How does a country with enough homes to house 2 billion people and a population of 1 billion, still have such a homeless problem?

Turns out that encouraging everyone from rural areas to flock to cities and become knowledge workers and having an economy that revolves around a huge property bubble isn’t a great idea!

It's easy to overlook the struggles of individuals when discussing global economies. I agree that there's so much beneath the surface that the world needs to see.

Lets be real for a moment. The homeless (men) in America rarely receive anything but hatred from anyone not also in that predicament.

I met some of these people in Thailand after COVID. There was a small group of Chinese who kept to themselves at our hostel. One day I overheard them in Chinese repeatedly talking about my country Mexico which got me to talk with them. They were quite happy to learn I could speak Chinese but more excited to learn I was from Mexico. They started asking me a bunch of questions about crossing the border into the US to which I bluntly told them I had no idea about and discouraged it. I asked where they got these crazy ideas from and they said that people were posting videos and tutorials of how to cross into the US online. The Chinese government hard handed approach to COVID was what made them leave. They wanted to go both for the freedom and economic benefits but they had a very naive and overly optimistic view of the US. They saw the high wages US workers were making but had no idea as to the incredibly high living costs associated with living there. I tried explaining that there was a housing shortage and that their expectations for life in the US would set them for disappointment but they either didn't believe me or brushed off my criticism. I also tried encouraging them to go to German or Australia instead (places which I feel would be better and easier for them to enter) but they seemed dead set on just going to the US. Unfortunately I don't know where they are now as Wechat is blindly and constantly blocking and deleting accounts in SE Asia without reason.........................

The family dynamics are not different at all tbh. This really explains why my Chinese relatives are so obsessed with keeping a perfect image at the cost of emotional and psychological well being

The factories that sprang up like weeds from foreign investment lifted a ton of people out of poverty, (often to the detriment to the middle class in europe and north america) It is sad that the money was sucked up into too few of people's pockets; and often sent with business owner's kids to foreign countries to go to university and buy homes... If the Chinese middle class was able to grow and flourish then China would have a more self sufficient economy with greater local consumption, so that even in this time when factories are moving to cheaper countries like in South East Asia the Chinese economy could be sustainable. I hope the chinese people see a bright future, they have come very far in just a few short decades.

While I’m sure prostitution has always been a major problem. The amount of YOUNG women who are so disenfranchised to have to resort to this, or sold into sex slavery. I pray those women find a way to sustain themselves

Here's what he did: - He renounced ancient chinese culture, including Confucius and Buddhism, which value kindness and tolerance. - He eliminated all intellectuals, land owners, rich and famous people. - He also told the youth to condemn their parents and neighbors publicly, usually in front of a crowd. - What he had left were uneducated laborers, poor peasants and mean youths. Those are the ancestors of the current mainland chinese today.

My dad went to China for business before, he said it was heartbreaking. They try to show only the polished but he saw some of the worst as well due to a business friend. Very very sad.

You people from first world countries don't know how blessed you are. I have experienced those levels of poverty in real life back in Brazil. Thankfully it was never my home, but still I did not feel good for my friends who lived like that...

I find it telling that they would parade those women to publicly shame them, yet I didn't see any of their customers getting the same treatment; probably because the police make up a large portion of their customer base.

As a Chinese, I have to say that most of these issues do exist, but since we have propaganda, why are you not? Any country has its own good and bad side, you should not have a good opinion of it just because of its advantages

I mean in america we do get some of that, but there is a clear red/blue split but obviously the biggest difference is there are ways to hear dissenting view points. often not through legacy media though or at least not in any kind of in depth meaningful way.

It happened before. During the 90s when the inefficiently run state owned factories started closing down, it caused massive lay offs in the North-Eastern parts of China. Husbands ferry their wives to 'work' after dark then went to pick them up for home when the night's work finishes.

I worked there for a year as a Commercial Pilot. It was tragic and heartbreaking what I saw. i could not believe it.

During COVID more than 4 million small and medium enterprises failed and were permanently shut down. As a result, more than 300 million people lost their jobs. The rate of closures was so bad that the government refused to process the paperwork filed by owners to formally cease operations.

This is extremely similar to what happened in Venezuela as the bottom fell out of their economy.

My father visited China in 1968 during Mao's repressions.This idiot Mao destroyed a mired of National Chinese Temples, historic buildings, Palaces that every region in China had, literary obliterating the history of Great China. People there went through unimaginable suffering during the WW1+ WW2 -nobody talks about that. China was "sold" to the Communist regime, it's aristocracy obliterated, history destroyed, people were rushed into communal living, had to march to work in the fields & factories. My father documented all that on a photo camera but it was destroyed by the Chinese authorities at the border. All my dad did was a journal in Bulgarian language describing what he saw in his business travel (he was a representative of BG fork lift industry & was helping to build a Chinese forklifts factory there). Bulgaria at this time was a Communist country & only tech support from SSSR and Bulgaria were allowed to enter China back then, it was a closed country.

