My opinion as guitar player for 30 years...His style of music- guitar playing is Tele oriented. I listen to a lot of songs from the Cars and I keep hearing country-rockabilly influenced style. Its interesting that he brought that fuller sound and flare to punk rock in the Cars. Never realized that when I was listening to the Cars as a 20 something year old. Heck I am only realizing it now in my 50's. Elliot is a guitar playing genius and legend in my book that gets overlooked by many.

That was the most eloquent description of the joy of guitar playing I've ever heard. That joy has shone thru every solo you've ever played. Thanks, Elliott, for continuing to inspire.

Very much agree. Listen to The Cars early stuff through some good headphones and the great licks and solos come through more cleanly - because The Cars were a heavily layered band. Or see them in concert in 1980 like I did - and it's like - oh, that guy flippin' rocks....

I can think of plenty of other guitarist who truly are underrated, Elliot, on the other hand, gets the kudos he deserves...he is very highly respected amongst the twanger set. And lets face it, he has sold a few records.

My Takeaway listening to Elliot Easton: humble, nice, smart, a bit nerdy, and well spoken. It’s interesting, you never heard of anyone from the band the cars getting in trouble, doing drugs, messing up hotel rooms. They were just master musicians who formed a tremendous band.

Elliot was in Columbia, PA back in 1980 to help sell Dean Guitars. He was such a nice guy, and very nervous to be speaking in front of a room full of people. He and Dean Zelinsky (who looked like a hippie at the time) walked about the place chatting with us all. He put a Cadillac in my hands and said, "Try it out." It felt natural in my hands, but I was in love with the ML Standard. I ordered one in black with cream binding and it was "the" guitar until it was stolen in 1999.

The best times of my life thanks to The Cars. Ric Ocasek got so much attention compared to the rest of the band. Of course Benjamin Orr got some of the spotlight too but looking back I remember playing air guitar to all of Elliot's great guitar riffs. The late 70's were so awesome with great New Wave bands, Talking Heads, Blondie, Elvis Costello etc. But for me it was all about The Cars. Met and dated my beautiful redheaded wife of 37 years to their soundtracks. Zeppelin was done. Disco sucked. New Wave came along and just made punk and rock so cool again. Thank you Elliot!

At 16 I washed dishes in an industrial kitchen to buy my first electric too! There's a lot to be said for earning your own money to buy that first electric. Pops didn't say a word, but he wasn't too happy about. Funny thing, I am still playing guitar 46 years later.

This cat is SOOOOO underrated, its sickening. Elliot is one of the most tasteful guitar player/musicians ever. He has been a great influence on me as a guitar player, since the first Cars album came out. So tasteful and melodic. Yes, the Cars were/are considered New Wave, but they and Elliot's playing are much more then that.

Its funny, as time goes on and with the development of the internet and youtube I think a lot more people are realizing the talents of Elliot. He sure can craft a solo and magical little fills. Just the right amount of seasoning added to his playing. :)

Played guitar for 50 plus years and the Tele is my go to guitar every time. It’s the guitar I write with, the guitar that makes me sound like me but playing a Telecaster. I never seem to sound like me with my Strat or Les Paul, The Tele is instantly recognisable but still is able to make “your” sound, mainly because as Elliot says, it makes it a part of you.

Elliot Easton can wear whatever he effing wants. He is a Master. To hell with the maniacal shredders and nonsensical noodlers out there, not demonstrating expertise but putting on a show to make you think they are good. EE is one bad-ass guitarist. As a female re: this interview attire; I compliment him and say he looks great here. Love the hat, the shades, the striped shirt AND THE GD BOOTS YA'LL ARE pissing and moaning about. MY GOD, how trivial and small. Listen to the man talk and learn something. Listen to his most passionate years of playing 1978-1980. But listen to live videos. Find the Musikladen Concert aired in Germany 1979. Watch him particularly on the 6 minute "Take What You Want" and then come back here and run your mealy-mouths.

Couldn’t agree more about a Tele. When ever I am trying to learn a lick or song I do it on my Tele. Twang sends shivers up my spine even at 59 y/o and I’m from NYC. Keef is my favorite and the Stones are all about twang, hell first three Beatles albums were nothing but. Elliot Easton , (whose autograph I got at Peaches Record store in Fort Lauderdale when the Cars toured Candio) was always about twangy licks on the albums and I love that! Before the haters start I know the Beatles and early Stones didn’t play Tele, the guitar tone was twangy single pups from Rics and Epis. Obviously From late 60s Keef adopted it as main. George played a rosewood Tele on a few Beatles tracks

The string through body bridge gives a Tele a rock solid feel that makes you feel like you're in the command chair. And while it has just two single coil pickups, which limits the tone palette, it's so versatile. Each position has it's timber and it's not just like, oh, it sounds like that pickup only with less brightness. Oh no, each pickup is a different bird and the middle position has a beautiful tone all it's own. It's hard not to love a good Tele. And it doesn't have to be expensive, just well made.

I share your pain and left-hand dominance. I always liked Gibson SGs because they are almost symmetrical for high-fret access, and I also posted that I bought a BC Rich Warlock and modified it to play upside-down. Good luck and good practicing to you.

My solution was to buy a $ 200 Korean B.C. Rich Warlock, with a sort of symmetrical shape and 24 frets for 2 full octaves, and carefully cut away the lower bout so I can play it upside down. It doesn't have a sweet one-piece neck like a Tele, but you may get used to it, just a suggestion, my friend.

Interesting, I'm right handed but find if easier or more comfortable as Elliot says to play left handed for all the mentioned reasons. Plus. I have more dexterity in my right hand for making chord shapes, note playing and all the other heavy lifting, unlike my left hand which only has to strum or pick strings. Jimi Hendrix was actually right handed but preferred playing left handed, he could play either way. Please no comments on which hand is used for masturbation, my hot, hot, hot girl friend handles that department.

Sadly, here is one of the greatest rock guitarists ever and he is surrounded by RIGHTY teles! Just like Fender- no cool guitars for lefties. They will only build cool lefty guitars through the Custom Shop and charge an arm and a leg. There are tons of cool righty guitars in regular production but only a few for us lefties and their either black, white, or sunburst. Fender blows.

Bullshit. 1.Actually he didn't use Gibsons 99% of the time, and If it was true I guarantee 99% is not accurate. 2. In the Gibson videos, he was talking about his life the whole time and giving advice, not sitting there endorsing Gibson the whole time. 3. He's actually used a Fender Strat, Tele, Lead, Dean guitars, Gretsch guitars and Kramer guitars Besides Gibson.
