This is Karen at her very, very best : the 1st time I saw her in Denver, early summer of '71, & I was just blown away by what I saw & heard. In person, her voice was stronger, smoother, & more expressive, just leaving me speechless. The group was excellent, & though it's clear that Rich is the boss, it's his kid sister who WAS the show. To be fair, Richard was the boss because he really did know and understand what worked for them musically, as well as offering something innovative to the process that set them apart from other acts, and gave them their own stamp. The first thing you notice in this clip, is Richard and his precision with the intro as he plays, sounds exactly like the record, note for note. The band and Karen are following him as he plays keyboard, and conducts like an orchestra leader at the same time. So young both of them, but very disciplined and very professional.
+Alvin4NY what blows me away seeing them live like this is how close to the record the whole band sounds. The hardest thing IMO to coordinate live is an evenly mixed and most importantly, on pitch, or in key, set of vocal harmonies. Their whole band vocal sound live is soooo amazingly good it's nearly unbelievable, but I know it's their real live voices cause Richard was a big perfectionist. The part at the end where they sing "think I'm gonna be sad" has 2 vocal harmony parts that are so close they are only one "tone" apart, similar to singing a B and C together, which is extremely difficult to do, especially live. Also their mixed volume when doing these harmonies is just as amazing. It is so even, Karen's voice just melts into the other lower harmonies so no voice dominates in what you hear. When they sing "he's got a ticket to ride", I think she sings the highest part....
@@DaveRucci yes, yes, yes. This song is a stunning work of art. Absolutely beautiful and "perfection" to the finest degree. And they are singing it "live", not in a studio, but in a live concert setting! Freaking amazing!
@@DaveRucci Out of all their live performances over the years.I think this one is their best. They play the Bacharach medley with a perfect tempo.I actually like their version of 'Ticket to Ride' better then the Beatles.
I wonder how many people realize how cosmic The Carpenters really were as a duo. Forget their talent as instrumentalists for a minute and just listen to those voices. After many years I finally heard this song again...and listening to their beautiful harmony brought me to tears. Karen was a spectacular comet that blazed far too briefly...the likes of which we will never see again.
Absolutely. She's like a goddess to me here, and Richard's arrangement to this song, wow!!! With the harmonies you can really tell that they both studied music theory while at CSULB. I love the wonderful chord progressions and all those minors. So unique, and so beautiful. I love the Beatles, too, but this song done this way is amazing.
What great singers we had back in the day.most of today's singers just don't measure up to yesterday's superstars in any way, shape or form..it is what it is,..I guess.
@@esquibelle I have heard that this version was a better version, Many Times. I also know that when John Lennon met Karen for the first time, he told her, that "she had a Fabulous Voice". Karen, as shy and insecure as she was, had to ask her companion, "do you this he was serious?". Face it. I have met thousands of hard core Rock N Rollers, And when I mention Karen Carpenter, they tell me they have all of her albums, loved her voice and while growing up were, "secretly, seriously in love with her, and her expressionist voice". Bitter Sweet.
thehistorywatcher. It is rather doubtful that Lennon would have said something like that. In any case, The Beatles and the Carpenters versions are "chalk and cheese", The Carpenters, apart from turning it into a ballad ,also altered the lyrics, changing the "dynamic"of the thing . Some trivia, the song title refers to a train ticket- a Ticket To Ryde(the British town).
Same with me. It is such a wonderful performance. It's one of the few complete performances I've been able to find and even though the audio isn't that good it's still an amazing performance.
Richard's musical arrangement with Karen's superb vocal performance brings out a much deeper sophisticated meaning of this Beattles classic. I just hope people understand and appreciate the difficulty and musicianship it takes to sing and play the drums at the same time. R.I.P. Karen Carpenter Thank you for the music!
Love this version. She is the best female singer ever. They can rock as well check it out at 3:40. Wish they carried that for a while with Karen do a drum solo.
Lovely voice cute theme music played by a beatiful woman, unfortunately she died while still young. This video also shows his ability to play the drums, should also be noted that it was always musically backed by the extraordinary musician his brother Mr. Richard Carpenter. Karen i love your music.
My biggest question, is..Why in the world did Richard take Karen off the drums. Soon they figured out how viewer could see her, while drumming..so why take her away from her beloved drums. Every artist Knows, that "Art is all about doing something that no one else has done" Karen was doing just that, one of the first female singers that could play the drums and play them well..Why stop progress? I love all the videos with Karen on the drums, best.
I'm so glad to read someone else saying the exact same thing in the same way I've thought for a long time. I think Karen sang her best while accompanying the drums because as she herself said "they (singing and drumming) both came together". I think the audiences preferred to see her in her element too - the applause is much more intense for the pieces with her drumming/singing.
I remember reading that Rich said that Karen was small and that when she was behind a large drum set nobody could see her so they came to the agreement that when it came time for the ballads she would go out front and sing the songs standing w/ a microphone and she could remain seated behind the drums yet we could see Ringo Starr drummer for The Beatles perfectly fine on that raised platform that he was on so I don't see why they couldn't have done the same for Karen. Sighhhh. What could of been. RIP Karen. RIP baby.
of course everybody always focuses on Karen which is understandable . However Richard and the band are incredible. Vocally they are off the charts and great musicians as well.
@@DaveRucci I love the Jazz flare she gives to Mr. Guder about two-thirds of the way in. I mean the groove just completely shifts into a jazz sound, which was more true to their original sound. And, darn, if she's not ripping it on "Johnny B Goode" later in the show. Wow!
Dear Karen, your mother, your brother and Tom Burris killed you. They killed an angel. I hope they burn in the hell for ever !!! - /// Please, rest in peace my sweet Karen, . . . my love !
I like the solo vocals, but as soon as they get the whole chorus going, I think it falls short. Something sounds trite and too folksy....it needs to be reimagined. This is true of some of the other Carpenter songs....the solo sounds great...then the chorus parts gets too bubbly/trite.
La versión de beatles es la original pero Carpenters le dieron su propio estilo y lograron muchos éxitos con este disco. Karen es la mejor mujer baterista y una de las mejores voces de la historia.
