Oh yea! She's spot on! She looks and even SOUNDS like Bea Arthur! And Korman's voice doing Walter is pretty good too! That mix of New York metro and Jewish!
@@ROBYNMARKOW Did you really? Wow that must have been nice at the time! Thanks for the interesting bit of trivia! Actually, Bill Macy was both as well!
She wasn’t a maid on her own show, “The Jefferson’s”. Isabel Sanford (“Louise Jefferson”) was impersonating Esther Rolle who was the actress who played the Florida Evans the maid in the “All in the Family” episode and eventually in the spin-off “Good Times”. Confusing, huh?
they probably loved it. Maude was as much of a send up as Archie Bunker, just on the other side of the coin. Her instincts may be right for the most part, but she's over the top in terms of white guilt and over compensating for it.
Yes, indeed. I actually watched the part of the original Maude episode of meeting the maid the other day. And it's great. Carol Burnett is a wonderful comedian.
+ David Lightfoot......... yes me too & "The Carol Burnett Show" aired from: 1967 -1978 did you know that? & i "NEVER" new what a "PARODY" is anyway do you?
Chicago's voters did the same thing with Lori Lightfoot and Brandon Johnson! We gotta fall to our knees and worship the Black politicians! Same with Obama. This is why I hate White liberals. Even back in the 70's when the Carol Burnett Show was going strong, even back then White liberals had a reputation for being a big bunch of ass kissing, brown nosing phonies who always pretended to champion the causes of other groups and other people, but never able to champion their own causes or protect their own communities. It's really sad. Yesterday's comedy has become today's nightmare.
She kept a straight face through the majority of the skit, though there was one point where I thought she was gonna lose it. When Broad sat her down on the couch and she sat at her feet. Isabel had the briefest hint of a smile but reigned it in before it got to be a laugh.
I remember my mom and I laughing tears watching this back then! ...and here comes Broad, LOL! Those we're the good ol days, miss my mom terribly wish she was still here!
Yes! I remember when this was new - there was another parody of "Broad" that Carol did, where they spoofed the entire opening theme song and montage with HILARIOUS results! Would love to see that again...
I was a kid when the Maude show was on TV, and I found the woman character horrible. She was mean, and she thought she knew everything. As an adult, I know that Hollywood was trying to show women were as powerful as men if they were mean, rude, and hated men. This was their idea of the opposite of submissive and progressive. It makes me sick to watch people in my town behave like this character in the parody, putting on social media a lineup of icon images to get people to like them from about 10 demographic and minority groups (black fist, rainbow flag, ILY handshape, etc.) Then they meet someone from a minority group that is oppressed and calls them out for something they said that is bigoted or ignorant and that same heroic savior begins destroying that person staring with pointing out their resume of how many other groups they have supported and good deeds done.
@@ScoobyandShaggy5554 We started watching All in the Family and Maude in the last few months and enjoyed 'em both. But when I was a kid, I saw All in the Family and was just like "Who'd wanna watch that, with that kinda guy in it?" and stuff. I think people just did the same kinda thing with both shows, forgetting that the main character is criticized and critiqued in both of them in different ways.
These days comedians are afraid to offend anybody. If they do, that's it! Their career is over! But back then if a comedian didn't offend somebody, then the comedian wasn't doing his or her job! These days people are so sensitive. Always looking for an excuse to punch or sue another person. Crazy times. Bad, bad times. I hope we survive this, but sometimes I wonder.
She must have taken a couple minutes to study up on Bea Arthur cuz she really nailed it ! WHAT GREAT WRITERS THEY HAD on this show. I miss quality variety/comedy shows like this
+1talldaddy I loved Isabel Sanford. Lil' trivia: when Norman Lear spun off The Jeffersons from All In The Family, Isabel actually didn't want to star in the show. She wanted to stay next door to the Bunkers. She got over that years later as The Jeffersons became it's own big hit across the country. Everybody loved Weezie! ☺️
Isabelle Sanford, playing ester rolled,on a parody of a show, that spun off of all in the family, while they both also spun off of all in the family and we're always compared to each other!! Brilliant!! Oh and the guy who played Lionel on the Jeffersons, co created good times, which is why the younger son is named Michael Evans! Awesome!!
OH, this is a riot! Poking the right kind of fun at the feminist movement. Nobody could do satire like Carol and company. Nothing mean, just the lunacy of some situations in her sketches, you totally got that that was a jab.. and funny as heck.. love BROAD. Carol nails Bea Arthur
This isn't poking at the feminist movement. It's poking at the white Americans who try so hard not to be offensive that they end up being offensive. That was the primary criticism of the hit series 'Maude.'
