The first two causes of a hypersensitive nervous system are EXACTLY what has been happening to me. Wow, this is eye-opening. The impulse for someone is to seek help and get it resolved. If the practitioner or type fails in helping, or helps only partially, the instinct is to find another, and so it leads down this rabbit hole of desperately seeking a solution. But little did I realize that doing so is actually causing more and more hypersensitivity. This makes a lot of sense!

I'm on my 4th doctor. Each has a different explanation for what's going on with my stomach. Only one said "you have a hyper-senitive stomach," which led me to research the word, and I found out the proper name is 'viseral hypersensitivity'. Even with antacid medicine and anti-depressants, sometimes the symptoms still come through. I'm talking burning, nausea, and vomiting, and I dare not watch a killing scene on TV or drive over a pothole in the road. My stomach always reacts. I've also read somewhere that if you take a probiotic and drink peppermint, it will stop or slow down the symptoms. At this point, I'm willing to try anything if it just gets me back to normal. After all, who wants to be on medication for life. VH seems to be a fairly new issue that's developing with other gastro problems, so most gastro doctors can only treat symptoms as they have no clue how to stop it. I've been told by my current doctor that there may be no magic bullet, but I pray they find one.

Good video. Sounds like it cames straight from the book Hope and Help for Your Nerves. What I understand now is that the triggers don't matter, what matters is really understanding that you have a sensitive nervous system and that there are practical ways to avoid at least most of the pain. It sort of works for me. I learned to live with it. When I get the warning, the burning sensation of pain and tension, I treat it as a warning sign and try to drop everything I am doing and recover for a little while. Yes, I still don't have the explanations or the magic trick that makes it go away, but at they very least I can stop the beginning pain and tension from exploding into an entire day of hell
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy 2 года назад
So the next step might be to slowly grade the exposure into those uncomfortable sensations so that you might teach your nervous system to tolerate more over time. Haven't heard of that book but will try to check it out!

this is very helpful in recognizing why my nervous system is so heightened --- my question is, how can you reduce the sensitivity of your nervous system when it's in a constant heightened state like this? I do feel like when my anxiety rises DUE to pain, my pain also rises, which causes more anxiety and all those other things that you mentioned. So, how do you break the cycle?
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy 4 года назад
Hi Lauren. You ask a really good question. There are actually over 22 things you can do. Meditation is a really big one, sleep, working with a therapist to address anxiety, gentle cardio exercise to name a few. Check out some of the other videos on pain and you will get some more information. Also there are a lot of books, videos, resources on pain science including the Curable Health app. The more that you learn about the system the more control you can get over the system.
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy 2 года назад
Such a good question. The answer is different for each patient. The first step is the education piece. The more you know about what is happening and why it is happening then it becomes less threatening over time. That is a piece of the puzzle. The other piece is helping your system become more resilient and less reactive over time. This is through a combination of graded exposure to activities that your system fears and a process known as descending inhibition. Keep learning about the way the system works and seek out a PT who specializes in pain science to help you on the path!

It boils down to original failed medical treatment! Health care has failed, the pain is real it is a physical problem. It is not just all in our heads. I had this figured out 44 yrs ago and still hurt to this day!
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy 6 месяцев назад
I am sorry if you got the idea that I was saying this is "all in your head." That term implies that pain is not real. All pain is real-- however, some pain is due to structural reasons, some pain is due to nerve injury and some pain is due to the central nervous system not functioning properly. I will create a newer video that hopefully is more clear in explaining these differences. I do agree that failed treatment is a component of persistent pain and the research supports this. But it can be that the diagnosis was not correct in the first place.

More accurate then complicated or clinical explanations. Drugs are huge factor (incl changing type/dose) effecting daily life, emotion etc. Also stress of giving history of issue/pain for ea new consult (even w/detailed ref) in restricted appt times esp if issue gets more complicated for diff reasons incl ones given in video. Anxiety, anger etc can be subconscious to cope and get through. PS you forgot psychologists and surgeons in your list.

Is there a way medical professionals can help patients navigate the medical system to prevent failed treatment and different explanations? What would be a better system to promote provider collaboration to decrease explanations and possibly failed treatments?
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy 11 месяцев назад
You are asking the million dollar question. I think that the more that providers self educate to know the different types of pain and what causes them the better they can be at preventing failed treatment. Providers that also approach a patient from a 'trauma-informed' perspective will decrease the amount of times the patient returns to see the MD. The research supports that if providers take a "biopsychosocial" approach to the treatment of pain and avoid the "bio-medical" approach that focuses on the tissues, they are more likely to decrease fear and improve outcomes with patients.

@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy
@PainSciencePhysicalTherapy 9 месяцев назад
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering with tinnitus. I have worked with other patients on this. I have had patients who did well with pain education combined with brain retraining. Others have done well with medication that addresses anxiety. Others have done well working with a PT who specializes in working on the jaw and neck! Tinnitus can sometimes be due to TMJ (temporo-mandibular)/ jaw dysfunction. I would recommend you find a PT who specializes in this before you go the route of medication or other things.

I will be releasing some videos in the next few weeks to months on specific treatments you can try. Gentle cardiovascular exercise is really good for this system. @PainSciencePhysicalTherapy 2 года назад
I am not familiar with your diagnosis. However a hypersensitive nerve does not mean that a nerve is damaged. A hypersensitive nervous system is not damaged either. Damage implies a permanent change. The brain can be taught not to hyperrespond to the nerves. The nerves themselves are still healthy and intact nerves-- they can still conduct electricity and cause muscles to fire or allow you to feel pressure and sensation. In your case I do not know if you have a permanent change to the nerves and if they are in fact injured or damaged. You can still work with the brain to change how it responds to the nerves to train it not to produce pain.

Hi Victor. Thank you for your comment. This video lists what are commonly known as 'yellow flags' which are psycho-social components that contribute to a nervous system being hypersensitive. This is one piece of the puzzle. There are biological changes that also occur in the nervous system and these sometimes happen as a result of physical injury or trauma to the nerves. However, this is only 1 small piece of a very complicated puzzle. I recommend you listen to the other videos that are on chronic pain and maybe attend one of my webinars to get more information. Hope this helps!
