The catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 16, narrated by Isaac Birchall
In this chapter, Holden goes on a walk after breakfast. He thinks about how selfless the nuns were and he can hardly imagine anyone being a generous and giving. He goes to Broadway to buy a record called “Little Shirley Beans” for his sister. He thinks that she would enjoy the record and notes that all though it is for children, the black blues singer makes the tracks sound raunchy and not cute. He thinks about phoebe, whom he believes to be wonderful because though she is only 10, she understands what Holden means when he talks to her. He sees a boy walking in the street singing “If a body catch a body coming through the rye”. The childish innocence cheers him up and he decides to give Jane a buzz, but he hangs up when her mother answers the phone. In preparation for his date, he buys tickets to a show called “I know my Love”.

I think we see something very revealing when Holden speaks of the museum and how it doesn’t change. I do believe we are seeing the adolescent struggle in him leaving childhood with sorrow. He doesn’t want things to change but he sees it is inevitable. Everything he likes has to do with childhood. It really is getting very clear. And the indecisive is a product of the struggle of becoming an adult. He cannot stop it. And then there are hormones in the mix. Quite a study in psychology.

It’s such an amazing book, and though I still don’t like Holden, I really appreciate his character as a representation of the teenaged experience. Of thinking that you’re potentially “Mr. big” at High school, and then suddenly being thrown out into the world and realising how small you are as how big and scary the world is.

i find holden insufferable and unlikable (in a very realistic teenager way), but here i think we finally see a few glimpses of why he is the way he is. as another commenter said, his attachment to children and his own childhood really shines through. things were simpler then, more predictable, and the world he has to learn to deal with is getting scarier and more complicated by the year. consequences are more impactful. i might finally start to understand this kid a bit!

Once you start to piece together that he lost his brother at a super young age, and that his brother left to go to the other side of the country, that his parents are super absent, and that his best friend had a very abusive father, his reactions start to make more sense. He is just a kid who had to grow up super quick because of the home environment around him, and he is now struggling to realise that he is in fact not an adult and that scares the hell out of him

Thanks for this audiobook mate. I'm really enjoying it. English is my 2nd language. I didn't understand if those Indian guys in the museum were real people or statues?

My pleasure! If I am remembering the book properly, then the Indian and Eskimos that he is talking about are statues.

@@TheEssentialReads it’s a honest mistake. I have to tell you. This is my very first audiobook book I’ve ever listen 🎧 in my life. As a English as a second language Live in NewYork. The “Catcher on the Rye “ really got me and your voice play a fascinating role for the entirely story. I would continually listen 🎧 your “ more to come” thanks.

I still try to reply to everyone, Sorry about any errors, I believed that I got them all before publishing. I generally try to record the whole chapter in 1 go with mistakes and all, then I edit the book together, removing any errors that I find. Really sorry that I missed some. I hope that it didn't ruin the book for you :(

People please I preach to you out of love belive on the lord Jesus Christ and trust in him for you salvation and not in yourself Christ came to die for our sin we have all sinned and deserve hell but God is so merciful and Jesus died on the cross to take our punishment so that who ever belive on him will not perish but have eternal life john 3:16 romans 10:9 if we confess with our mouth Jesus is lord and belive in our heart that god rose him from the dead we will be saved we can not earn salvation it is the free gift from God❤
