I'm a Terminator fanboy but the thing that annoyed me about this movie is that it kept throwing member berries at me. I wanted it to be its own film but it felt like a nostalgia checklist. Something Jar Jar Abrams would do if he made it. They even threw Marcus in as an improvised machine guardian for John Connor. I don't hate it. I love it, but it still bugs me. (Also I would have made the T-800 completely keyframed instead of mocap if I were in charge. T-RIP looks too fluid and natural. It even walks with a slight hunch.)
The reason why this Film is now respected is because people now realize it’s not some soft reboot of the time line this film actually tried to be different
FocusFanatic I completely disagree, you get a big sense of dredd when John and his men are exploring the underground lab in the beginning of the film, you get a big sense of dredd in the final act in the Skynet base/factory, there's more I can think of as well. That's why the practical effects for the machines worked so well in the film, it's a nice combination that gives Salvation "dredd".
@FocusFanatic She wasn't the "face" of anything actually, Skynet took the appearance of her because of her connection to Marcus, it's for a deeper impact (hence why they also took the appearance of Kyle and John for a moment) to get Marcus to do his mission and stop resisting. I don't know where you're getting the "all machines looked CG" comment from either, everything from it has aged greatly and still looks more than solid enough for a decade old film.
It's always hilarious how in movies like 80% of the time sound designers miss one simple thing which makes A10 iconic while i don't recall a single video game what did it wrong
Because they cant relate to the main character. Like the hatred to "black panther" movie set in waukanda. That was wildly successful. I thought the "no kill" philosophy subtext to terminator 2 was stupid.....or SJW stupid. Watch terminator to watch things blow up or be killed. Esp as a teen. Most people can separate make believe from reality...no kill subtext was overkill.
Pretty cheezy, I laughed at the moto-terminators, and the aquatic ones were even worse. This is an average movie and not close to living up to the legacy.
Same I was shocked when he was able to easily chop through metal with an axe, then survive the Harvester bot smashing him into the ship and finally even tank being yeeted like that. I was like "wtf this guy is superhuman". Little did I know lol.
@@zippyparakeet1074 Man this movie is bad! No way a human can survive that! But then at the end I was like... holy cow. I am dumb, the writing is on point!
@@unyieldingrage1389 You are the fake fan, this movie is not as bad as people say... This one tried to show us the damm war at least... Instead of going back to the past and mess up with T1 and T2... This one doesn't even touch those movies... Can you say the same for T3, Genesys and Dark Fate????? They did shit on T1 and T2
Thank god John told them to take evasive maneuvers. Those pilots would have just flown in a straight line otherwise. This is why he is a master commander.
The pilots were going to take evasive maneuvers regardless if John told them to or not. He just said it because he’s worried about his men and women under his command. Since he is stuck there he can’t do anything about it. He’s feeling helpless and powerless and expresses that through his commands. The only thing he can do is tell them evasive maneuvers. Unlike other military officers, he has to worry about every man and women under his command, because they are finite, every soldier who dies under his command is one more closer to defeat and the extinction of humanity. He can not view them as expendable assets, he has to view them as an extension of himself, and every one person he loses that is a piece of himself that gets cut off. But he also has to be a strong leader and not get overwhelmed or distraught at their deaths otherwise he can’t lead the rest of his men and women to victory against an overwhelming force that is seemingly endless and bent on the total annihilation of the human race.
It's an interesting concept but I wish Salvation was about how John started the whole resistance thing. In this movie, the resistance seems already a well organized armed group and have the equipment they need to fight. It supposed to be John communicating from Crystal Peak and tell the survivors what really happened and help organize the first formation of the resistance and how he meet Barnes and Perry.
I love when sci-fi films abandon the "everything is humanoid" trope, especially for combat units. For a huge number of modern/near-future combat applications, the human form just sucks. It was only ever a thing because; a) a low-budget '80s film like T1 could hardly afford to do otherwise, and; b) because the Terminators were specifically designed as infiltrator units. It was sheer coincidence that the T-800 Model 101 also happened to meet the criteria for SkyNet's desperate hail-Mary time-travel gambit. Edge of Tomorrow also did a good job with that.
Come to the Skynet post apocaliptic future! We have: Infiltration units with rotten skins Hidden prototypes Snakes under water Giants robots who takes humans and goes Brrrr Auto pilot motorcycles Epic flying things that can destroy jets c:
This movie really drove home what Skynet was using in the war and that it wasnt just an army of what was basically a T-800 without skin that had a plasma rifle in the 40 Watt range. In this movie Skynet actually fielded such a nice variety of vehicles that all made really good sense, from the thrust-vectoring pursuit planes (nice throwback to T3 and T2) to the Moto-Terminators (because before you make a legged killing robot, you should always have a wheeled killing robot. Much simpler. Also weirdly remind me of Geth.) to the combo of Harvester and Transport craft working in a perfect tandem.
