In this video we explore how to extract the natural pigments (colours) from plants using simple solvent extraction techniques.
If you would like to follow along with the experiment you will need:
Some plant materials,
Glass containers (two for each different plant type),
Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol, propan-2-ol),
Something to stir with e.g. skewer, chopstick or teaspoon,
Something to protect eyes e.g. lab specs, goggles, glasses.
My apologies, at 4:28 I said 12 test-tubes when I meant to say 6 test-tubes.
Thank you for watching.

What can you do with these different colors you've extracted? Do you think you'd be able to use them for something like tie dye? Great video by the way 👌

Firstly, my apologies for such a delay in responding. The extracted dyes are quite weak and could be used as paints for layering. However, if you gathered a greater quantity of the flowers you could use it as a dye. If you want to try this have a look at madder (plant) root which has a very strong dye for this purpose. Hope that is useful :)

Can you use this mixture to make paint?

Thank you so much for your question. Yes, but you would want to use more material to get a more concentrated extract otherwise the colour would be very pale. These extracts can be really nice as water colours.
