Saw them in concert in 77 or 78. Richard was behind the piano and Karen was behind the drum set throughout the complete show. Her voice was perfect the entire show.

A reviewer with Rolling Stone magazine once said, "Karen Carpenter's voice is like the sound of a lover whispering in your ear.". I'm 63 years old now, and she STILL gives me goose-bumps when I hear her singing.

This song is more relevant today than ever! I’m 66 years old and lived this era. It does me good to see all you younger reactors listen to all the great music from the past. All kind of memories, like Karen sings about, come back to me. Music from this era will never again be made I’m afraid. You guys are keeping it alive through your reactions! … A tip of my hat to you fine sir!

My older brother bought The Carpenters albums...that's when I caught on to their fabulous music and Karen's vocals and drumming. Of course love Richard's great keyboards. Beautiful 70's music...never can forget this duo 50 years later...thanks for the memories Shawn 🎤🎶👍

Great Carpenters track. If you want to hear Tony Peluso really doing the business on guitar, listen to Goodbye to Love, one of their best IMHO. You can't go wrong with their other stuff though.

Drumming situation.... early studio songs they has Hal Blaine on drums... Karen did plenty too.... when out on tour or on many tv shows it was either Karen or Cubby O Brian..... you didn't notice this one had some pretty harp play.....that was Gayle Levant

I'm 70 and have always lost myself in the music. When it became crude and angry, I stopped following it and went back to my oldies. We had the best music, and just took it for granted.😢

In the early 70s there was a huge vogue for "oldies", and this song was written as a commentary on it. The medley features part of Skeeter Davis' End Of The World, which Karen ends on a baritone note...it's glorious...

I loved this one from the first note I heard all those years ago!😢Hal Blaine on drums was part of The ‘Wrecking Crew’ which Hal nicknamed. They were session musicians who played on some of the biggest selling and best songs of the 1960’s into the early 1970’s.

I agree that these lyrics are for everyone! Ever since I discovered reactors, I get to hear songs that are a reminder of particular times or events in my life. My favorite band is R.E.M., and lead singer Michael Stipe's grandmother told him "Remember Every Moment," for R.E.M. I experience that with being here and reacting to your reactions!!! Whenever I hear the Carpenters, I think of "Close To You" and the memory of hearing Karen Carpenter's voice for the 1st time. I always think of my big brother, too, because he loves all things Carpenters ✌️

I think it says something profound about music that people with dementia who have sadly forgotten so much can often connect and remember old songs even after they’ve forgotten most of the facts of their lives -names, places, may be all but gone, but old songs remain. That’s how deep music gets into us as human beings.

I'm right there with you about Chester Bennington and Linkin Park. It's unusual when a celebrity's passing affects me more than a momentary sadness. But Chester's did, and still affects me to this day. It took me a long time to even be able to listen to Linkin Park songs without being brought to tears. I do remember Karen Carpenter's passing also making me very sad----just so tragic.

Hi, Shawn: This is the first song on side two of their Now And Then album. You should do a special video and take a bit of time to do the entire side. They go from this song about the oldies into their versions of about six actual oldies and the whole of side two is a blast.

For a more "rocking" song of theirs, check out "Good-bye to Love". They caught a lot of guff over it because it was a bit different than their softer side. Her brother Richard not only played keyboards and sang with her, but also wrote, arranged, and instrumental in the recordings. He used the same multitracking that Les Paul pioneered while recording his wife, Mary Ford. Karen always considered herself a drummer that could sing and due to shyness, it took a while for her step out from the drum kit and take center stage.

If it wasn't for Karen Carpenter's wonderful vocals I might have considered this another of those cop-out manipulative tear-jerker songs. It seams a bit too easy to pull the strings by talking about nostalgia itself. And it is an easy song in many ways. The melody is derived from a dozen other songs, and the lyrics are simple. The thing that elevates it beyond a simple pop song is the vocal quality and the vocal arrangement. Richard was masterful in his harmony arrangements to complement Karen's voice, many of which were done with just the two of them overdubbing harmonies in the studio. I was wondering how he's fared without her all these years, but apparently he and his wife are doing quite well and have contributed millions to the arts in their community. He is 77.

I'm pretty sure the guitar effect you hear, if it's the twangy thing, is just an electric sitar. It was used a ton in the early to mid '70s. A great example of it being used can be found on this hit, "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bc0KhhjJP98.htmlsi=juvcb_OqQTwxawH_
