The Car Died On Us - Citroen C3 "Review"

PLEASE READ: following concluding this video we realised the car featured is an ordinary 2017 Citroen C3, not the Aircross. Apologies for that error, we realise that's quite important to get right especially when talking about a car that doesn't quite tick the proverbial boxes and we promise to not make a habit of it.
The Citroen C3 is a hateful machine, today's video cements that. Obviously, this attempt at reviewing the car became stunted so we had to pivot and have a laugh, please enjoy!

❗❗*** IT'S NOT AN AIRCROSS! *** ❗❗ This was a bit of an impromptu video! I took this C3 to review the night before, and I'd typically do some research prior to my actual review, unfortunately I'm not a walking encyclopedia, though I sometimes claim to be. Alternatively : ** Upon further research, it appears that this is a bog standard Citroen C3, it appears that under the influence of rage and disappointment, I made a mistake. Sorry! **

My employer's C3 broke down due to a broken oil pump. It did use quite a bit of oil but we kept an eye on it and on the correct level. Then, without warning, the oil pump crapped out and almost immediately after the engine. No warning lights, nothing. The engine's insides just did a unscheduled disassembly in an instant.

Not just this PSA Puretec engine, but also Ford's 'Ecoboom' (Ecoboost) - the same main problem being the wet belt design whereby the cambelt is inside the engine and constantly being washed by oil, which degrades the belt and then debris collects in the oil pick-up filter in the sump, until the engine is starved of oil. Apparently it can be ameliorated by ensuring that the sump is removed and the filter cleaned out at every oil change, but I'm betting that this is not common practice. I would like to recommend getting a diesel instead, but PSA's small diesels are also atrocious - I have the 95PS 1.6 in my 2014 Fiesta and it's utterly primitive compared to the (106PS 1.5) engine in my previous steed, a 2007 Renault Clio, being both weaker in day-to-day running and thirstier on a long drive. Ford also scores nil points in my book for terrible ergonomics (poor seating position - seat cushion too low and too hard, no underthigh support and no clutch foot rest, altogether a real pain on a long journey). I grew up with French cars and never appreciated their natural comfort until I bought a non-French one. For the record, I used to work for a Toyota-affiliated company and their talent back in the '00s was for building cars that were JUST good enough - JUST good enough to look/feel OK and stay screwed-together, but not an iota of excessive engineering - probably a legacy of the Japanese kaizen philosophy (continuous improvement, aka continuously cheapening until just before the point of being no good) - so good luck with the Yaris! I remember driving a three-year-old Avensis pool car many years ago and half of the instrument lights had already failed ("no constable, I wasn't aware that I was doing over 60mph because I couldn't see the rest of the speedometer." was a line I had rehearsed as soon as I got on the road..).

That's a really insightful comment, thanks for posting, I've always thought of PSA diesels as being pretty good, the HDi's of old have a great reputation and the XUD's are some of the most rugged engines ever produced - ultimately power isn't the be all and end all but it really does make you wonder exactly what PSA bring to the table anymore? Lethargic diesels and objectively flawed 1.2's they're shoving in everything. I've a fiesta 1.0 'ecoboom' to review at some point soon, which I will not be giving a positive review on, I can assure you. my main gripe with Ford interiors are that their dashboard takes up so much space its unbelievable, and for absolutely no reason, too. They're not particularly good looking things so it's hardly style over substance. I've always found their seats too far too hard also, both in the fiesta and my mum's old C max (which was a decent car, but my god the seat was torture) Interesting that your experience with Toyota products is the opposite of their stereotype, I've found that's often true with many brands, they build up a reputation, then let quality slip and ride on that historical legacy. Luckily, the Yaris has been solid, though I've only had it just over a week or so, so time will certainly tell. I suppose the quality of Toyota steel is one measure, its a bit pitiful. Strangely enough that's why I never actually recommended the Yaris prior to me purchasing one. What's the point of buying a mechanically reliable vehicle when the body rots out on you?

