The chaotic multi-blind attempt that won 2nd place at Worlds 2023

Despite all this I managed to get 49/57!
Oh and I forgot to mention in the video; there was a 14 point cut-off for the first attempt that added to the stress of the first attempt. And I think someone's phone went off at some point haha.
But, despite all this, I managed to get a podium at Worlds which was my goal this year so I'm very happy with how it turned out!
Unfortunately, I did terribly in 4bld/5bld, and no records broken (aside from Clock PRs), but hopefully more to come with my multi-bld in coming years!
(I filmed the video using the ultrawide camera on my phone, so the image/distances are slightly distorted)

That was the most stressed I've been watching a cubing video. So much respect to you for keeping your head through it all and coming out with a silver. Congratulations.

This venue had water leaks due to the typhoon of the previous week, I guess that's why it was late and kinda chaotic, there are errors that make no sense at all but I can understand some of them

Congrats to handling/adapting soo good! Man if you had comps like in my country you would be immune to all of that, my 29/30 was in the middle of a shopping center 😂, my 18 sec wr had a concert and a freaking train noise in the middle of the solve

Oh my god, this is horrible. Truly unacceptable for a world championship to be run this way. The cutoff was also incredibly stupid. Very impressive that you were able to get a decent attempt with all of this happening. Here's hoping the conditions will be much much better in 2025!

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve heard news about how bad the conditions were in multi-blind, but now that I could see what happened it is clear that a lot more can be done in a much better way (like, why are people walking around so often?)

@Oranjules
@Oranjules 10 месяцев назад
Wow this is indeed quite an awful situation! As an organizer who sometimes organizes multi but have no experience solving at that level I had one small question though: it looks like you were distracted by what the "judge" was doing (obviously I get why getting an unexpectedly judge in the first place is super distracting). If you had known from the beginning that you would get a judge, and if they had stayed in place for the whole attempt, is it also an issue if they look at their phone or do some other stuff? Or do you think an harmonica holder is better for everyone because it's less distracting for you? And is this shared by other top multiblinders? Anyway congrats on 2nd place, especially under such circumstances!
@ezrahirschi
@ezrahirschi 10 месяцев назад
I think with judges vs. harmonica holder it depends on the competitor. It highly depends on how much the judge moves, but also how used to the competitor is. In terms of being on a phone, for me it's probably fine if I can't see the phone screen, in this case I could which was distracting but at least it was far enough in my peripheral where I could block it out. (But also this adds to stress because I'd be wondering whether the attempt could be DNFed because the judge could in theory be showing me something on his phone.) In the UK, they always use harmonica holders for full multi-bld attempts, and the only downside is the 5-10 seconds lost from putting it on, but in this attempt I already lost those 10 seconds on just the memo on one of the cubes. If I had known that someone was going to be sat next to me it also would have helped a lot. At Swiss Nationals 2022 I had a judge and it went very well and I was happy to not have to use a harmonica holder. From what the other mblders were saying at the start of the attempt, most of them prefer harmonica holders because the distractions of a judge aren't worth it.
@ezrahirschi
@ezrahirschi 10 месяцев назад
And if the judge is on their phone or doing something else, why are they sat next to me and not just at the front overlooking several people?
@ezrahirschi
@ezrahirschi 10 месяцев назад
I think it's probably best to give each competitor the choice, and then if there are any individual judges make sure they distract the competitor as little as possible
@Oranjules
@Oranjules 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for your answers! I think a judge being on their phone isn't unexpected when they are waiting more than 30 min without doing anything else, but it's indeed not ideal. I guess we could have judges waiting somewhere else waiting for the competitor to memo so they don't disturb them, and then coming to put the paper when you're starting (since you won't be distracted by someone coming if you don't see anything, unless they make a ton of noise)

I was getting consistently 50+ points at home that week, so maybe, I also did badly because I sleep terribly before important comps. The second attempt had virtually no distractions, and it felt a lot better, but nerves crippled my exec accuracy
