Or I mean. you can rebuild it yourself sense the 46/7/8rh/e are a really simple design. while fixing all its problems all for only 800 or so bucks. the only "special" tool you need is a small press to compress the 850 pound overdrive spring.

I have a 99 Ram 2500 with the V8 Magnum and my uncle bought it new in 1999. It went through three transmissions in 50,000 miles and then when the third one went out he put a Jasper in it and that Jasper has lasted 210K.

Got a 1990 ram that the only reason it got a "new" trans was whoever rebuilt it messed something up so it would jump into neutral and it blew out the clutches, a bad trans builder will kill it every time, also any dodge mechanic will tell you that you really should add a secondary trans cooler, they fixed the frying issue in the 3rd generation by adding that cooler

I love how once this mid 2000's hit every truck manufacturer went to crap. I really wonder if it was something to do with the recession in 07 when they all took massive bailout money. I have an 04 ram 1500 with the 4.7l. I found out from experience why the head gaskets keep going bad. These engines require a special antifreeze from dodge. It's not the universal antifreeze. Universal will eat the head gaskets because of how the coolant passages are. I've been through 2 before I figured it out through ram forums. Now I have had the correct fluid in a long time and no issues. Yes a bit more expensive, but like you say so often. Buy the right stuff the first time. It's the same with the power steering on these. Normal power steering fluid eats out the rack and pinion seals. Dodge actually recommends ATF+4 in the service manual that nobody wants to read. So I killed a power steering rack because of my lazy mistake. It's good to read the owners manuals on every vehicle you own before replacing or topping of fluids. Especially with dodge. I love my dodge and if I didn't fix it myself every time, you are right. They would not be worth it financially. So read the owners manuals and owner's would have less issues and reliable vehicles no matter the make or model I'm sure.

Hmm, never knew about the coolant part. I have a 2002 Durango with the 4.7L. It's treated me well so far especially considering it had green coolant when I bought it and I never changed to the Dodge stuff. The engine and transmission seem pretty solid at 130k.

Yes. This so called mechanic is clueless. I have had 44.7ss with 200k to 350k miles and zero issues. Even the transmissions have been rock solid. My current well used 2004 4x4 has over 200k miles and runs like butter. His constant nut slurping of Toyota is annoying as well. I just got rid of my 11 Camry that was a basket case. Sucker was totaled just because of suspension damage. Also found out there were 12 recalls on it Toyota never informed me of, one of which is a problem known to cause exactly what caused the accident. I also didn’t car for the inside A pillars, that covered airbags, coming off every time it got warm and they covered freaking airbags. Was burning oil like craz, dash was lit up like a Christmas tree, and the trans was slipping. I will NEVER buy another Toyota. I am completely fine with the 04 Dakota and 02 Avalanche Z71 I have now.

@@andrewtorrisi345 I feel that. I have a 2011 RAM 1500 with the 4.7 that suffered a cam failure last weekend. Same cam and lifter issues as the 5.7. The main issue is that the lifters are splash oiled from underneath, and that the oil ports are too small. Not getting enough oil (or the right oil - MOPAR say my engine should run on 0w20, but every mechanic I know that fixes hemis says 5w40 is the way to go) causes the roller on the lifter to seize and then it eats the cam lobe clean off. For reference, my truck has just over 100k miles, was only ever dealer serviced and maintained all service schedules and updates, was never abused, has approx 70% unloaded highway miles, and only towed occasionally (and nothing over 2000lbs). Then fuel injection was more complicated than the carbs, and before that you had electronic feedback carbs that were a nightmare. The 300 straight six was an amazingly reliable engine. Also the Dodge 318 is a tank. And I know the Ford 5.4 triton can go a long time, but I don't care what anyone says, I'll never ever own one. Now, my local Napa had an f150 with the 4.6 they used as a delivery truck. It had 415k miles (I saw the odometer myself, our shop did all the maintenance on the truck) when they sold it to a former employee who promptly drove it 2,300 miles to California without a problem. Stupid thing is still driving around over there somewhere. It was an automatic too. Original drivetrain if you can believe that!

