Re: All the comments about Olivia being a "Bad performer" Our job is to study marketing and the public perception. Even when the views of the public disagree with our own opinions. We LOVE Olivia's music. She is truly a musical genius and I love how raw her performances are. However, it's an objective fact that she did get a lot of criticism online for her first few performances. Neither of us took part in said criticism at the time because we disagreed with it and she was so new. We thought it was very unjustified and that is WHY we brought it up. When analyzing any artists career it is important to talk about the good AND the bad ways of public perception. The music industry is not all sunshine and rainbows. It is part of the artist's journey to have to be able to navigate those tricky situations. Regardless of how we feel about it personally, it was the first big speed bump in Olivia's career, and it speaks to her character how well she handled it. It would be a biased and non-thought-out video if we ONLY talked about the good things and none of the obstacles she had to overcome.

tbh abt her singing ability i definitely think that back in 2021 the narrative about her being a bad performer was being pushed because certain small clips were used against her when usually the rest of performance she sounded good. she had a ton more amazing performances but ppl didnt notice them as much compared to 5-20 second clips of her having a voice crack or being out of breath. Also joshua didn't go to the hospital because of the hate. He went to the hospital because of his sepsis. Multiple doctors have said this. Joshua himself has said that the doctors told him that if he didn't get to the hospital in time he would've died. i feel as though this video wasn't really researched fully, some topics seemed like you know very little about and just assumed from what most people said.

I think one thing unique about Olivia as an overnight success is that she was honing her craft for a very long time, just like slow burn artists. She’s been singing since she was in early elementary school and I think she said she’s been seeing a vocal coach almost her whole life. She talented and has been training her skills for most of her life so she might be set up better to handle her overnight success. Time will tell, great video, God bless

Olivia is truly such a good performer and it sucks that people disagree just because of 10 second clips that were taken from a long tour and specifically her first ever tour/performances. She’s grown so much and improved through GUTS and i’m so happy!

Another thing, Olivia was never a bad performer but people on tiktok/twitter would post a 5 second clip where she messed because after all she is human, and people would run with that narrative that she was a bad performer. generally your research about olivia was good enough but i just hate the narrative that yall ran with about her getting "killed" during her first tour. olivia was amazing during SOUR tour and she only got better and better. im not denying the fact that she had some subpar performances but she was never "bad". in fact, her festival performances were actually really good. she headlined the iHeartRadio Festival and the one at Glastonbury and she was amazing in both of them. i get that you guys had a narrative that you wanted to point out about the "overnight fame" artists, but generalizing olivia's SOUR era as a time when she was a "bad performer' is just disrespectful and totally inaccurate. i hope you also pointed out that olivia CHOSE to do a theater tour even if she could have already been headlining a stadium tour. cause that's the type of performer and artist she is. she knows what she can do, and she does her best to give the best show possible to her audience.

Although I agree that Sabrina has greatly improved and 2023 is her year BUT, let's be real, she has always had it. She's a natural performer. Even at 10 and 14 years old, she can perform with confidence and without missing a note. She has NEVER had a bad live performance yet which is crazy to think that she has been in the industry for so long and she's bound to have had messed up at one point BUT SHE HASN'T.

Ok you guys are clearly biased and it shows and get this straight into your head olivia was always writing her original songs and posting on instagram, she wanted to be a songwriter first not a popstar unlike many people and that's why driver's license became a hit, it was a heartbreak ballad written by a 17 year old girl, people saw her for what she is , her ambition, her vision that's why she created an effect and resonated with people unlike some others who survive on manufactured hype on social media and no billboard hot 100 hits or are unable to sell albums. Go on continue diminishing a young girl's success and talent and vouch for the people eho have been in the industry for so long and going to be in their mid twenties soon

