start copying that idea now, or at least, they should.
The same goes for ambient lighting. It's very stupid how automakers will force you to have a few little boring colors. Let people choose any color. Start installing better and higher quality ambient lighting, it's 2023.
i think they should do a step further and copy what another chinese car was doing: 3 piston tiltable screen, so you can adjust how much it faces you. This is very useful for when the sun hits the screen, you can just grab the screen and tilt it away or rotate it
Love seeing Doug taking on BYD for the first time. When I was in China and got into a DiDi (the Chinese Uber basically), it was this Han and I was really impressed by this car's comfort level and some of the little interesting design details. It's also cool to see people's opinions about Chinese cars around world, they are not as bad as you might think.

Get this: The BYD cars typically allow(-ed? I'm not sure whether new firmware is gonna lock down on these) users to install whatever they please on the Android-based control pad, and the user community with BYD-licensed SDK managed to give the cars some incredible extended features with homebrew. It's like a Nintendo DS that you can drive on the road!
That's actually awesome, that opens up so many amazing possibilities! You could have custom skins if you don't like the default look, and add useful apps that are literally the same as what you have on your phone. Really cool.
this is the best feature of our BYD Atto3 - being able to install android apps. Its locked down in some markets, but not others. The info system is so fast and capable, streaming youtube vids (while parked) speeds up the EV recharging process.
Outside of Teslas, this is the first time I've seen a car on your channel where the infotainment system is fast and responsive. Normally they always look slow and laggy which would drive me nuts. This one looks great, it's great to finally see another car maker take this aspect seriously.
Tesla use a Linux-based OS on their infotainment system. I believe BYD uses a fork of android, hence the snappyness. Most brands use their in-house engine and yeah, the performance in them is really questionable. I can't understand why don't they use android or Linux and have great infotainment experiences.
21:10 CORRECTION: It's actually more accurate to say they don't make PURE GASOLINE-POWERED cars anymore. Since 2021 they have been pushing plug-in hybrid models as the only models that use gasoline engines. The lineup is categorized into the DM-i and the DM-p types.
I thought that the USA was an open and free market as their politicians say, I'm living in Ecuador a 3rd world country BYD sells its vehicles here, this model for example for approximately $30,000. & the Delphin model for $25,000 and it has that screen, it is just as fast. What a shame for the USA

The strange thing is nearly all the many Teslas sold in the U.K. recently are made in China. I think a lot of it is perception. Tesla = "I bought this because it is better than a BMW and I'm saving the planet". MG "I bought this because it was cheaper than a VW and BTW have you noticed it is an EV".
It has a lot to do with quality control and bringing them here is not wise as they have been a huge problem in China - so lets not import more problems