But at the same time made it realistic that the Moto-terminators could be defeated if you overwhelmed them with enough obstacles and could knock them off their wheels, hopefully causing them to crash into something with enough force to disable them. They’re not T-800s, they’re lightweight drones built for speed.
The audio work in this scene is enough to make the terminators so much more intimidating. Still one of my favourite terminator movies just for the atmosphere and sound design
Yeah there is a lot of practical effect in this movie making it look gorgeous. And even the CGI is great throughout except when Marcus' face is blown up and his eye is like photoshopped on top of his terminator side.
I still remember coming out of the movies and calling my brother and telling him how awesome this movie was. Never understood why it was trashed by critics and audiences.? This scene felt like it was out of this world to be honest.
In this scene alone: The two motor terminators had plenty of chance to disable the wrecker's tires, but they decided no and instead continue the chase for no reason. Similarly, HK-A can disable the wrecker at higher altitude, but somehow it decided to dive in for that "cool shot" and get rekted instead.
its like you see they shooting at somebody you care about, he is evasing ... but you still doing it inside your head ... evade evade evade ... Conor was just telling it loud
Ever lost your mind due to stress? Like that girl who couldn't name a woman for a dollar? They're probably trying to male sure the pilot doesn't get stuck in fear.
Compared to Genesys and Dark Fate, Salvation was James Cameron level when it comes to storytelling, character development, and the sheer terror that is shown with the multiple variations of Terminators. And it’s a great callback to what we saw in T3 with all of the Terminator models in Cyberdine. It shows that Skynet has been busy with their never ending line of Terminators and I love it.
This movie is not bad. Is not excellent either, but it fulfills its premise pretty well and solves its plot rather well. And its the only really different Terminator movie of all. I like this one tbh, is not better than Cameron's but works pretty good imo.
@@generalaccount6531 plasma rifles are worst idea for any movie ever. Laser beams and plasma beams Will never ever have a good effect in a movie compared to old gun bullet shoots.
@@generalaccount6531when people think about T1 and T2 no one think about plasma rifles when it comes to weapon. Everyone remebers epic minigun scene and sawed shotgun shooting. If they added scene or 2 and showes some plasma shooting that would be fine but to make it as main weaponry in Terminator movie is horible idea.
This movie is not bad. It's not excellent, either, but it fulfills its premise pretty well and solves its plot rather well, and it's the only really different Terminator movie of all. I like this one, to be honest, it's not better than Cameron's, but works pretty good (well) in my opinion.
well, from what I can tell as a mechanical engineering major the engine itself was fine but the hydraulics(?) were completely fucked so the thing could really only spin.
The action scenes could have been good but the explosions and crashing stuff is too overblown it seems just like a weak compensation for the lack of Plot and it makes the action scenes cartoonish anyway
I liked that this movie showed what happens after the nukes went off. I heard some people complained that the war was not being fought with plasma rifles, my understanding is that technology is continuously advancing most of the robots in the film are primitive versions of the flashbacks in terminator 1 and 2 if they had continued this movie we would have eventually gotten to that level of tech.
@@auradzrts691 It would have made a great reveal if THEY DIDN'T FUCKING SPOIL IT in the trailer. The viewer would have been like WTF until the movie explains it. They should have kept that a plot secret.
VampyreGothique nice list! Here’s mine: Terminator 1984 Terminator 2 Judgement Day Terminator 3 Rise of the Machines Terminator Salvation And Terminator Genysis I liked Dark Fate as a movie but to me it’s not canon.
I can't. Because no matter how you feel about this film, there's no denying that those evasive maneuvers at 0:43 is some of the most BADASS moves ever.
Good CG can be a bad thing if its the only redeeming factor in a movie. Frantic action scenes mean nothing if you dont care about the people or reasons for the conflict. That is why when I watch this I just say "That looks cool but its just an effect"
I never disliked that movie tbh. I never watch Terminator for extremely "good" story, i watch for its cool setting and characters. And this movie had both. I couldn't care less than some things are not as good as Terminator 2, it's the only terminator movie that showed how depressing and scary the future is when Skynet takes control. Some people are way too harsh on it. When you see how bad and incoherent the next movies were, that one looks like a masterpiece in comparison lol
@@ThoA45 There are lots of shitty movies but this one is esp. shitty because the story is so weak and the Action scenes try so desperately to mask that weakness. That is why people despise this movie above others
Got to respect this film's attempt at world-building and character development. Every other sequel since T2 is just repeating the same tired tropes with bigger, dumber action scenes.
TG look like a fanfiction. The T1K was supposed to be a threat to anyone even to Skynet. Also Bob is better than Pops. Wish Salvation was made into a trilogy with third movie showing the TDE.
I love the moto termiantor system analyzing and predicting its obstacles movements and hwo can it proceed should it stop or roll to avoid collison. The system so incredible.
I was on an 11 hour flight back from India a few years ago. I watched this film twice, and I've no desire to watch Genisys or Dark Fate once, that's how good it is.
