Thomas played for a couple of years in Finland. He first played for HIFK for like 2 seasons and was decent. Then a couple of seasons later he played great for Kärpät and again a couple of seasons later he played for Jokerit in the lockout season. One of the better foreign goalies that played in Finland that I know of
@Ipavaiva

He also won championship with Hifk in 1998. That team was absolutely stacked tho, but still. His back-up that season was a kid called Niklas Bäckström
@robins5798
@robins5798 5 лет назад
He also played for my favorite team in Sweden, AIK, in 2000-2001. Probably the best player on the team that season and got them into the playoffs. Ironically Niklas Bäckström was the one who replaced him in net the year after (and AIK got relegated from the swedish elite league).

Tim Thomas was clearly the beast goalie in Liiga during the lockout. Bäckström (Kärpät), Vokoun (HIFK) and Roloson (Lukko) played great too. Noronen (HPK) wasn't bad either. Raycroft lost starter job to Mika Lehto in Tappara. Nurminen (Pelicans) played well but his season (and career) ended early to bad injury. Toskala (Ilves) was 7th lockout goalie in the Liiga. But he only played 3 games.

Hated Thomas for what he did to the Canucks in 2011 but I have to give credit where it's due. He did a number on the Canucks and had a stellar run. Wish his slide had started a year earlier then maybe the Canucks would have their Cup. Anyways, a great goalie who made the most of his shot at the title and carried that team to the Promised Land. Lot of goalies can learn from that...it's never too late. Thanks for posting!

Since you've done a video on Tim Thomas, you should do one on Joe Murphy. That's also another weird story; so much so that there's currently several NHL players who want to try to reach out to him ( Joe Murphy ) and help him. He was the 1st round draft pick of Detroit in 1986, won a Stanley Cup with the Oilers, got hit solidly and suffered a concussion and now he's homeless in Kenora, Ontario at the age of 50....Very sad...

This is a good video. Solid balanced account of his career. No click bait garbage. I threw it on one of my playlists for a rainy day, half watched it once in awhile, I get busy and never quite hear at all. I heard it all today - you really put his career together very well. I remember Tim! And I remember Jerry Cheevers! I had a feeling we weren't going to get to the Stanley Cup finals with hugging goalies! Our Cup winning goalies didn't exactly hug unless they were tackling another player! LoL! I'm old - member of the Bobby Orr fan club. Every female in Boston fell in love with him - my older sisters 🙄 (Bobby Orr & Mark Spitz lol!) As I get to know your videos I realize you seriously know your stuff. It's not just blah blah blah - I actually pause and back up your videos to listen again cuz I realize I missed something interesting Anybody can look at stats - but you know how to read em & look between the lines. You've been watching hockey a while. And you know what you're looking at. I relate to your history of hockey more than any place else. The pundit kids are Hot shots, but you know where this game came from. You remember it before George Parros came along! I don't go around telling yoo tubers are great they are - this is hockey! don't have a lot of subscriptions, all that traffic coming in & avoid the media knowing my business. But it serves you them knowing my business, so I'll subscribe. I don't join internet clubs or do monthly stuff, but if you've got a t-shirt to sell- I'd be happy to buy one and gift them at Christmas if I can support you that way. I need long sleeve ones bucking up firewood. We got the Sway-man out here in the 49th, but Alaska needs more hockey! Apparently I'm supposed to follow the kraken now? I may have changed coasts, but my black & gold colors don't run! Just want to say thanks - I really enjoyed this video

Good series! Here's hoping for a video of two of my all time favorites John Vanbiesbrouck and Tom Barrasso. Being Finnish and after watching Tim Thomas during his pretty successful seasons in Helsinki and Oulu, it was just that more interesting to follow his eventual success in the NHL (actually much like Brian Rafalski some years earlier). It would've been nice to hear your thoughts about Tim's goaltending style, because I for one couldn't find comparables or put him in any traditional box of goalie styles. He seemed to be one of those "that can't work but somehow it does"-types.

From the moment I first saw Thomas in a Bruins uniform I knew he was something special. It took a few years for him to develop at the NHL level but, from the beginning you could see the amount of fight in him to keep the puck out of the net. I could never understand why no one else had faith in him (Until the 2011 playoffs really) bringing in a guy like Manny God damn Fernandez to be their "starter".

Growing up, Thomas was the guy I looked up to when I was beginning to develop a specific playing style as a goalie. And when I watched him, I truly loved his style because of how well it worked. Eventually, it worked for me as well, as I went on to win championships and awards all over the U.S. But I also always questioned his actions off the ice, specifically after the 2011 Stanley Cup run. Overall, he's the greatest goaltender I've ever watched to this day, and I will never forget his name, regardless of who he was off the ice, as my childhood hero.

Honest B's fans know that no Tim Thomas in 2011, no Cup. At the beginning of that season his mask went from black and gold to a neutral white and black as he expected to be dealt, primarily b/c of the emergence of Rask. But, a new and improved Timmah (hip surgery) beat out Tuukka for the job. What made Thomas great was his determination to prove people wrong, and his unorthodox style, the "battlefly", all but assured he was consistently doubted throughout his entire career. In an era of carbon copy tall, lanky butterfly goalies, he defied the odds through his play. We'll never know what Thomas could have been had someone taken a chance on him earlier in his career. He could of ended ranked among the all-time greats like Roy, Hasek, etc. However, instead, sadly for him and hockey fans, we were only permitted a sliver of his greatness. Including the greatest post season performance by a goalie going back to Roy in 86. Not too shabby for a guy scouts considered too unorthodox for the NHL in his prime years. Timmy made them all eat a big shit sandwich in the end. Thanks, Timmah.

