My worry is what effect this stuff will have on the longevity of cars (especially from smaller/new/untested brands). In 15 years the battery and motors will probably be easy enough to replace but the screens and electronics may make replacement parts acquisition and installation a hell, or in some cases impossible.

I have no idea how some of it passes regulatory approval. Requiring use of a screen for essential car functions should count as distracted driving as you can't find them by feel and are required to take your eyes off the road. This stuff should be illegal IMO

Model Y is literally a death trap since you CANNOT open the rear doors manually meaning, if the power goes out due to an accident, little Johnny and Janie are going to burn to death since it requires a specialized tool AND at least 30 minutes to open each door. How this is even remotely legal in America is beyond me.

There needs to be a regulation that mandates certain physical buttons that are commonly used or at least make them top level icons on the screen with no need for going into a submenu. My wife's Legacy drives me nuts that even though certain icons, like the heated seats, are right on the screen but touching it still makes you go into another screen. At least it has buttons for adjusting the temperature.

My honest opinion is that buttons are way superior over screens, yea packing away features that are rarely used to clean up the interior is nice, but the climate controls, seat controls, mirror controls, reading lights and similar stuff you quickly wanna flick on, or adjust when reversing, switching driver, and cooling down/heating up as you feel cold or hot Edit: Wow, it definitely doesn’t seem like I’m alone in my disgust of replacing traditional well made and really useful buttons with a cheapish feeling screen, I wish traditional manufacturers like Mercedes would stick with their beautiful well designed button filled interiors to stand out in the future
@Shiinamusiclyricssubs

my main problem is the tactile feedback. In colder climate it is very useful to be able to turn on some climate controls with gloves on without looking at it; On a screen it's almost impossible. the thing is, cars are a tactile environment. that will not change for a long long while simply because driving REQUIRES your eyes on the road as much as humanly possible. How many accidents involving death were due to a driver taking their eyes off the road for even a second or two? I think my biggest pet peeve of all time is doing away with tactile buttons, dials, and switches, things u can find by feel and memory, ti touch screens, a smooth surface which u have little idea of whether or not u made an adjustment, though some now include vibration, its still not good enough. (vibrations can happen anywhere, how do u know how much u have adjusted something or whether or not u just switch stations?) I don't know why people think HUGE touch screens are necessary (I'm looking at you Tesla) or why we need to take our eyes off the road (like this Lucid) to make (some) adjustments, though I happily tip my hat to lucid for including more buttons and switches, still, does the screen need to be at your knees???
@AndrewTSq
@AndrewTSq 2 года назад
touchscreens are just cost-saving meassures for the manufactors. every button you add is atleast a dollar extra + the operator needs to install it + extra wires going to the button. And then we have the buyer who thinks it sounds technical advanced with touchscreens and happily even pay extra for it even tough its cheaper to produce. (producing 1 million cars, with atleast 20 buttons saved is 20 million they "saved")
@wwlittlejOfficial
@wwlittlejOfficial 2 года назад
@@AndrewTSq Touchscreens also have a high cool factor, but regardless, nothing should be mass implemented without safety first. I'm not saying do away with touchscreens, I'm saying at least a minimum of regard to what's safe. Also dash buttons closely wired to the dash "brain" interface, not remotely as costly as u might believe, I would easily guess adding maybe a $100 or 2 to cost. Which on a 40k car is not something u an actually feel. Many cars manufs make buttons and such in house, so plastic button and dials might just pennies, depending on the quality of such (heavier more solid feeling buttons and switchs would be more costly, obviously.) Whittle that down to essentials, or multi function, u add very little to cost, again focus on safety.