hey, i started watching following the sabrina episode (which i loved) and here are just some of my thoughts spring-boarding off of what you guys discussed. *the love triangle drama:* i think the whole drama of joshua/olivia/sabrina was so overblown and honestly makes me still sad to think about. if olivia said smth it would just have confirmed who the song was about and opened another can of worms imo where people would just be digging further in. i think the snl sketch shouldnt have included joshua for that rzn cus by naming them it meant olivia was kinda acknowledging the rumours by acknowledging that. people shouldnt have gotten mad at joshua and sabrina (especially sabrina) over a breakup they knew nothing about. sure, theyd heard olivia's feelings (which are valid as her own experience and something she is allowed to share but also it should be remembered that they're in the context of a girl facing her first big heartbreak who is in the headspace that brings) but they hadnt heard the other 3 sides (joshua's, sabrina's and the truth/reality). the whole situation rlly showed that even in the 2020s people still dont seem to realise that they know nothinga bout celeb's personal lives (and arent entitled to know anything) and that they shouldnt go after young ppl so cruelly. *law suits* as for the law suits, they would have been done on behalf of the labels (who will always be profit motivated) but iirc one of them was olivia's team conceding because they didnt want the same thing to happen with whichever song came after the first lawsuit? it was smth like that. i think that both artists would not have wanted that lawsuit to go down like it did because of their own thoughts on music and the fact that chord progressions are not something you can own. also as a law student w/ an interest in music plagiarism cases, olivia should not have been sued for either. *overnight fame and olivia* the thing about olivia's quick rise to stardom is that even though she is so skilled and, imo, deserving of the accolades she gets for a variety of reasons, people always seem to just expect her to be incredible at everything despite how knew she is the industry because of the fact she is so famous. kind of in a 'oh shes so lucky, she got her big break, these other artists are so much more deserving, she cant even *insert one of the many listless things they think she should already know*' way. imo with the way fame works and the fact that the music industry is at the end of the day an industry, there will always be incredible artists that are overlooked and more mediocre ones with more attention than they deserve - i dont think olivia is in the latter camp (and its clear with guts she is growing as an artist and learning from each new experience) but other people seem quick to put her in it due to her lack of experience. i really do hope that she gets treated better than britney and similar artists (she already seems to be trying to not stick to the 'good girl' confining 'role-model' image that ended up making a lot of young female artists have a rlly hard time w/ the industry) but the way people spoke about sabrina and the way that whole drama went down makes me think sometimes people truly never learn, and maybe assholes like deuxmoi will be for olivia what the tabloids were for britney. i sincerely hope not and from what she's said, it seems like liv's family are very supportive and are helping to keep her grounded but meteoric rises to fame - especially for young girls - does worry me.

the thing about deja vu & cruel summer is that even jack said he wasn’t aware that they were getting credited for it. they were credited without even being noticed. they never asked for it, nor did they even claim it. HOWEVER, at the time, good4u was getting claimed by paramore’s A&R team! hayley even posted something about it, and that was the actual battle going on. I think you guys brought up a good point about in PR, you’re as big as your enemies. personally, I think Olivia’s team was smart to make her biggest “beef” with taylor than ever with paramore or sabrina. they were literally on good terms, and anybody with ears can hear the two songs not being similar at all. BUT with that being said, once credit was given, general public opinion sided with olivia because that was her hero, who was now “stealing” from her. it also gave olivia a chance to stand apart from being a swiftie to be her own artist. nonetheless, the déjà vu/cruel summer thing swept the paramore thing under the rug, and it raised Olivia’s peers not with newcomers, but with taylor and other seasoned artists.

Sabrina is good but not on the same level as Billie and Olivia. If you were to compare Sabrina to anyone, I think it should be smaller artists like Tate McRae, Gracie, or Laufey. Sabrina's genre is bubblegum pop, so perhaps a comparison to K-pop could be more fitting. Accusing you both of being haters and providing fake analyses between Sabrina and Olivia, where it's clear you stan Sabrina, is unfounded. so please stop talking about Olivia and focus on discussing Sabrina.

Just a correction on the cruel summer and deja vu discussion - the entire copyright discussion started with the guy from paramore asking for credits and then that started blowing up on tiktok, and people started finding other similarities - which was the cs bridge part. till then olivia had also mentioned cs as an influence for the bridge outright, so most probably to deal with the paramore suing and the whole criticism online made them want to pre-empt any such discussions/legal action and the teams reached out and discussed stuff. the part about ts and jack getting to know through the channels about the credits was actually said by jack himself. so yeah, paramore happened first, leading to this. other than that, interesting video on this.