Shan, his first game was vs the Edmonton Oilers I believe and he shut them out too. Always thought that was a bitty funny.

I remember when Sean Avery hit the back of his head with his stick after the whistle and Thomas hauled ass and got him back. As a 12 year old kid, I thought that was quite funny. What a strange career.

He was strange and became a late bloomer similar to Dominik Hasek but had a shorter time as a great. Strange how he retired and unretired like he did. One thing that could of been mentioned in the video is he was traded to the New York Islanders but never played so the Boston Bruins unloaded his contract and the New York Islanders got to the salary cap floor. That trade was a trendsetter on unloading contracts to budget teams to take on the cap hit.

Cheering for the 'Nucks in 2011 I definitely remember disliking Timmy T. in the Finals. Him and Ryan Miller always seemed to shut the door on the 'Nucks. If Thomas wanted out, he should have just retired though yea? Boston already proved that they could win with this new kid Rask.

Hot take: Tim Thomas is the only difference between the Bruins and Maple Leafs.

Tim Thomas, aka the Tasmanian devil, was the difference between ANY team and the Bruins during that era! Everyone thinks our current team stinks and will never get to the playoffs - well technically the 2011 team wasn't that great.. except for that one guy. During that one season, in that one place and during that one moment in time! Really wasn't a matter of whether the Bruins were going to win, Tim Thomas was not letting them lose! As nice as he is? if you go back to see Linus Ullmark's early highlights? I saw a little bit of Tim Thomas coming out of him when he was young, Sabres fans turned me on to it when he was traded, some of them were NOT happy cuz they said he was just about to break out and hit his stride.. - I'd like to see him get a great big chip on his shoulder and stop hugging people!

You forgot to mention that TT had a bad hip in 09-10. That was part of his mediocre season. You also forgot to mention the records he broke & set as a Bruin & the league. You also didn't address that isn't wasn't so much of TT not going to the White House. Everyone on the team knew he wasn't going. What got the Bruins fans angry the most was the fact that by him sitting out, the Bruins still took the cap hit, because TT was over 35. That's what pissed me off & where I thought he was extremely selfish. That's what tarnished his legacy. I agree with you about the HOF. If Chris Osgood can't get in, then TT shouldn't even be considered.

I think he was good its just sad he took that year off because that was the beginning of the end.I like MIKE Vernon and Billy Radford better but Tim Thomas was one of the best for Boston.

I think what we're not saying is that he was head injured... he had to take that year off. And then he never fully recovered to continue playing. If you look for more recent interviews he'll tell you himself what went on. Lot of hockey players can thank him for bringing attention to the concussion issue.

@TheFoolintherainn 3 года назад
@@gavinknight8571 I didn't know either until I tripped across it.. and I didn't realize that it wasn't common knowledge until this past year. now we know the NHL was trying to keep him quiet. They've been trying to keep a leash on Tim Thomas for a long time! I have to confess, I'd probably be considered an ole fart haha! I remember seeing an interview on Gerry cheevers years after his career - telling us how he beat his wife, went thru hell, finally went to counseling and got his life together.. he had massive Head injuries ( remember he didn't wear a helmet back in his day.) And then somehow I caught it trickling out about Tim Thomas, and then I looked into it. It did not make headlines. It's funny of all the sports - how football came into the spotlight on that one, but no other sport brought it to the forefront ... it makes sense the way they line up helmet to helmet in American football. Yet they knew to put helmets on hockey players by the '80s..? So obviously they knew something was going on. I've watched hockey equipment go from nothing to high technology protective wear in a matter of 40-50 years. I suited up a goalie for years - we went through the 12 to 11 1/2 pad change, new throat guard standards every year for a decade. I remember well cuz it was expensive! But you went along with it cuz you wanted to protect your kid.. especially a goalie! So if they were upping their requirements every year or two on the standards of protective equipment - obviously they knew something! I don't blame you for not knowing.. I think they were trying to keep it under wraps. And you didn't hear about it until years after the 2011 Stanley Cup win. Tim Thomas was old news, no coach wanted to deal with him. But especially, the NHL did not want his lawsuit like the NFL went through Remember - sports now serves lawyer's liars leeches - not the athletes nor the fans. We exist so lawyers can make money, airlines can sell tickets and hotels can make profit. 🙄 So Tim's story just sort of faded off into the media horizon. Swept under the rug by a bunch of NHL lawyers. All you have to do is look at the evolution of hockey equipment, and you know darn well they knew all along! I'm hoping Rask is just about as crazy as a head injured guy... Because obviously that's what takes us to Stanley Cup wins! Enjoy the playoffs!

12-13 wasn't really a "year off" it was a half season / lockout season. If I remember correctly, he was not happy with the lockout and vocal about what a joke it was, and that was a big factor in him not coming back.
