Elliot Easton is the king of short guitar riffs. I swear you can play a few bars and quickly identify the song! I freaking love this band! RIP Benjamin Orr and Rick Ocasek. And to the rest of the band…we love you! Elliot I love your interviews!
Although Ric and Benjamin are dearly missed I think we need to make sure we show our appreciation, admiration, and respect to Elliott, Greg and Dave because without them Ric and Benjamin couldn't have gave the WORLD their absolute BEST ❤️
I like it too when Elliot goes rockabilly. I couldn't believe this song when I first heard it on my local AM radio station late in '78. I thought, "Oh wow, this is 1956 guitar playing in a 70s song!" Elliot Easton is the kind of lead guitarist I always wanted to be: somebody who knows all of rock and roll's history and could speak every language it ever had. Wow, this still blows me away. The whole band was awesome.
I wholeheartedly agree with you westpoint64 Only difference for myself…is I wanted to play and sing (and be cool as heck) with my Bass just like Ben. Benjamin, Tina Weymouth, Peter Cetera and Paul McCartney were artists that inspired me to pick up the Bass. Each of them could thump their bass and sing amazingly sweet.
The Cars were my generation of music back in the day. I'm 54 years old now and Cars is what I listen to all night with the headphones on (insomnia....it's 3am *sigh*). Individually they are all awesomely talented and gifted, and to put them together.....well, I can't even think of the word to describe them. Thank God they all found each other to create this magic for us.
I don’t think a single one of them missed a note here. Elliot’s a guitar hero, Ben had the most melodic Voice whether singing Lead or Backup and was no slouch on the bass either, Greg the way he could lay keyboards melodies between the guitars is mind boggling, David not flashy, but one of the tightest sounding drummers ever, and Ric a songwriting genius….. Enough said.
I wouldn’t dare let my heavy metal friends know that I liked The Cars, while in 1980s high school. 😂 I would of been laughed out of the crowd. Now, I really don’t care what people think. The Cars will always be, a timeless band.
I can't praise Orr or Ocasek enough....but Eliot is rocking it on the guitar. Anyone who has picked up a guitar can appreciate his playing on this song.
Oh yeah. And he adjusts his style and guitar to the needs of the song. This is such an obvious Tele song, but he will play a Strat or Les Paul on other songs. But always very musical.
@@aquamarine99911 He said,(Eliot) in an interview, he, doesn't work out a solo on the guitar. He would visualize the part before even touching the guitar. Now that's brilliant. No wonder his guitar solos are so good. His guitar playing in general is on par with some of the greats. 🎸 P.S. Ric Ocasek just died.9-15-19. Sad.😔 R.I.P.
@@huesevers4532 Yeah, that's what made me look at this stuff again. Eliot's solos are part of what makes the songs great. That's why when he plays them live, he can't deviate from them. Hope got some points on the royalties.
i'm certainly not a musical expert. i've always loved the cars, but never thought of their music as new wave. always rock. new wave to ME would Flock of Seaguls, Pet Shop Boys etc. i could be wrong.
Yeah whether The Cars themselves are new wave is up for debate, they're undoubtedly a rock and roll band. They did however help lay the groundwork for it just like The Clash.
He tossed his guitar pic at me, ...1984 , only after I put my hand out, and foolishly pulled it away twice. I was star struck by the whole thing I guess. Rick Ocasek was about to hand it to me, luckily it hit me in the solar plexus, and I found it at the end of the concert when the lights came back on. Cheers !
Oh Benjamin is so funny in this video!!! I love the looks he gives the cameras at different times!! He's got such personality:) Benjamin we really miss you!!!!
Ben's eyes at 1:24! Ha! Such a loss for the Cars to be inducted into RRHOF without him! I'm sure he'll be with them in spirit. Still so happy for the rest of the guys!! Finally!!
Damn, Easton is such a great fucking player! His solos are incredibly good. I've been playing longer than he had to that point, I have better equipment (probably) and I still can't pull off but a couple of his solos. Plus, he NAILS them live, which is so impressive. Damn shame that not more people give him the credit he deserves.