I lived in China in the early 1990s and the people I met over there were gold and amazing human beings. I went back to China all throughout the 2000s and the trend that I noticed is that when the economy kept booming, larger and larger the people became worse.and my point is the worship of money always leads to human destruction, especially at a spiritual level

When I was in Hong Kong in 2010, it was $60 US. I was there for 5 days and spent $300. Good times, good times.

I have friends in China and they tell me the economy is absolutely imploding. Things are getting bad quickly.

I lived and worked in China and Asia over ten years ago and business was booming. Look up and Shanghai was indeed impressive, look down and the streets were filthy, full of the poor and when it rained a black soot covered everything. At night, begging and prostitution made walking through the streets a nightmare. I was very happy when I transferred out of China and I am not surprised by this video.

I am Chinese and in China NOW. I live in an ordinary city in Henan, central China. I testify that the situation here is worsening, economically and politically, at a speed I've never experienced. Many people lost their jobs, though I cannot give you numbers, but I can clearly feel it. A large portion of local factories and companies, including the one I worked for, have been and still are cutting down employee benefits since the midst of the pandemic. And if you walk around it's definitely not difficult to find shops and even entire malls that used to be popular and crowded are now closed. Another aspect, that communist ideology and mentality seep into people‘s minds in an all-round way. The education system, press, television, social media, and short video platforms, there is almost no escape. Growing up in a relatively relaxed political environment under the administration of Hu and Wen, I used to be believing that China was on the right track to democracy and rule of law, just like Taiwan did, and I was being part of it. But now, proved to be dreams, not real. Since the pandemic, I have been tormented by depression. I find it difficult to see goodness, and easily to be trapped in desperation to find back the not-too-good but hopeful days. Noticing the rights and freedoms in aspects of life are taken away day by day, little by little, yet people around me, friends, families, and even my parents don't share the same thoughts, they only listen to you talking about it at best. My mother always tells me, whenever I mention these subjects, not to speak about them in public or in front of strangers or in the workplace. I see this place of no hope. Maybe I'm a coward and am weak, I’m getting tired of struggling.

I don't know why, but my wedding trip was... Shanghai. That was a pure nightmare. Our flights back were cancelled, without noticed because some fat Chinese guy was paying 5k yuans per passport, for "his" friends to be boarded instead of us. And it was pinned on US, "foreigners". Took us 3 weeks to be able to get back to France safely. Thankfully we had true Chinese friends... Otherwise we would have been left stranded. We had to pull strings, ask local friends to help us out. What I've learned is that people in the big cities are corrupted AF. People in mainland, as well as in Beijing, were SO sweet...

Not sure if you've been on X = Twitter, Facebook, or any of the other social media sites guy. But they do censor, harass and cancel here in America.

This video clearly exhibits strong bias, selectively choosing materials that highlight the negative aspects while omitting the positive ones. The real situation is not like this. As modern individuals, we need to maintain independent thinking and cognitive abilities. We should not be swayed by the ulterior motives of such media personnel, but instead should seek out the truth ourselves.

The people that should be parading are the politicians that failed those women.

I was disappeared from a job that I had for years and denied unemployment for refusing the jab. I believe a lot of people in China have it a lot worse than I, but I also believe a lot of politicians in America are aspiring to achieve the kind of government China has.

It's called "The oldest profession" for a reason, mate. It's what people turn to when there are no other marketable skills to be offered, or the market is oversaturated with the skillsets people possess.

As an Aussie, 40 years ago when I spent 2 years at a kung fu school, the thing that disturbed me the most is how the Chinese dare not challenge authority. The other surprise was when the sifu (kung fu master) learned I was a university educated electrical engineer, was the look of utter disdain on his face, as he realised I would be self sufficient, critical thinking, and immune to any attempts of manipulation.

I went to India for business. Mumbai. You have the ultra rich and then the very poor. Small children, homeless, no parents. Surviving... The contrast is just sickening. Pollution... Then you see very expensive cars and literally a few blocks further people, children, who have absolutely nothing. Just struggling to survive. Every day, countless homeless people die, including children. Heartbreaking.

i've literally seen this in japan and korea too this is not exclusive to china not trying to defend china but if your using prostitution as an indicator of a failing economy i guess all of the world is failing because i see this in every country i visit🤣 🤣🤣🤣

This time I must make an exception. Notwithstanding your perfect candour, it is very clear how much this "stuff" matters to you. It is very clear that you have a deep, genuine compassion for these guys, and how the obscenities of the CCP move you to continue to educate the rest of us lucky ones and give voice to the Chinese who the CCP would rather just went the fcuk away after exacting every last harvest they can. Your work, the reasons you do it, and the results I hope it achieves are truly commendable. I know some of what you have to see sticks right in your craw, but keep going. It matters.