I watched "The Carol Burnett Show" as a kid and teen during it's 11 year run 1967 - 1978 but don't remember the skits, therefore this is like watching something i never seen before. 👍
This was just done too well. Shows like Maude and All in the Family from Norman Lear will never be made again in this universe, so very sad. The theme songs were so very telling too. I miss the old days and the old ways. Now we have what? I guess every generation bemoans their past, but that is the cycle of life.
There should be a whole separate DVD dedicated to the Burnett show's television and movie spoofs. Most of them were spot on, and very funny. This send-up of "Maude" is great, and----maybe except for a bit more of a Noo Yawk accent than Maude had----Carol does a terrific impersonation of Bea Arthur. It's hard to find talent like this any more.
@@inkyguy I love how all those timeless classics existed within the same universe and interconnected. Decades later, even the Fresh Prince of Bel Air became a part of that very same universe. The elderly Jefferson couple appear in group marriage counseling, needless to say it was not a quiet situation. 😁😂😭 Then later, they buy the Banks' home in the end.
I use to love watching the Carol Burnett show with my late grandmother...my favorite part was the end portion with the mop and bucket, never understood that part but I loved watching it.
My sense was the cleaning lady got called to the stage to act, then was "just the cleaning lady" once the show was over. I couldn't find the story online, so that's nothing more than a guess.
I remember watching this episode when it aired. Awesome parody, but I can't fathom being able to memorize the script. Carol was brutal! Hard to believe that was 43 or 44 years ago..
I was just out of high school. Honestly, Mary Hartman show moved so fast, it was tough to keep up with everything going on. I was just out of high school. Conway passed on in 2019. I stopped trying to keep up with all who left us.
I'm a right leaning conservative but even I loved watching Maude. I really liked Bea Arthur and thought her show with her being a LIBERAL and Walter being a conservative showed that the 2 can coexist and learn to respect and love each other.
mike856ms Bea Arthur is one of my favorites, even if she's a Liberal. We knew she was, but, she didn't make it a point to express her views. Nor did Carroll O'Connor, for that matter. When Bea Arthur appeared as Maude on "All in the Family," they had a great chemistry.
Walter wasn't a conservative they met at the democratic national convention, he just wasn't as liberal as Maude (who was literally a parody inning of itself)
This was another funny sketch. According to various episodes, Louise Jefferson worked as a maid before "movin' on up." No one mentioned Walter being pantless. Both figuratively and literally, Broad wore the pants in this family.
+orangehornet57 Actually, the Jeffersons lived next door to the Bunkers in All in the Family. I believe they owned a drycleaners -- and they spun off into The Jeffersons.
+SueSnellLives! I know. Some episodes of The Jeffersons mentioned her once working as a maid. Apparently she quit to work at the dry cleaners. One time she had to ask a former employer for help with the Youth Center.
One of the best sketches Carol and company ever did! As hilarious as the hilarious show they're lampooning! Loved Ms.Sanford's take on 'Florida'. It's too funny.....'New Jersey', indeed!! 😆
some hooman Isabel Sanford was a talented TV/show business personality, who also played Louise "Weezie" Jefferson, on tbe TV show "The Jeffersons", And tbve maid on the Sydney Poitier movie "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner".
Carol Burnett is so great that she got superstar Isabel Sanford (AKA socialite Louise Jefferson) to play New Jersey the domestic engineer. I love this clip.
God only knows how I ended up here, as I've never seen this show nor the one it's parodying, but I do find it funny how 50 years later the jokes are still relevant.
They all did such a great job in this sketch. But I would have loved to have seen Harvey as "Broad" and Carol as "Walter". Seeing Harvey as Mother Marcus had me imagining the roles reversed in this particular skit.
That would have been interesting! You know what, though... so many people are making such a big deal out of a skit. The IRONY is that, for ALL IN THE FAMILY, Sammy Davis Jr. actually asked to be on the show because he GOT what they were doing. He showed up in an episode of Archie Bunker's place and got kissed by Archie and Stephanie.
+Drchainsaw77 You're right ... "New Jersey" is a witty pun (here, play on state names) in the above Burnett satire that I had seen a while ago and forgotten.
GOD I MISS THIS ,,,,, I CANT WATCH ANYTHING TODAY ITS ALL YUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