my mother had a citroen picasso for 20 years, I hated its clunkyness but it only broke down once from a short on a trailer it was towing, stunned that citroens somehow got worse

Was it an old *diesel* Picasso at all? Old citroen HDi engines just keep chugging along, invincible things.

we had a diesel at first but if died after a few months, we got a petrol as a replacement and it just wouldn't die, was pretty good across muddy fields too, even towed a stuck car out with it

The oil also consumes the cambelt the bits of dissolving cambelt then travel around the oil ways breaking the engine properly. Stelliantis garbage has also infested many other models of car

You are towing wrong. The front car uses only the accelerator, never touching the brakes. Only the rear car brakes for both of them, this way the chain/rope is always in tention and the car never jerks. It is a little hard at first, but once you get a hang of it it is smooth.

The taller aircross seems ok. Genuinely surprised how much power that little engine kicks out. I suppose that's why they are prone to break under all that load. given Citroen of old they are quite meh or bland which is a shame.
@CaiKeys

It's very impressive when it works, mad how much power it puts out. turbo 3 cylinders have a bit of a mixed reputation, but the puretech 1.2 is renowned for wet belt failure and mad oil consumption issues, to the degree where I'm not sure that Stellantis should even have sold the things for as long as they have

My mum has a c3 aircross 22 plate (granted its only ever done 20k) but thats never had any issues. My brother on the other hand, he was bought a 18 plate C3 1.0 and from what ive heard its been nothing but trouble, had thousands of pounds worth spent on it and is slow as anything. Is also tiny inside and has a awful screen
@CaiKeys
@CaiKeys 4 месяца назад
Is it the 1.2 she has? If you keep up on servicing they *can* be alright, the one in the video was always serviced as and when needed yet still has oil consumption issues, which is apparently an all too common problem. What I noticed about the screen is how unresponsive it was, loading screens hanged for minutes, and the fact you couldn't change temp via dials and had to use the screen was really frustrating

@@CaiKeys The 22 c3 aircross interior is actually really nice, it has a big screen and carplay is very smooth. But yes changing climate control on the screen is so annoying.

Do not buy this car. We had this car as a company car and it needed engine replacement due to spun crankshaft bearings at 60000km. Now 20000km and a new engine later the car is in the shop again due to fuel system problems and we haven't seen or heard from it in 3 months
@CaiKeys
@CaiKeys 4 месяца назад
Absolutely, what's the point of buying one of these (because they're not particularly cheap on the used market) when more reliable alternatives exist? They're decent enough inside and when the engine works its impressive for a 1.2, but that doesn't matter when they often seem to have terrible reliability issues? A new engine at 60,000 KM, the one in the video is consuming lots of oil at 80,000 miles. Not on! Thanks for the comment

Old citroens are terrific vehicles, they always broke the mould and the old XUD's are some of the most reliable engines ever made. Unfortunately it now seems as though they're just homogenised PSA vehicles if the C3 is anything to go by

Soon as we receive a diagnosis I'll be sure to let you know! this particular car has always been serviced and maintained by the book, yet has still suffered from oil consumption and wet belt issues unfortunately, even though its only on ~80,000 miles, how's your's been for reliability?

@@danieltaylor3755 that's great to hear, when this particular car *was* working properly (before we took it to get some shots), it was quite pleasant to drive, too, but unfortunately the one in the vid has been a rather unreliable car for the owner - Common consensus on these 1.2's is stick rigorously to those oil changes, and make sure the wet belt is replaced on schedule, hopefully yours will remain reliable for years to come

Absolutely, could have been far worse! When it's working as intended, the power it puts out is impressive, that's about all I can say that's positive about the thing. I've known this particular car for a few years and it's been so, so problematic. Serviced on the dot, wet belt changed when required, and it burns oil at 80,000 miles. Not on!