About a decade ago... a friend who was a farmer from Nebraska was on a humanitarian mission to teach Chinese better farming skills. He said the farmer he worked with had made himself a home by digging a cave into the dirt on a hillside. They had no equipment to work with. But they're expected to produce so much.

Winston. I saw all of this first hand in 1994. I went to China thru Hong Kong in March of 94. I traveled from there using their railways going North West. 3 weeks and saw it all. The good the bad and the ugly. Saw loads of people and kids eating the trash thrown out the trains Dining Car. Was incredible to see.

My friend lost his job as a programmer, it's hard to find a new one, the economy is really bad 😞

What I always find very sad is that these governments don't appear to focus on the real basic stuff like sanitation, clean water, universal availability of reliable electricity, telephones and data comms, basic universal health care and education. If they focused on these things then the country would flourish. Instead they too often focus on the vanity projects, a flash tower block or having a nuclear weapon, I guess a new water treatment plant isn't so showy.

China's economy is a bit slow but definately not that bad. The slow down is caused by the end of property market growth as they decided to poke the bubble. Lived in China in 1990S and 2000S, a poor and wild society back then. Now the society has walked into a zero crime society. This is best era of China.

I'm often in China ... all my friends there are very concerned about the economy there. You are right in your analysis.

I lived in China 2006 to 2007 and the "streets with special services" were widely known. There is a kind of hierarchy in the Chinese society and as long as there is someone below you whom you can mistreat and exploit, the upper folks down rebel bit take part of it. There is no idea like humanity or Christianity. You care about your friends and your family, but everyone else is irrelevant. Or like a colleague said: "There are so many of us, why taking care of the weakest, they slow us all down."

Another problem is as a citizen of china, you aren't allowed to own land, but you can own the property residing on the land (for up to 70 years lease). Families pool their money together and buy in the USA. This has had a profound effect on the housing market in the USA. New construction properties in NY are being bought out before even breaking ground, tiny 2-bedroom condos selling for 1million+, etc.

I feel sad for those ladies. No one should have to do that to survive.

India and Indians are realists. We know our poverty and our issues. We fight over them all the time. Our politics is noisy. We have demonstrations, protests and a strong civil society. The courts routinely trash a lot of laws as unconstitutional (recently, the electoral bonds were declared so). Politicians are corrupt, but they don't go scot free exactly. Jayalalitha is an example. Opposition comes to power and makes sure the police go after their opponents. Jingoism is combined with realism. We are perennially unhappy with government and routinely vote them out and change governments. We have all the problems, but they are not swept under the rug. Everything is open to everyone to see and talk about. We may not be as rich as China, but we are an open society. THe only democracy in a poor country where the per capita is less than 2000 USD.

I have spoken to two Chinese living in the west who have just, independently, visited China for several weeks each. Both told me similar things - that the situation in first and second tier cities seems fairly normal on the surface, with the exception of the restaurants and shops being mostly empty. However both also told me that their friends and business connections were all planning to move to other countries due to the political/economic situation.

The difference between homelessness in the US and China is that in the US it is almost exclusively tied to drugs and/or mental illness. Most choose to be on the streets. There are plenty of shelters, but the shelters might make you work a few hours and/or attend a sermon, counseling, or drug rehab every day and they won't let you take drugs. So they live on the streets instead and tend to stick to areas with better weather if they can. China most are homeless because they have no choice. There are no shelters. This is typically not caused by drugs or mental illness, but by the lack of jobs and no government assistance.

years ago I seen poverty in the Phillipines and it was then my eyes were opened. honestly they had little yet very nice people, yet difficult to trust.. I understand their lives are not as lucky as others. this is so wrong having rich, middle class and poor.. theres no unity because the first point of call is the government, the police being corrupt. people are pushed to do things that they dont want to do.. and even being middle class, theres no way to get rich unless your ripping people off.. we all are one and its not fair that we cannot sustain this because of corruption.. some people dont even have clean water to drink, its insane, yet we have a train that speeds so fast and this train would have fed millions, whats wrong with a normal train and use the left over money to fed your people? its never the government that helps but the village of people, the volunteers, the ones that support soup kitchens to feed the homeless..
