The Cirrus SR20 was first introduced in 1999 and true it was the first of its kind. Cirrus aircraft are well known for the safety parachute system, which comes standard in all of their airplanes. Well, this was the very first general aviation aircraft to offer that safety feature as a standard equipment. Before Cirrus, no other airplane manufacturer had commercialized parachutes for airplanes. more specifically General Aviation airplanes.
The year model shown the video is a 2010 Cirrus SR20. This is the 3rd generation, which began production in 2008. This model is also equipped with a Garmin G1000 Avionics package. Very capably avionics with great features you won’t find even in some airliners. Cirrus prides themselves in building luxuries aircraft where the customer rolls in style and comfort. this SR20 is no different. In the very spacious cabin you will find an all leather interior with all padded surfaces. Another comfort equipment you’ll find in the SR20 and many others is an AC unit. You don’t get that too often in GA.
The Cirrus SR20 G3 is equipped with a continental IO-360 200HP engine. Speeds are moderate at 140 knots and you have a range of over 600 miles. Below are more specs for the SR20.
Engine: IO 360 200HP
Useful load: 970 LBS
Speed: 160 MPH
Range: 721 MILES
Price: $250K - $350K

Mike - enjoy the videos. The piece you missed in this in my opinion is the real reason the SR20 is underrated, and the reason they were crushed by their big brother the 22...the weight and balance. Most SR20s have a max useful load of about 840 lbs before you add that A/c which subtracts about 50lbs. Once you add 330 lbs of gas and a 200lb pilot, you only have 260 pounds for pax and luggage combined. They are pretty, have cool avionics, and look like a BMW inside, but you had better have tiny buddies, no luggage, or REALLY short flights planned. Compare to an older 182, and its 1200lb useful, there is no comparison unless you really are just looking for a 2 seater. Best

@droge192
@droge192 3 года назад
This is the main negative with Mike's videos. There is no faulting his enthusiasm and passion, but he adds so much hyperbole and too many superlatives. Example in this video: "The lights in a Cirrus are ALL LED.... for the most part". That makes no sense. They're either all LED or they're not. And if you don't know, that's fine but don't make it up! There are so many technical inaccuracies in these video, where he clearly doesn't know the facts and just makes something up.

I was surprised at the reasonable pricing on some of these 2006 models. Granted, some have higher hours below $180k price. Fuel and maintenance higher, but it’s a big powerful 4 seater. I was considering a build but my mission is occasional cross country so not too concerned about fuel. A used SR20 is worth considering.
@branislavbabic4579
@branislavbabic4579 4 года назад
But how much is C172 same year and state?
@johnsoswartsenager6100
@johnsoswartsenager6100 4 года назад
Branislav Babic More money, anywhere from $35k to $80k depending on the avionics. A used Cirrus is just another option over a build that I had not considered. A way to get into a more modern plane with more room, without the build. There are many other things to consider than just talking price. All the used planes I had thought about I wasn’t willing to sink that much cash in. $200k was my limit for an IFR capable newer plane. A cirrus has to depreciate in value more than a metal plane, it may not make sense for some.
@CyrilDeretz
@CyrilDeretz 4 года назад
My first airplane and I still love it. Economic, fast. We can load it with luggage and fly 500NM with my wife. I'm a big guy so this is perfect for my size too. Thanks Mike, couldn't agree more that it is underrated as I would never have believed I could afford a Cirrus but my SR20 G2 made it possible. This on is G3 with Perspective so possibly a touch higher in terms of price but it still remains in the same range as an M20J Mooney in terms of price with more room and probably as fast
@Dudeisthere
@Dudeisthere 4 года назад
Is a Cirrus much more expensive to maintain than lets say a Cessna 172/182 in your experience?
@CyrilDeretz
@CyrilDeretz 4 года назад
I can't really compare but the only additional maintenance cost is the parachute that's needs to be repacked every 10 year or so. Engine is a Conti, slightly more expensive than a Lyco to maintain, mainly because of the 6 cylinders.