I always wondered why they'd have these but it makes sense, since motorbikes are a lot more manuverable than regular vehicles allowing them to run down your typical car, and they can also do way more crazy shit like 0:43 to keep up with them. Also, we needed a terminator riding one of these. The choreography would've been crazy.
I like that the Harvester is smart enough to just smash Marcus once it realizes he keeps living through attacks by various Terminators. Clearly, it doesn't recognize he's "Skynet property", so to speak, so it decides he's not worth it as a test subject compared to the threat he poses and just tries to kill him.
I loved this movie... Darker and apocalyptic and different. Very well made too. If someone could replace Arnold as the main character, it was Christian Bale...A phenomenal actor. His action movies are just too good. It had a good storyline, acting, direction, terminators. What more did people want??
if they hadn't do the execution scene as the opening, it'll be great and adds to the mystery. The opening should be showing nukes flying and first machines. Have the audience thinking him having amnesia due to a battle and wandering aimlessly until he meets Kyle. That falling into the river scene should be made vague enough to fool the audience or have him ride on top of a HK aerial and the HK shake him down to fall into the river from believable heights. They should reveal him little by little.
finally a movie that shows us how threatning terminators can actually be, y'know BEING FUCKING BASICALLY PERFECTED MACHINES AND ALL, and not bumbling idiots. just the POV of how slowly terminators see the world around them (and can react perfectly), and then the crazy movement is exactly what i've wanted to see. 0:41
Notice that the reason Marcus caught Kyle (1:36) was because he had the gun in the way Marcus taught him the night they met, like he grabbed the gun, not his hand.
Always thought the machines in this film were super scary. Like, out of all of the Terminator films, excluding maybe Terminator 2, this one has the biggest sense of dread
I really love the gritty post-apocalyptic tone and feel of this film. Even though the film wasn't all that great to some people, I thought it was a good step in the right direction for the series. Sadly the films that followed were templates or soft reboots.
Growing up as a kid in the 2000s this was one series reboot I was waiting for the sequel on for years wondering why it never came about. Saw it in theaters with my parents when it first came out and loved it. Never understood why anyone hated it. To me, it did a good job. I always loved the trope of individual thinking they're human only to find out they're a terminator. It was new. Hell, I even liked how a Terminator, (Sam Worthington) fell in love with a human. That was new too. I was raised around lots of popular films of the past and then, present time growing up so, yeah. This, T1 and T2 are still my favorites. Growing up I liked T3 though as an adult I tend to look away at that film now.
If the writing was better and they focused more on the fighting in the future, this series of terminator movies could have been its own special series. The original two are good and this could have been wonderful.
I wished the following a Terminator film centered around Reese becoming a bad ass. Afterwards, a film to tie in going back in time would’ve made things come full circle.
The only 2 bad things about Salvation:- #1 Most of the movie takes place in broad daylight, whereas all of T1&T2's future scenes were shot at night. This is also the reason why they didn't have lasers in Salvation, lasers in daylight wouldn't look as good. #2 IT HAS... NO STORY... okay it looks like it has a story but it doesn't! Characters just jump from random action scene to the next random action scene. No wonder why some people hate Salvation. Other than that, everything else is great. The DieselPunk aesthetics of the machines are awesome, the Practical Effects on Terminators look amazing and the actors of kyle&john are great. Salvation >>>>> Dark Shit anyday.
We are in 2018 at the beginning of the resistance & the technologies developped by skynet did have not reach their maximum yet. This was supposed to be a trilogy, so you can easily think the 2nd episode was going to be darker and with more advanced technologies.
@@jomo3564 THANK YOU. People fail to realize that they had pushed Skynet so far in time and the war was just starting. That's the reason they sill rely on metal bullets.
It did have night scenes. When the pilot and Marcus are travelling towards the base. Marcus trying to escape, Connor going to Skynate base, Connor trying out their new "secret" weapon.... Did you even watch the movie?
@@saulloll8547But still, majority of the movie and its climactic scenes still take place in the daylight. It effects the movie's tone a bit. In an interview JC mentioned that he extended the shooting time of T1 just to make sure to shoot most of its scenes at night because they gave the movie more of a horror vibe.
The feeling of the original terminator future war wasn't there either, that one was bleak almost hopeless struggle humanity had no army no resistance fighters until Conner taught people (civilians) how to smash the machines this has been totally lost now with the new film.
For years this has been the scene that I use to demo my Definitive Technology home theater system for family & friends. It never fails to leave them wide-eyed & mouth wide opened 🔊😮

I like how that someone actually thought through about what type of air power they would need in a world where you can’t design anything new. The fabulous tank busting A-10
I always questioned why Skynet chose the motorbike as a weapon systems. It’s dangerous for humans but with an intelligent AI system it can perform to its full potential. It’s a fast and nimble weapons system that can deliver deadly firepower when “chasing” humans.