Aging Wheels should get one to go with his Wheego and Coda. Before Tesla there were loads of strange EVs sold in small quantities including Mercedes B class with Tesla motors. Charging infrastructure wasn't a problem with those as the only charging option was a domestic wall plug !
in my country, this car is just over 25-30k new and can be had for low 20's for a used car with under 15k miles, while the e class, a6 and 5 series are all in the 60k range. its extremely popular among the uber drivers and the lower middle class people. great value for money!
Seeing how all these electric cars are a pretty new thing, if they built up a bit of a presence in the US, I would consider buying a BYD for the right price. Also, let's not forget they've been in the battery business for a while. So, if their battery tech is proven, even more of a reason to get one. More competition is a good thing.
i actually find the features very interesting! The main thing that will matter is the quality and reliability of the vehicle. And the chinese brand has their work cut out for them to go against lexus and mercedes and bmw and audi given the perceived views of a lot of other chinese products.
I could see something like this being sold as a partnership car for companies who don't want to develop their own electric cars fully from the ground up. I'm a fan of the fit and finish
until you discovered the fact that this car is build on a very old camry platform with some modifications, and I think it also explained why this car doesn’t handling well
Yeah, but it's a EU pricing, which adds: a 10% for duty tax, and around 20%+ of VAT on top of that, and probably some other taxes as well, so it's immediately a 60-65k, not even including shipping cost form China and any other Europe operation costs, like dealership, or certification (which is California lvl or above) etc. So 70-80k $ is actually pretty normal.
@@johnsmith-cw3wo I’m not a fan of electric vehicles at all. My thoughts are hydrogen vehicles zero mining needed, no range issues if we use current gas station networks as hydrogen refill centers, No major worries of them silly 20 day after crash battery fires that spontaneously happen. Hydrogen only expels clean pure H2O and comes from the most abundant source not only on this planet but the entire friggen universe. Refilling would be easy only potential for injury is a leaking tank the high to low pressure escape would cause freezing like how an AC compressor works or using a can of compressed air how it gets cold but time 1000. Crash is no concern again as long as the tank is shrouded for capture the pressure drop freeze. It’s like a no brained compared to plugging cars into a 1950’s design ac grid that’s already barely keeps up on its best day. And then drive somewhere and worry can I make it or do I need to find a plug for an hour.
I'd like a budget version of this car. Cheap plastic interior, but give me those fun features. Not the karaoke, but the rotating screen is a great idea. Being able to easily save video from the cameras. Those are neat ideas, and I'd like to see more ideas like those in cars. Variety is great. And sure, if the karaoke is there, you bet we'll use it on road trips! lol
A few important things Doug did not mention: BYD is a battery company. It has virtually no experience in car-making. However, it's "blade battery" is said to be the safest in the industry, and BYD can make EVs at a lower cost than any potential competitors because it produces its own batteries, the most expensive component of an EV. Warren Baffett currently owns 6% of its stocks. BYD outsold Tesla in 2022 and Tesla has decided to use BYD batteries on its cars. This is just the beginning.
BYD has long proud history of Auto manufacturing with many firsts to market features. Some Say BYD founder's ancestors invested first car in Chona. BYD has First EV, first carioke, first best safest car, first AI assist in car. Others copy, but never measure up to BYD greatness. All smiles up BYD Han
@@michaelcondon8286 Thank you for pointing out. I knew these facts and the history of the company. When I said BYD has no experience in car-making, I meant they've never really developed engines and other major components by themselves like most other auto makers did. The founder is a great engineer and visionary himself, with the guts to invest and take the risk of going bankrupt to develop the best battery by initially making cheap low-end cars to get the funds, and he succeeded after two decades of hard work. BYD deserves the success, and now they're ready to show us more innovations. As for myself, I would love to have a BYD Seal.
An enjoyable review Doug. All joking aside, the BYD Atto3 , a small electric SUV, is selling really well here in NZL. I've checked it out and considered purchasing one, but there are too many Chinese quirks in the vehicle at present for me but it is very competitively priced. Cheers from AKL.
@@nima6150 The Atto 3 has a fairly generic compact crossover exterior, but the interior design is rather wild. It's got this rippled dash design meant to evoke muscle fibers, air vents shaped like free weights, door handles shaped like barbells, weird rotating switch to open the door, and guitar strings along the door pockets. Doug would probably suffer a stroke trying to film every single interior quirk in the Atto 3.
Here in Uruguay BYD is the leading brand in electric vehicles. I had the opportunity to try the Han and the Tang. They are exceptional vehicles. The clear sign of the superiority of the Chinese industry in this matter (and many others).
Honestly the camera features are one gen from being a hit in the US. Underground artists are using the back up camera on their cars to shoot segments of music videos in the US already, I can totally see the ad campaign for byd style cameras working here.
Never been a huge fan of electric cars.. but this one looks really nice and I love the interior. I’d honestly totally consider one of these if I’m ever in the market for an EV, and if they ever decide to bring them here lol.
Outside of the US BYD is gaining quite some popularity, what attracts most people is their reasonable price EVs with better interio than the competion. The Han is their more luxury targeted car, they also have a competitor to the model 3 which will be the one that sells the most.