The only thing I can add about the 5.4 3 valve motors is to only use 5w20 full synthetic oil and change it every 5k and your odds of it running great for longer increases by over 50%. Daytime running lights not turning on are a really common issue. The two GM trucks my family have is an 02 Tahoe and a 99 silverado and they have their headlights on 24/7 because the ambient light sensor has gone out. Its a really easy fix the part is only $12 but I don't think most people know its that little black ball on your dashboard that's making these DRLs not work and most people don't want to take their radio out or take apart the entire dash. I've only fixed that issue with my silverado but the Tahoe I plan to leave it like that

Since it was my dads pride and joy , i'm doing a tribute build on it for my dad. It's getting a nice cam , ported heads and probably a single turbo. Probably a 4L80 too.

I became a fan when AFM aka CMC came out of your mouth! As Corvette C7 owner the first thing I did is buy a chip to delete the 4 cylinder option out of my car! I’ve heard nightmare stories about that feature how it eats up the engine and trans! Thank you 🙏🏻

Don't let it idle for too long because that was the big problem with those engines . At idle speed the cam would not sling oil all the way over to the lifters which will cause the lifters to eat up the cam .

Take it from a nissan mechanic the first gen titan are very reliable and will go 200,000 plus mile easily if properly maintained, that goes for all 2003-2015 titans and 2004-2015 armadas. The motor and transmission are pretty much bulletproof and they are not riddled with electrical issues.

I had a regular cab chevy Colorado 2wd 2.8 4cyl 5 speed and i loved it but i had to upgrade since i have a kiddo on the way. Was a good truck for me though the frame was solid, body was shot, clutch slipped and it drank oil but it never left me stranded haha

My 2002 f250 5.4l just hit 342K miles... No issues at all but normal factory recommended maintenance including timing chain replacements and transmission service... Runs as good as day 1 👊

My brother-in-law had a '98 Ram with the Magnum V8 and lemme say, you couldn’t kill that engine even if you tried. It still ran even after it was sideswiped by a garbage truck. That’s when my brother-in-law junked it, but he still misses it.

Always been a chevy guy but ill tell you I towed a travel trailer with the owners 07 f150 5.4 triton. The chassis, steering build quality and interior on that truck was as good as any truck I've been in.the trick. Is to put that sweet ls engine in that truck and you have Perfection!

I bought a 2018 Nissan Titan XD. It's the most underrated truck on the market. The only complaint I have is the small fuel tank.

Buying a 1999 Ford F-150 today with 235k miles on the 5.4l Triton, smoothest sounding V8 I've ever heard, I normally wouldnt buy 200k+ mileage vehicles, but after hearing this thing; I'd be stupid not too. Wish me luck.

I had a 2003 ram with 5.7 hemi with 5 speed 545 Rfe transmission and 3.92 rear end. Excellent truck. Had 272,000 miles on it and pulled strong. Towed and worked it. Excellent transmission also. Real easy to work on also. Got 9.6 mpg but hey😂

You are the first person i've ever heard say stay away from the dodge 4.7. My mothers 03 Dakota has 180,000 miles. Replaced Alt., water pump, thermostat, battery, spark plugs, radiator, one leaf spring shackle (other needs done) and 3 heater fan speed resistors. Never an engine problem. Knock on wood.

I had a brand new 2004 Ram 1500 with a 4.7 V8, the engine is the only component in the drivetrain that didn't need warranty work within the 1st year. Manual 5-speed and rear axle were replaced under warranty. Apart from a water pump, engine was trouble free for the 10 years I owned it, although it got horrendous gas mileage.

thanks for your video part on "what trucks to buy and what not to buy". The Ford 2004 to 2010 5.4 v8. Ram truck (they are NOT called Dodge trucks any more since 2009) with 4.7 v8. This was good help to my nephew who is looking to buy.

Love that the first series in the to keep category fits my 2004 Silverado. 150k miles on it and it keeps chugging along with only minor issues. The wife keeps trying to get me to buy a newer truck but you’ve given me even more reason to hang onto it, besides I like my current 0$ payment. Maybe I’ll even repaint it so it looks purdy. 😜
