Something to note is that Chappell has had local drag queens from each city be her openers on tour since at least 2022. Not a lot of artists are supporting the queer drsg community in that way, and it’s a great opportunity to give those drag queens more exposure to their own market and make some money!
Just a correction: her four year relationship was actually with a man. She was writing about her lesbian fantasies while with him for awhile, then branched out with women after that ended. Awesome video!
I found Chappell when I saw Olivia in concert and I was just shocked by her vocals and started listening to her. At that time she had 3million ish monthly listeners. Now she has over 11million and this is in the span of about a month. Just blows my mind and I so proud!
Mine is a similar story, except I discovered her when I bought my tickets and spent 5 months getting to know her before my Guts tour date! It’s crazy how far she’s come
I just discovered her last year when Olivia mentioned her as her Top Artist on Spotify. I really got curious so I searched her then the rest is history!! Iam playing her Midwest Album nonstop!😂 I even played her Whole Album in full blast huge speakers in News Years Eve!!😂
Just dropping in here as someone in Asia who just discovered Chappell Roan, regarding her branding as a 'Midwest Princess', as an international fan, it's very smart too, because it taps into the exotic nature of Americana for us international fans! This was such a fantastic look and analysis of Chappell's rise. Her music itself is amazing, but combined with the lyrics and the visuals and persona... I'm IN.
I’m so glad she’s getting her flowers. I’ve been obsessed with her since 2020, and I remember being SO excited when she finally released new music (Naked in Manhattan). Watching her livestream on TikTok when it got released and seeing all of these queer women just absolutely geeking out over this fun, catchy, sapphic song was so lovely. ~10K followers on that day, 1 million as of today. I pledge allegiance to Chappell Roan 🫡❤️
I found her over a year ago when Naked in Manhattan was recommended to me on Spotify and I added it to a playlist, it quickly became my favorite song!! I then went on her RU-vid channel and found casual and quickly loved that song too!🤭 I've been listening to her ever since🩷💕
Chappell Roan has easily become my ride or die in such a short span of time. Her aura is so magnetic and captivating. She was made for the spotlight and I will root for her til the day I die
chappel had 8 million monthly listeners at the time of this podcast. Its been 2 weeks and she's already at 16 million, literally double😭😭😭 this girl's going so many places😊
I randomly ran across Pink Pony Club in early 2022 and INSTANTLY connected with her persona, perspective, and angle as an artist. I was perched for Femininominon and all the other singles, and had no clue at the time all she was doing behind the scenes to make her music career happen. So happy she pushed through and got her break bc she’s incredible
i knew when I met Chappelle Circa 2019 opening for Declan Mckenna at a small venue that the poster she signed would be a relic one day. I became a fan the day I heard her sign, she's always been a hypnotic performer. She was also to kind to me and my friend, sister, and mom. It was my first concert and my favorite so far. I'd love to hear her live again.
This!! I see a lot of people saying she reminds them of this artist or that artist, but Cyndi Lauper was the first artist I thought of! I can't get enough of Chappell!
Drag is for everyone! There’s no reason that Chappell should be held to an unfair standard of not being able to wear drag just because she’s a cis woman… hello everyone can go up on stage and be beautiful. Drag is an art form that everyone can partake in ❤️💗
One of many things I found so refreshing about her Coachella set was how few phones were out in the audience. Everyone in that audience looked completely engaged and living their best life in the moment. It was truly beautiful and honestly made me tear up with joy!
The EP had a much darker tone to it, fit her voice very well imo, BUT nothing could beat the current sound she’s found. I was lucky enough to see her open for Declan & meet her in 2018. I was immediately intoxicated by her voice, and have been following/supporting her since then. Watching this whole journey & blow up IRL has been such a joy 🥹🤗❤️ I feel like a proud mom
I first listened to Chappell roan on her tiny desk performance and was completely BLOWN AWAY. I immediately ran to Spotify to listen to the full album and I have been obsessed since. It’s crazy too bc when I first went on her Spotify a couple weeks ago she has about 5 million monthly listeners, now it’s over double that at like 12 million! That much growth In literally like 2 weeks is INSANE. Soooo deserved she’s gonna be a force to be reckoned with and I’m so here for it!
Two of my daughters saw her last year when she was on tour. My middle daughter, Laura, & her husband actually ran into her at a thrift shop while they were in the area of the venue! Laura said that she is incredibly nice in addition to being fantastic in concert. I don't think they even knew the other one was going because they don't even live in the same state anymore... They both spoke very highly of her- so, I was curious about her. ... And, I've been obsessed ever since. Her songs are so clever, funny ( and sometimes heartbreaking- my favorite, Kaleidoscope.) Also, besides the set dressing & fun, her voice is stunning. (& I'd lay odds that she's been getting vocal training, cuz her voice continuously seems better every time I hear her.) I'm so so happy she's getting deserved attention.
She did mention she spent a lot of last year training, i believe it was in preparation for tours. Specifically she mentioned doing HIIT training while singing so she can move and sing/belt without the combo making her throw up/ want to throw up!
been listening to chappell since pink pony club and seeing her get her flowers makes my heart so happy. she has such a passion for performing and such a stage presence you can’t look at anyone but her. i think i may be in love but she is my icon so
I just discovered chappel roan a few days ago when some high school theater kids sang 3 of her songs at local karaoke.... I'm a mom of 2, about to turn 29, and the way Pink Pony Club woke up the 16 year old girl inside of me has been liberating in a way that was so unexpected and is so sweet 🥰🌈🦄🎀
Never heard of her so I went to listen to one her songs just to get a little background before listening you guys and I’ve been on her spotify page for almost an hour now, might never even getting around to watching your video 😂. She’s so good!