He gets overlooked all the time but I really think there's a strong case to be made that he is the best rock guitarists of all time. He just has a range that no other player has, this song, Just What I Needed but then there's also his playing guitar synth on Heartbeat City. Pure genius.
Their was so many great bands back then. They might have been over looked. But, not by me. I know greatness when I see it. And, make no mistake. The Cars were one of the great bands of the 20th Century. 🎸
Such an amazing band, way ahead of the times !! Love when Benjamin is doing his thing and realizes he's on camera, too cute. Every time I watch one of their videos I catch these great little seconds of coolness !!!
This was the first song I ever heard from the Cars and I was hooked. They were one of the best bands they had such a unique sound. It was a part of my youth, now gone with the loss of Ric and Ben.
Im 14 and my sister is 13 and we absolutely looooove the cars!! Our dad introduced us to them when we were really little. We will always love them they have such great music!
Another one gone, seems like their now dropping like flies! Guess it just my generation of bands and music, loved the Cars also! Rest in Peace Ric Ocasek and thanks for ALL the good music ......
ltimm i was about to post those exact words... lol.. a big thumbs up to whoever had their hands on the spotlight and the camera for giving us that awesome solo to watch and listen and have the hell impressed out of us!
I like that you can suprise someone ...................Just some video ......LOL............I don't like the News is bad, We are turning into a giant cult....Cheers
Michael Smith well ya know.....its not fair to say no one rocks like this. We still got some of the greatest out there and they are bringin it better than ever! But yes The Cars are Awesome! ❤
When i bought this record I l,isten to this song at least 20 times in a row. My mother shouted it was dinner time. I ran back n forth between the dinner table and my room to replay this song, over and over again, so I could hear it while I was eating :)
Never really realized how perfect that Elliot's telecaster fit this song until watching this video. There are lots of guitar sounds featured on Cars songs. But that sound and picking style with the Tele really, really works with this song.
This is the first song I ever noticed on the radio by The Cars. It was so unique with the lyrics that almost made no sense, but somehow did. Just like my best friend would now have my used to mine girlfriend. It blew my mind .... ( and still does ). The Cars, genius ! Need to be the Rock Hall of fame and aren't ....
Music for the ages from the CARS....i wore out all their album and cassettes in the 1980's....absolute Masters ....unreal...R.I.P to the two Giants in RICK OKASECK and BENJAMMIN ORR...
The lead guitar riffs in this song are unbeatable! That lick he goes to at the end of the first chorus and later is as good as it gets. Just encapsulates everything a rock riff should be - berry to richards and back again.
Love the way Benjamin is holding back vocally !! Not that Ric doesn't have a great unique voice !! But Ben is such a class act and never over power Ric's singing !!! Both great singer's but it was magic the 1st time I heard him sing and after all these years.... still is magic ❤
And that my friends was The Cars. If you missed them, My condolences to you. But you can help to know them by binge listening to their music. You will never be the same.
Best music, Ben and Ric, Ben's voice was so haunting and the look on his face, wow! Ric is also very unique, a one of a kind band! Late 70's music was great! ✌🍀🌹😎
This actually happened to me. My best friend sodded off with my girlfriend back in 79. Fortunately our friendship was the greater. Rip Ray, miss you mate. Rip Ben, thanks for the memories.
+jerryg1964 I just pointed out (in a comment today) that this riff may have been lifted from the Beatle's "I Will" on The White Album. What do you think? The only difference is the Beatle's one is acoustic.
Total apprecthion for what they did. Perfection, and blend when we all wanted their sound and songs. Just absalute kickin sound over and over and still.
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a band do the hand claps onstage. This song brings back such great memories for me. I love the vintage gear, too. It seems like this was forever ago. They gave a great live show! I saw them live in Chicago in '79 and some of the rough edges had come off the act by then. Still, they rocked!
The cars had a unique sound and I've never had the opportunity to listen to them more. But hey if a group can be heard by millions at LiveAid they can't be that bad!!🏴🏴❤️😁🎼🎸😃🤭
Excellent performance - tight band - spot-on drumming - everything in tune - everyone trying their best - skilled professionals. Wish I had been there!
I'm right there with you Cindy! I stay up late and can't get enough of these guys as I am rediscovering them and myself after many years. I'm 55 but, I will never get old!
