During the 2016 election, the Carrier factory’s decision to move jobs from Indiana to Mexico was a story that stuck. Donald Trump won a political victory when he convinced the CEO of Carrier’s parent company, United Technologies, to keep 800 jobs in Indiana. Trump's efforts run counter to a broader global trend, however. Most factory jobs haven’t been outsourced, they’ve just disappeared thanks to automation. In this documentary, The Atlantic travelled to Indiana to talk to Carrier employees and see how they're handling the shift.

Billy Potts ummmmm. Why do you think companies look to cheaper labor? Cuz the unions get greedy

The reason McDonalds has been slow to automate is because labor price has been reasonable, when a company is trying to compete with the Pacific rim and stay in USA, they must automate. So again the trade deals are driving Automation beyond what it otherwise would be. Business simply responds to the market and our markets are in part created by trade deals. Trump can not create the glory days of the 1950;s but he can and I think will create a much more secure labor force through 1) protectionist trade and 2) limits the flood of immigration which drives wages down for the few remaining jobs.
