You see it like that because Evan presented it like that... I didn't. I come from similar "multi-culturally fucked up" place. Essentially good people with a mindset that any small difference between them and their neighbor is the most important thing in the world, worth killing and dying over. People who have no education, prosperity, health, peace or happiness. Just pride, blood soaked history and more pride on top. I will take that worthless thing we universally despise and leave it to the hyenas. Even though i could get money for it - that i don't have, buy things for my kids - that they never had, i won't. And i will not let anyone else do it! If those guys were white they could be my family....

@antwain clarke is what china's state-regulated reincarnation for the Dalai Lama and the Uighurs forcible "education" into non-Muslims not imperialism? give my a break! china is just as bad as the rest of the major world powers. the only difference being this is the time where they are just gaining power, and people won't be able to see the full extent of their tyranny until decades later in retrospect after the results of their actions have come into full effect. When china comes through with their goal of achieving unity it will not be through creating mutual respect for each other's differences but by forcing people to give up who they are so they can match the majority, just like Rome and Britain.

Speaking of farm animal sex and economics it reminds me with an exchange John Kenneth Galbraith had in the halcyon days of his youth. He and a young lass were walking through the fields around his parents farm in semi-rural Canada. Both of them see a bull mounting a cow. He says, "I think it would be nice to do that one day." She says, "Well, it's your cow."

That's happens when investment comes pretending it doesn't have downsides - at least, they change the balance of power, and the traditional landscape. For that reason, it is important to create a minimum consensus for those changes and all of their consequences. Hiding the potentially harmful ones might make it easy to get a project approved at first, but it is a certain recipe for future disillusion and resistence.
@ChairmanJMao
@ChairmanJMao 5 лет назад
I'm not sure you can characterize the Chinese as hiding some downsides from the natives. A more accurate picture would be a lack of respect for the downsides argued for by the locals. That sounds rough, but think about it if you were in their shoes. Let's say you want to start an shoe factory in a small town. You know it'll make everyone's lives better, give them jobs and resources and revitalize the area, bringing in infrastructure like schools and hospitals where there once was none. But as you start drawing up the plans, some townsperson approaches you and says "sorry you cant do that, making shoes will anger the Lord, so you cant do that." Its something you never considered as part of your calculations. You ask why, and they shrug and say "because". You try and figure out if they have some rational underlying reasoning, and it doesn't seem to be. Indeed it doesn't really seem to be central to the message of their religion anyways. Taken together, you figure it might rustle some feathers, but since you know that it'll objectively improve everyone's lives in the area, you figure most people will be willing to look the other way. So you build the factory, and somehow it blows up. Part of it is clearly racism. The natives dont like people of your race, something you hear on the streets all the time. Rats. Flies. Leeches. You have no idea how large a part of it is. But you know that if you just let the factory run for a while, the benefits people just cant see will start to manifest, and maybe they'll understand. Once clean water and jobs and hospitals and schools start being built, people will come over. So you keep pushing on regardless. Within a year its shut down. And the natives celebrate their victory, and go back to living in horrible, absolute poverty.
@FOLIPE
@FOLIPE 5 лет назад
@@ChairmanJMao I'm not arguing the Chinese are doing that, I'm talking about the narrative on globalization and foreign investments overall in the whole world (my main concern being Latin America, to be honest). But just to be accurate, I disagree with your picture that the downsides of this whole process are imaginated or not as important as the gains, or that they are only or indeed even mostly symbolic - in fact, that depends a lot on the situation and how it works out, and absolute losses often follow the more obvious symbolic and relative ones. That's why I'm saying the most important thing is to be open from the start on all the consequences that those investments have on the local people so they can either back those ventures wholeheartedly or simply not approve of them - which, given its their country, it's also their right. With those sorts of international billion-dollars schemes, I'm sure you know, there are no saints and the investors aren't in this game to improve people's lifes' anyway so if the locals don't like it, they really should let them be. On the issue of racism, though, I'm not going to discuss it because I don't think that's a major problem with those multinational investments. Mostly because the outsiders are usually the ones with power and money. If anything, some sort of structural subordination of Africa is reproduced by those relations. Besides, maybe if those relations and their consequences had been more openly discussed from the beginning, not so much tension would have risen now... Who knows?
@duende29
@duende29 5 лет назад
@@ChairmanJMao 1. It's a slaughterhouse where the local population can't work because of cultural issues. And the jobs the locals would get there are probably the minimum wage no-benefits kind of job, where you'd make more than herding goats but you'd still live like shit in some slum. Besides, donkeys are not goddamn shoes, they're living, feeling and even intelligent animals and the Ethiopians might not eat them but they care for them. You'd think if people from Yulin came to your place and greased some local official's hand to set up a Dog slaughterhouse your people would be ok with that and let it be because some of the residents might get jobs cleaning floors? 2. What makes you think that if an investor's first thought is to use corruption to get their way they'd bring any "benefits to the community"? They're there to slaughter donkeys, package them, ship them and make money, nothing else. Infrastructure is very expensive and would eat from the profits.
@ChairmanJMao
@ChairmanJMao 5 лет назад
@@duende29 sure. So the beauty of capitalism is that the intentions of the stockbrokers dont have to be altruistic in order to create positive externalities. The butcher, the Baker, and the candlestick maker aren't selling you stuff out of the goodness of their hearts, but by their selfish actions good comes about anyways. I think you underestimate the benefits of these jobs on a community because your life would not be improved by such a job, or have experienced what happens to a community when such a job doesn't exist. I've been to small towns in the US. Unlike the cities, often times they were built around a single factory, something that really wasn't prestigious or impressive, but when the factory shut down the town hollowed out. The stuff the people had taken for granted, the schools, the hospitals, the infrastructure, all melted away, because it just wasn't possible to keep them open. The only difference here is that Ethiopia has a chance to go the opposite direction. From hollowed out to thriving. Beyond this, I'd like to point out the reason why building a dog killing factory would be different is the trade off isn't having my child die from a preventable disease because I dont have a hospital, and having my children grow up uneducated and doomed to poverty and a future of unskilled labor, as the alternative. I have a comfortable life and a bright future regardless of the factory opening. These Ethiopians dont, and to equate the moral calculus involved for the two is wrong