I at least give credit to your discourse on the dejavu vs cruel summer issue, but it's obvious you didn't take the time to listen to Olivia herself. Olivia has NOT been avoiding interviews, she has done SO MANY during this GUTS era. You could've at least picked one of the major ones like Rolling Stone or Vogue and read that. You could've watched the numerous radio interviews she did. Remember there was a strike!?! But now that it's done, she's back to appearing on late night shows. You said you don't know how the overnight fame "messed her up"? She's talked about it several times in interviews and even sings about it in making the bed and teenage dream. At first, she literally didn't comprehend its magnitude. When driver's license hit #1 in the Billboard Hot 100, her producer told her "Olivia, you don't get it. Your life is different now." She had to switch off her social media and everything was filtered through her team. Her schedule was hectic af. Her first live performance was the BRIT awards, her SNL performance that people bashed her for was her 2nd. She cried in the dressing room, terrified. Also, if you watched the 1 "making dejavu video" they did you'd know that yes, deja vu was picked as a 2nd single waaay before driver's license was released. if you watched olivia's "driving home 2 u" documentary you'd also know that she hesitated releasing deja vu because of the narrative people will predictably impose on that song even though she never wrote in a hateful way and that she doesn't believe in pitting women against each other. Also, she chose Interscope/Geffen because they treated her as a songwriter first. She's said this in interviews. They didn't pander to her "star quality" but in her songwriting ability. That's why.

This was an interesting watch, would be quite cool if you both did "The Taylor Swift effect" talking about the impact she has done throughout her years. look, i've been watching some of your other videos and they're really good! but this one is.... erm. i get the point you guys were trying to make but it's rather clear that there was not enough research on olivia's music, rise to fame, performances and as a public figure outside of "gossip". there are a lot of funny and good moments on this video but after the ten minute mark the vibe gets kinda of mean spirited and includes a lot of fake narratives used to hate on olivia in 2021 and 2022

Some of this is misinformation. She was already signed before not by a couple months but by almost a whole year. They first started the video by saying she got signed after going viral and then later that she was signed a few months before and both are not entirely true. Deja vu did not start the drama between Joshua and Sabrina. In fact that drama is part of what made her and drivers license go viral in the first place. It was not mainly because of a TikTok drivers license went viral. Also calling a 16 year old a literal child is somewhat disrespectful too.

I didn’t discover Olivia from TikTok. I heard Drivers License on the radio while driving to work. I fell in love with this song and with Olivia. Now I have SOUR and GUTS on repeat everyday. I’m very thankful I found Olivia’s music. I love her and nothing can make me hate her. I had so much fun watching her concerts. It was an incredible experience. I can see the love she has for her fans. ❤And I hope she will drop another album soon. She’s one hell of a songwriter and performer 💗

so tired of the comparison between the two. olivia is a talented songwriter even before her “overnight” fame. she wrote a song that charted on billboard before dl. no matter how “talented” one is, sometimes it’s also a bit of timing and luck which she had. also she’s able to tap into other genres allowing her to diversify her audience. when older parents know about the artists their kids listen too, that means they’ve become a household name. olivia has that potential. sabrina on the other hand only caters to a certain demographic.

Some of the comments here aren't it! I truly don't think this video is biased at all. As a viewer I didn't feel as though you guys were calling Olivia a bad performer. It's true that people bashed her performances!! I saw it on my tl as did many people in my circle. She did become viral after Tiktok! People in their twenties that weren't watching Disney channel got to know her through there, it doesn't matter that she already had a fanbase from the show. She did become a household name after that Tiktok and she did get a ton of shit for that performance that started discourse on social media regarding her stage presence and live vocals. And Jack Antonoff (the producer on Cruel Summer) said he had no idea that they got credit on the song so it could’ve been done without their knowledge.

Thanks for mentioning how the demographics of an artist massively influence the appeal..that’s been demonstrated so many times. But particularly this phenomenon is intriguing to day the least. As for deja vu and cruel summer being similar, the whole fucking premise is reliant on the memory of Joshua.. cruel summer is just a recollection of events and “in retrospect” type message going on with it.
