There’s an alternate version of this where instead of fading out, there is a brief Instrumental solo at the end, and the song slows to a stop, and Karen’s voice comes in and she says “figure out where the rest of the melody is, and I’ll sing it..... Bom!” Then the song concludes. It’s this version here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xBtVUSIcAjM.html

i've always loved that "break" when she says LET at the 3:10 minute mark!... simple but oh so good..

Thanks for doing this one. You're right - it could have been a hit. It's the one that got away (one of them, anyway). Richard's arrangement is brilliant here. The trumpet stabs really help to propel the song in the chorus. And Karen's performance is inspired - warm and intimate, with a few carefully placed vocal flourishes (the way she holds "let" just slightly in the repeated chorus near the end, for example). It's a short song, but there's a lot going on here.

For a contrasting performance, try Petula Clark's version on her "Warm and Tender" LP from '71 (her last on the Warner Bros. label): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rpfm50r2FiA.html. It's contemporary with the Carpenters' release. In fact, Petula may have been out the gate with the song before the Carpenters, as her album came out earlier in the year. It seems so much slower, though it clocks in at just a little more than 20 seconds longer. You really miss things like the trumpet stabs and percussion that give the Carpenters' performance a bit more kick. And with Karen's confident reading of the song, well, she (Karen) just owns it.

And for a Carpenters tribute performance, there's Matthew Sweet on the "If I Were a Carpenter" album from '94: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VoQVazFzEY0.html. It's patterned after Richard's arrangement almost to the note. But then again, it's Richard on the electric piano and the background vocals, so the tie to the Carpenters classic is stronger than almost any other selection on the tribute album.

Boy do I appreciate your exploring the whole genre of works by the Carpenters. Karen's vocal range and song diversity make her incomparable to others. And you bring attention to the musical talent that Richard brought to these arrangements. It's great that they have such a large portfolio of music to dig into!

I love this song, but as a songwriter, producer, vocalist, I think it's the weird format they chose .. A little Verse, Chorus, one stanza of Verse, Chorus, a double Verse and then 4 Choruses.. I don't know bout all that!! It's such a great song and mixed so well that I think they blew it in the Format.. They probably should have stuck with a more standard format or at least closer to it to make this a hit.. Too short.. You want more Pay Off on this because of it and it becomes like a promise unfulfilled..

ya now that you mention it the format is weird. I favor formats that are very predictable when it comes to popular music. I'm a lazy person I wanna be lead by very simple songs and just already know what's coming up. I mean a few fakeouts here and there are fine but I don't really like being lost at all.
