I have a tiny yard. I have used old filing cabinets, on their backs with drainage holes drilled in, then up on bricks. I have 7 four drawer and a couple of 2 draw ones that run right around the edge of the yard to leave a space in the middle for somewhere to sit. I filled them like this and my window ledges are full of veg seedlings ready to go in. Beans, courgettes, squashes, nasturtiums etc. I also have 4 dwarf rootstock fruit trees in the cabinets too. Next, it will be growing some mushrooms in the mulch. My first full summer in this yarden so looking forward to seeing how productive it can be.

Dio mio! Wild animals on the allotment! I live in the woods, so I have hungry groundhogs and deer. I do understand. Perfect timing for me to discover this video, as I’m starting two new raised beds. I’ve saved good cardboard, suspecting it would be useful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I lived in Rome and later, Assisi for quite some time. The fresh, seasonal vegetables were a flight to heaven. I’ll always trust an Italian gardener-you. Grazie tante!

Here's a tip to scare off the birds: Crows are pretty smart and will figure out that a scarecrow ist actually real. A great alternative is to buy prey bird decoys that are attatched to a stick that fly around in the wind. These decoys are a lot more effective at scaring of birds and are preffered by farmers.

If y'all use this method keep in mind that you'll have to fill or top off these beds continuously due to the materials breaking down over time, it basically just spreads out the cost because eventually you will have filled it with soil. It will settle quite a bit for the first few seasons and then slow down a bit just keep in mind that you will need to add more soil year after year 👍👍
@oldbear6813
@oldbear6813 Год назад
@@Tao_Tology The problem is they don't actually make much compost so the soil content will continue to drop 🤦‍♀️. The system is a good system but people need to be prepared for what ACTUALLY happens, apologies if that offends you 🤷‍♀️

Sorry, just cannot see the point of those raised beds, except for gardeners in wheelchairs, or people gardening in a swamp. The cost and environmental impact of all that colourbond steel is out of all proportion to the returns received. The practice of burying big logs and then having to add huge amounts of soil and compost on top to grow in, seems crazy to me. All that heavy work and expense, when you can plant into soil and compost at ground level! Raised beds and hugelculture in such small containers, greatly increase the drainage which means having to water plants daily for months. The metal sides heat up in summer and get frigid in winter, damaging plant roots. The soil at the sides dries out and pulls away leaving big air gaps, or freezes. God created the earth, and the first thing he did for the people he made from it, was to plant a garden in the soil. Gardening best practice. Use the soil! The earth is full of it.
@SpicyMoustache
@SpicyMoustache Год назад
This is a great option for people gardening on concrete, terraces, etc. my whole backyard is on concrete. Also, you will defo not spend a lot of money to fill them up. Hugelkutur retains moisture, helping you to water less. The metal doesn’t over heat or gets cold at all and having raised beds it’s the perfect way to be in full control of your garden regulating what goes inside in case your ground has polluted soil (they work even in open ground). Not everyone has soil and land like you said and it’s good to give people options.
@rubygray7749
@rubygray7749 Год назад
@@SpicyMoustache Yes, those things are certainly true. Probably more true in your milder climate than in Australia, where it has become a real fad for people to think that starting a garden means they have to spend money on these metal beds, even when they have perfectly good soil to start with. And here, I certainly have seen the problems with soils drying out fast and pulling away from the sides of raised beds, because our summers can be so hot with no rain for several months. Then watering every day is necessary, which becomes very expensive, and often there are water bans where watering is not permitted. So in your situation at home, of course you need to use raised beds, and it is just wonderful to see how much you achieve in a difficult environment. But I think novice gardeners may not understand how to determine the best option for their situation, and if money is very tight, the idea that buying commercial raised beds is essential, might be the nail in the coffin for their plans and dreams. I hope you also show how to start garden beds in the soil, now that you have that lovely allotment, so people understand the possibilities.