I've been a huge fan of Chappell since her debut album released (I remember staying up late just to listen to it as soon as it came out), and her fame is very much overdue!!
I literally started following her on Spotify about a month ago and she was around 2 million and now she’s at 12 million. It’s amazing! Her album RAFOAMWP is literal pop perfection-not a single skip. Her voice is also incredible and her visuals are just so unique and not like anything being done rn. People say that she is giving early Lady Gaga days and I couldn’t agree more. I can’t wait to see how much she continues to grow and becomes even more of an icon!💕💕
Just found Chappell Roan a few days ago and already have all her songs memorized, I LOVE her! Not only is she GORGEOUS and can SIIIING but she's stirred up something in me. I'm a 31 year old bisexual woman who's ALWAYS wanted to be a drag queen, I think they're the most fabulous people in the world and Chappell has shown me I can be, she's such a special artist 🥰🥰🥰
20:24 demi already has a rock album…? lol her last album “Holy Fvck” is so fire she really embraces the rock sound. I feel like it didn’t get the attention it deserved
Yeah, she came on my radar through my TikTok fyp during the guts tour, and after a few weeks I finally gave her a proper listen. Became obsessed and bought tickets a week before Good Luck Babe came out. I'm glad I got affordable tickets before that blow up!
The part about everyone singing for Chapell, but not necessarily for Sabrina... had the exact same thought just the other day. I had just watched a video of Chapell singing to a small-ish theater, and the crowd is belting out every single lyric so loud her mic can barely keep up. And then I randomly clicked on a live performance of Expresso and I remember thinking, "Why is everyone so QUIET? I can't hear the crowd singing along at all?"
Kind of unrelated but in regards to Sabrina and Chappell, Sabrinas look is so tailored the male gaze and Chappell is obvs all for the female gaze, the difference is so stark it's wild
Maybe it’s because Sabrina has a more “polished” and “clean girl” type of brand so her audience tries to follow the vibe, but Chappell seems more like a bold “diamond in the rough” singer so her fans feel like it’s ok to sing along even if the collective noise won’t be perfect?? Or maybe her fans are more vocal because Chappell is one of the few safe outlets that unapologetically embraces pride joy?
Just now getting into Chappel Roan, and I learned so much I didn’t know about her from this! First time on your guys’ channel and I just want to say I’m really impressed and entertained from your thoughtful conversation and research. Didn’t expect to watch the whole 45 mins but I did. Earned my sub and looking forward to more. 😄
This is my first time being recommended your podcast and AS SOON as I started listening I was hooked. Love your great mix of energy and research! I'm for sure going to listen to all your old episodes now! 😂
i remember being so excited when casual was released- i think i was 15 and just realizing who i was the music video was something ièd been looking for, real quear experiences dressed up in fantasy, i felt seen i love her! cant wait to see her rise further than she already has
Where is the love for HOT TO GO! Chappell has gifted us the equivalent of the sapphic YMCA and when y'all were talking about the dance portion I was waiting so patiently! it's so good and fun, I would've thought En Masse HOT TO GO! dance would basically already be a trend based on it coming pre packaged on a silver platter with a built in dance in the video and all
SLAY FROM ROMANIA. I watch you since before you started the podcast and I cant get enough of you two. Many people from here have great taste in marketing audio media but not to many......
This is my first time listening to this podcast and I really enjoyed it! I was looking for something about an hour long to go in the background while I’m in welding school and this was great❤️
Yay! A Chappell episode! Found you guys on TikTok a while ago from the Kylie Jenner episode and have binge-watched watch all episodes ever since. As someone who is studying marketing, I love watching your videos they are always so interesting and you can tell how much time you guys put into your research. :)
New listener here and I just have to say I love your podcast! I especially love the business and marketing elements!🤩 it combines my appreciation for business and my love of pop culture. I can really tell you guys love what you do, please keep it up 👏
I discovered pink pony club sometime in 2022 after moving to the south. I used to secretly play it on repeat in my AirPods at church as my way of protesting. Naked in manhattan was when my true obsession began. I wish I could thank her for the space she creates for queer people. She came to my city a little over a month ago and said that she knows how important it is for queer people to have somewhere safe to be queer and that she knows how hard it is to do that in places so intolerant of us and then sang picture you lmao. I’m so grateful to her and artists like her.
The tiny desk concert is when I discovered her and OMG I have not stopped listening to her and spreading her gospel to my friends 😂 I grew up in Republic, the town right next to Willard, MO and was shook af to find out that she was from Willard. I hope she does a hometown show here someday 🌈👑😍
I just noticed earlier coco doesn’t follow nicky on instagram after noticing they haven’t uploaded in a while 😭 i love you guyssss i hope this channel isn’t over 😭😭😭
I found her last year when my cousins girlfriend was featured on her insta page (she did the beauty pagent in between sets) and while i never liked pop I have been OBSESSED and i could not be more excited that she's made it to the spotlight. not many artists give credit when they take inspiration from drag queens and also not a lot of artists are so unabashedly queer i love her so much
I started listening to Chappel in 2022 with my kink is karma and then pink pony club, and always felt like it was only a matter of time before she really blew up. I'm surprised most people know her now from Guts etc since when I saw her last November I already felt like she was already ubiquitously loved, at least in the queer community! It's been so exciting to really be a fan of her while she's coming up like this, I just hope I can get tickets when she's selling out arena shows in the next few years! ☺️
Conan is like Freddie mercury?! Is that Conan grey?? I’m obsessed with Freddie so thankyou for this! Also yes to the Chappell love, she truly is our queen 💖
I first listened to Chappell Roan the day after Olivia Rodrigo announced the GUTS world tour and I immediately loved her music, I had absolutely no idea about her background before she back a "mainstream" artist.