Ethiopians don’t hate nobody in fact Ethiopians appreciate the Chinese ppl effort to build infrastructure in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 the problem was the cultural differences between China vs Ethiopia is huge Ethiopia is a Christian country they live by the book but the Chinese don’t have religion, so when it comes to food Chinese eats almost anything but Ethiopians are picky according to bible. Ethiopians Never hate Chinese.

Man, the Chinese thought that their money would beat RELIGION? Talk about high hopes.
@arfnore

No, they thought they could bribe the Govt in Ethiopia to use the military to protect China's interests! Ever since Tienanmen square, the Chinese automatic reaction to opposition is force. That's all they know, look at Hong Kong, people just want the rule of law, China pays hired thugs to beat up protestors!
@arfnore
@arfnore 4 года назад
@Stalin Steel I think you should get back to your noodles in the chinese troll factory canteen! Like I said, look at Hong Kong today! All China knows is force when its met with opposition! Look at Tibet or the concentration camps in Xinjiang. If China treats ITS OWN PEOPLE in such a barbaric way, how can you expect other people in the world to see you as anything other an absolute threat! I mean, the last country to have mass population concentration camps, like the ones China has, was nazi Germany, and look where that ended up!

@@arfnore China is doing what every country would do. Look at Spain and Catalonia. Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Every country would fight to protect their borders and national pride. The cheek of you western chauvinist pig to make such a statement

China doing something mutually beneficial. Gtfo. It is simply wanting to make something cheap and sell it for a massive profit, most of which these countries will never see. They will poison the earth for profit and are already on the road to ruining their own country. Thankfully the rest of the world do know how to say no when they should. And as for Hong Kong, they should throw out the Chinese dictatorship and become their own country. And if that happens they will get support from the rest of the world. So stop supporting money centred fascists and support a free world where we can actually help each other by not putting money first.

@@user-yv2cz8oj1k china invests in Africa because they profit. Isn't that what investment is. It's also mutually beneficial and China can make allies with countries in Africa which USA just conveniently forgot

Donkey Skin is traditional medicine though. Its popularity in the country did rise in the 2010s, but the presentation of the video made it seem like it just started there.