@@CyrilDeretz Thanks for the insight, im almost done with my PPL and looking for ways to continue flying. Some low time (1000 hrs) SR20 G3s here are 150k which isnt too bad all things considered, especially if you share with 4 people or so. Odd to me that with so much thought in the design, they designed it in such a way that you have to cut into the fuselage to repack the chute every 10 years, then repair and re-paint. I believe owners are getting quotes for $30k+ for a parachute repack, not sure if that includes the rocket motor and I’m almost positive it does not include the line cutters since they’re replaced every 7 yrs. There are certainly some Cirrus-specific costs that you have to consider when you’re doing your pre-purchase research and budget.

Great airplanes, yes, but too expensive for most GA pilots, and above a lot of pilots' skill levels, especially with the inherent spin recovery issue. Also, isn't a G1000 panel, while very nice with everything integrated, an exhorbitant fit for a small aircraft?
@gbigsangle3044
@gbigsangle3044 4 года назад
There is NO spin recovery issue for Cirrus. That is a myth repeated by some. The Cirrus has the best stall characteristics of most GA aircraft. Spin recovery is the same as with any other aircraft. The plane is placarded against intentional spins as are most GA aircraft. Cirrus recommends spin recovery if there is enough altitude UNLESS you believe the recovery would not be possible given other circumstances, the the chute pull is the best emergency method. The Cirrus was spin certified in Europe EASA. It was not spin certified in the USA because it wasn't required.
@gbigsangle3044
@gbigsangle3044 3 года назад
What spin recovery issue? Again, the FAA allowed Cirrus to get certified without spin testing given the chute. BUT. Europe did not, and Cirrus had to demonstrate it to get EASA certification. The glass in a CIrrus fits the mission Cirrus is capable of, namely cross-country all weather flying up to FL25.

To me, the Cessna 300/350/Ttx are much better imo. Just didn't do well in the market and again overpriced just like Cirrus for most GA potential buyers.

"Cirrus is under-rated" said nobody, ever. Maybe over-rated. A million dollars for a fixed-gear, single engine piston.

it only has a parachute because the plane would not pass being certified without it,,, meaning the wing is a bad design,,,, a parachute is not a good thing for non pilots to understand,, being under the chute the descent is twice as fast as a plane being full stalled with no chute ,,, plus there is no forward travel component being under a chute,,,,, you hit hard and fast and flat under a chute,, all bad thing ,, you are far better off being in a plane without a chute
@gbigsangle3044
@gbigsangle3044 3 года назад
Not true. Cirrus is fully certified. The FAA allowed Cirrus to forgo spin testing because they demonstrated the chute will correct any spin. Cirrus did demonstrate full spin testing to get European EASA certification.
@MAGApepe

@@gbigsangle3044 ya faa with the chute,, meaning its not cert without the chute as its not likely to recover on its own,,, the crash and death rate for a cirrus is near the top of all GA

@@MAGApepe Quit lying about Cirrus. It just makes you goofs look more feeble and jealous. Cirrus is a FULLY certified aircraft in the USA and Europe. They did spin testing in Europe so the plane can easily pass that test. The FAA exempted the spin test in the USA because the chute is SUUPERIOR to recovery in a spin. Cirrus has the BEST safety record in GA. Period.

UNDERRATED !!???? I’d say the most overrated hands down … cirrus is not that great of an airplane. especially being compared to the DA-40 … why does everyone “love” cirrus ? Because of the parachute . Oh ok well why does it have a parachute? Because it has to . They have. HORRIBLE Saftey record! between the 20 and 22 there was 16 fatalities in 2011 alone. not only that It won’t come out of a spin . Also a da-40 with a complete engine failure will descend slower than a cirrus with a chute deployed . Also Diamond has 1 fatality in the history of diamond aircrafts . For the amount of money they cost you shouldn’t have to slam the doors for them to shut and the knobs and what not are garbage plastic . If I’m paying that amount of money the doors should shut with ease and the knobs and other stuff should be billet (for example) like the DA-40 .
