Update - 2018. : chess forum is still open on Thompson street in the West village. As for parks .. games can be found at Washington square and union square park , but my personal favorite spot is Bryant Park at 41st. At Bryant Park there are tables for beginner , intermediate and masters , also local GM’s tend to stop by from time to time.
Your Move Chess and Games, the store that runs the ChessUSA web store is way better. Or if you wanna actually play go to the Marshall chess club. Way nicer, much better players.

I LOVE visiting that strip of the city to play some chess. When I was in college, I used to walk to that shop about 5 times a week to play -- at all sorts of hours!! It's places like that make me feel so luck to be living in New York.... Snap! I may go there this weekend to play -- who's up for a game???
@ellamorton you are absolutely lovely. And the charm you spread is just reflected on how you make the persons you interview so at ease. Your videos spice up the day. Keep up the spice :-) ~peace
This is a great place for chessers to play, hang out, or just visit. I was surprised that there was no mention of the Chess Forum (down the block). More so that no mention was made of the shop's predecessor: Rossolimo Chess Studio, a fixture of Greenwich Village for decades, operated by the great GM Rossolimo, and later by his widow. Again, no mention of the fabled Manhattan Chess Club, nor of Brooklyn's Hawthorne Chess Club, run by John "Jack" Collins, where he coached young Bobby Fischer.
@vrfl No, my point is this: When you play WoW for 40 hours, you are grinding to get more powerful. It's a virtual equivalent of running the rat race. In Chess or Go, you might take 40 hours or 40 minutes to finish off one battle (which is one game), but you are still only as weak or as powerful as the only weapon you are allowed to use: your mind. That is why games like Chess and Go are deeply respected. And that is my two cents.
Great topic choice. Fun report. Ella and Rocketboom rock, as ever. Even managing to make New York City look pretty good, to the surprise of this Bostonian.
@GmasterRED This lady does not replace Molly. Ellie, Ella, and Molly all do different shows. ROCKETBOOM is more of an online tv channel than a specific show.
I taught my niece the basic rules of chess when she was two, her mum found out when she took her to the bank and she saw a picture of a Bishop and my niece proceeded to recount exactly how the game went & in order which pieces where taken. Apparently the public reaction embarrassed my sister so she left without completing her transaction. She was brilliant then, but now she's almost a normal teenager only interested in facebook and games. Though she is on a full scholarship at a private school.
The good thing is that since Deep Blue, cheess now are for humans no matter skin colour (black, white, pink, yellow, red, blue, green...). Nice video Ella, nice soundtrack, keep the good job.
The State needs to re-examine its current curriculum standards if it hopes to promote the higher level social, intrapersonal, and academic skills it so very much wants its students to embrace and achieve, especially students that are At-Risk. This would be about 2/3 of the student population. What to do?
@ellamorton Today I daydreamed that I played Bobby Fisher over the internet 2006 or so. I wish. Did you get an award for being the best female redheaded chessplayer?
This dude that appears three times in this video tutored me and smoked me out one day when it was pretty empty. I swear, he's such a nice guy and made a huge deal about me giving him three bucks.... This Mother approached our table, took a flick, and he absolutely flipped out on her. I got weirded out and left.
@utubegod35 I tend to get very involved in the subjects I'm reporting on. Sometimes this results in eyebrow movement. I find the Botoxy alternative a bit too staid, personally.
