i got a buddy whos sister did this with a skunk.. it was a young one who apparently got separated from mom somehow, not nursing but, not really ready to be alone, mom freaked out seeing a skunk, dad told her to take it to the barn and put it in the ferret stall, it didnt spray anybody, infact... it became so human and human-pet friendly they didnt have to have it deglaned... the vet helped her get a permit to keep it as a pet testifying it was too young to survive alone, it should have spent another year learning from mom or something... since we didnt find any bodies in the area around, we figure perhaps something chased them and one got lost.. when it saw his sister, it came running to her...she fed it part of her sandwitch, realized it was skunk but that it was also really friendly..she thought it might be somebodies pet with how friendly it was being... (it crawled up in her lap as she sat on the log and curled up in a ball...) that thing loved me, and was a great guard-skunk... they had some signs made up "property secured by polecat security" a few people learned the hard way, that wasnt a joke... one was trying to steel eggs or chickens from the coop, the skunk went out the dog/cat flap making quite alot of noise causing my buddies mom to get up and look outside in time to see their skunk run over, and spray both of them then... his at them as they exited the area... she called the cops and... well the local ER had 2 guys who had been sprayed less then an hour later... both couldnt stop vomiting from the stench.. LOL..

Those lightning strikes aren't just weirdly powerful. They somehow have a positive charge in the clouds, which usually is impossible. The fact that they struck a barrier made of electrons means that somehow the clouds had an inverse charge, which is hyper-weird.

Well written and fun, good use of body motion, such as describing Fubsy's antics and depicting zeno reactions. The Pov characterwas great and the unique persective of making them a humanity enthusiast was a really good touch that was well implemented. I really like how most of her information come from the one book, and putting quotes from the book before each chapter was a fun way to show off the little cultural misunderstandings that make the setting feel more real. Also, author knew when to give info and when to withold it. I definitely want to know what happened with the Glim. Damn good story.

It's interesting how human sweating pops up all over stories like this as the one explanation for our endurance. As far as I am aware we actually share the trait of primarily cooling down via breathing with other animals, but the full body motions made when galloping impede quadrupeds' ability to breath deeply enough to efficiently use this mechanism while fleeing at full speed. I don't know what would happen if a prey animal didn't panick and trotted away instead of galloping.
@theapexsurvivor9538
@theapexsurvivor9538 8 месяцев назад
We use breathing for rapid thermoregulation of our inner core and circulatory system, but sweating is our primary method of sustained cooling. Basically, breathing is great for venting a lot of heat in a short time, but requires a degree hyperventilation and lower ambient temperatures to work well, while sweating is good if you want to lose a fairly consistent amount of heat over a long time and don't want to screw up the oxygen-carbon balance in your blood and muscles. It's also mostly passive, requiring very little energy compared to panting, making it harder to starve yourself with it (though you still do need oils, water, etc). Combined with having the shortest hair of any heavily perspiring animals (followed by horses and then apes), allowing us a high evaporation surface without much water or heat retention, we're really fucking good at maintaining a steady pace for ages and ages without much rest or food, just needing water. It also helps that running increases the efficiency of sweating but forces specific breathing patterns, making it so that when running a reliance on breath cooling is way less efficient than sweating even for rapid cooling (gets even worse in really hot dry environments where it dries out your lungs and might even warm them up, while sweating just requires more water to maintain). TL;DR we use breathing to reduce temperature in bursts, but sweating for constant, passive reduction in temperature that is more compatible with aerobic exercises like marathons.

I had to laugh when "whistling in the graveyard" was called pointless. It shows whoever researched it was incompetent. For anyone interested it has 2-3 uses in wilderness survival. 1st is to alert easily scared prey or evasive predators (ones not looking to eat you). 2nd use is to catch other humans attention so we could track individuals in a group without direct line of sight. 3rd is to aid in moderating anxiety for whatever is about to happen (some people have very high tolerances for stress so sometimes this is irrelevant) Those are the 3 basic ones that I know just from hiking. There is a fair likelihood that there are more reasons for advertising your location but I don't immediately recall them.

Hey Guys. I was on a diffferent channel recently, listening to a few of their stories and I ended up sending a rather full on set of criticisms regarding the pacing, emotional colour, and general "listenability" of their product. I did mention one story in particular, that I could not remember at the time, which was a fantastic example of the art of engaging storytelling. THIS STORY!! Still love it. Still laugh to it. Well done. 5 ⭐!❤

I loved the content and am now a subscriber but can I make a weird request? I just realized I was burning my high-speed data at 1080p for a story with no pictures for 2 hours and when I realized my mistake, I found out that it only goes down to 360p. I like to run my stories at 144p because I listen to them with one ear bud at work and don't watch the screen.

REALLY wish this was still 2003 when i could simply download an MP3 version @ 96kps Lame-encode of an audio book. which burns less than 0.7MiB per Minuet and sounds WONDERFUL. hell even a 64kps was better than '240p' if ya fiddled with ur encoder settings. *sigh*

Is it funny when a lot of stories are now starting to sound like the narrator? Your really good at telling a story, and emphasizing the right things. It's a shame about the nature of predators one. I thought that was really well done by you. Still good for the author too.

I really like that the humans aren't infallible compared to the aliens. Nerif flat out calls Zoe on her bad idea to go out hunting in the dark, because it really WAS a bad idea, showing that while aliens depend on humans to be resourceful, they're neither idiots nor without agency.

For some reason I couldn't find it, unless it doesn't exist: Does this story describe the "Glint" incidents later in the series or am I skipping something I should have read/listened to before this? .... I ask this, though I'm only 2hrs into the narration.
@rayanderson5797

The story never specifically states what happened, but the follow-up story "All About the Limniads" hints at it a little more. It was definitely a bit more than just an inter-species mis-communication.

Love the idea that it’s well known that one does not deny a human a pet. When we do not get pets, we go ape shit. As a human I can confirm if I do not get a cat, I go nuts.
@HumanisticJones

Your human will be doing nothing but dejectedly worrying about the abandoned “kitten” or “pupper” while also breaking packbond with the authority that denied that pet. It’s the quickest way to completely “fuck things up” for the whole team.
