The catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 16, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, Holden goes on a walk after breakfast. He thinks about how selfless the nuns were and he can hardly imagine anyone being a generous and giving. He goes to Broadway to buy a record called “Little Shirley Beans” for his sister. He thinks that she would enjoy the record and notes that all though it is for children, the black blues singer makes the tracks sound raunchy and not cute. He thinks about phoebe, whom he believes to be wonderful because though she is only 10, she understands what Holden means when he talks to her. He sees a boy walking in the street singing “If a body catch a body coming through the rye”. The childish innocence cheers him up and he decides to give Jane a buzz, but he hangs up when her mother answers the phone. In preparation for his date, he buys tickets to a show called “I know my Love”.