And then they watch them to see how difficult it is and how long it takes them to figure something out. Leaving some controls easily accessible via buttons is important. Another thing to take into account is how easy is it to operate certain controls without taking your eyes off the road, this is where tactile buttons are far more superior to screen only implementations. Tesla are not in a "minimalist design rabbit hole". They are in a "make your car as cheap as possible to increase margins rabbit hole". Somehow you got to pay for Musks failing, stupid ideas (like Boring), the whoopie cushions inside the cars... Sure, it might be dangerous to make something as tiny as turning on the wipers take several clicks on a display that is so low that the driver can´t focus on the road, but Elon needs to feed his gigantism so his hyped up customers buy these terribly designed (from a technical design view), terribly built, overpriced cars and call his cost cutting measures that clearly mean danger to the consumer as well as other people on the road "minimalist design". That´s comparable to calling a prison cell "great affordable housing". They made 1.6 billion in 2020 just off EV credits (selling them to other companies) which completely outweighed their 721 million they made in net income. If they didn't sell these credits, they would be losing a bunch of money, you know why? Because they lose money every time they make a car. I don't understand where this misconception came from. I was never impressed by Tesla's styling. But the first time I saw a Lucid Air in the lane next to me (Los Angeles), I was all "WANT!" It's way beyond my price range, but if I could afford it, I'd rather have one of these than, say, a McLaren or a Lamborghini.

Don't get me wrong, the model s is still awesome, but I just found myself smiling through most of this video at the little clever features and additions that the tesla, and almost every other modern car, seems to lack. His background at Lotus and Jaguar shine through here with the fit and finish. Also working alongside the head designer of the Audi A8 and the man responsible for the 4th generation MX5, Derek Jenkins, means this car could be an absolute winner over the tesla for build quality

This one ticks all the boxes and I think Lucid have nailed it. The exterior, interior looks, performance, ride, cabin space and trunk space are epic (you get two trunks), range... everything is bang on mark. That two tone paint or silver roof just puts it above the rest. This car looks like it was built with passion and quality instead of some plasticky thing pushed out of an assembly line like Tesla and Ford, GM, etc. My only complaint is the cabin material could do with some nice wood trims. Lets hope they don't mess it up in customer service and dealership network. They have done the hardest part, now just need to learn from Lexus customer care and they will take off big time.

Luxury peaked in 1969 and 1970. Quiet, comfortable and way more than capable of the 3 digits on the speedo. The luxury land barges of those years have not been equaled since then. It was like sitting on a living room couch. 400+ miles, one day, no problem. 600? Still not a problem. But these 2020s try to make up for with all the electronics. A/C or heat your choice automatic or manual. Yes nice traveling with 460 air was also quiet. Oh and buffeting. Actually was not a problem even with a econo car. Made many cross country trips in those days. Much better than grabbing a seat in a flying bus. Also had room for all the old lady's luggage. Did not need massaging, the living room couch remember? But might need it after emptying the 3 body sized trunk. Speaking of trunk room. Room for a 9" .44 under the armrest of the '66 New Yorker. But the nine inch would not fit inside the console. Had to use something with a shorter barrel. 400 miles = one tank of $0.35 cent premium gas. But it also was a 30 gallon tank that could be fed from either side. Oh and the Riviera I had. That got 22 MPG on the highway and had cruise control. Those buckets were like easy chairs. It was a pleasure after shifting 10 or 13 speed transmissions all day.

The best part of the Lucid Air is the engineering and development work that can’t be seen under the skin. The super efficient drivetrain and unique battery pack are two examples. Assembling BIW (Body In White) uses rivets and structural adhesives similar to the aircraft industry. The amazing part? The BIW only uses traditional welding in two spots! I believe this contributes to the overall solidity of the structure that was mentioned during the test drive

This car's interior is really well thought out. It's not just trying to be futuristic, but practical as well. Everything from the usability of the screens to, addition of those buttons shows that they've put a lot of thought into this. Something even major car manufacturers sometimes forget. Really good job. P.s: Addition of buttons aren't to help transition, it's because traditional buttons are easy to use. The designers themselves explained this in a video.

What? Do you not look at climate controls while adjusting them? All important functions should be on the steering column and wheel and climate is not one of them. If you are going to look at controls while setting them, might as well go with a screen and attract younger buyers who are already used to phones. And touchscreen steering wheels wouldn't matter since phone users already have muscle memory.

I feel like the main reason why they kept things like the climate controls dedicated to buttons was because those things need to be changed very quickly without obstructing other things for very long. Especially given the lag of the screens (not surprising with three huge hi-res screens), flipping up the climate-control screen could be a difference of one or two seconds, which is a lot.
