Not gonna lie. But they go to the council with literally no evidence to support their accussations. The council is absolutely right to deny their request to remove saren from the spectres at that point.
On the matter of being a Council Race: They must both be able to contribute financially, diplomatically, and militarily to galactic stability. The Volus are actually a “client race” (vassal) of the turians. The Volus are poor at fighting, so they agreed to become a turian vassal in exchange for military protection. So they are completely and utterly dependent on the turians for protection. Adding them to the Council would just give the turians 2 votes. The elcor are also very disinclined to military pursuits and are too insular to have much influence. The hanar would be more influential if they weren’t so religious. Finally, humans arrived on the scene, already settling several systems, with a massive military presence, and we successfully fought the turians in the brief First Contact War. In effect, the Council met Humanity and discovered we already had a level of strength on par with a Council Race. They fast-tracked us to embassy status to get us in line, but we’re too independent and rebellious, so they shaft us politically to try and reign Humanity in, lest we dominate the galaxy.
Humans found a cache of Prothean tech and pushed it straight into maximum military power so we could leapfrog ahead quite a bit compared to other species.
@@j.f.fisher5318 Well sure. That doesn't change the fact of how powerful we are. Plus (SPOILERS FOR ME3).... the Asari did the same thing, sitting on a MASSIVE trove of prothean technology and intentionally keeping it secret so that they would remain the most advanced civilization.
I dunno about that tbh...she still misses a lot! For an instance she didn’t approached and talked to Kahoku after talking to Council! She didn’t check all the sides of the towers for more keeper scans and she just ran past the arguing hanar and c-sec officer as well...i don’t think this is good paying attention tomdetails at all...
I loved and took in the game a bunch my first play through and missed a ton. There's so much to do and interact with. Maybe a person who's played it multiple times knows every in and out and knows what to look for so it's easier to say something like you just did... but a first play through is bound to miss things. She still takes in the essence of the rpg gameplay and embraces it unlike many "gamers" these days that if it ain't a FPS or COD they get bored in 3 minutes.
I know, to think I was in middle school when these came out. I spent many late nights on different playthroughs. I've played #1 and 2 at least a dozen times each, what a thrill it would be to see it again for the first time =D enjoy!
Love that your taking time to explore the lore such. Such a huge universe with so many great characters and u haven’t even met my second favorite character (Garrus#1) Wrex!!
Just you wait til part 3! ;) Thank you, diving into the lore adds so much and make way more fun. It's a shame I have to cut reading the codex out for time.
That's something i've considered doing on the channel (both with the lore and voice things in general). Maybe i'll put something together for Mass Effect in the future...🤔
i really love this playthrough. Most people are too used to the newer, fast paced, style of videogames. Glad to see you take your time to get into the lore and explore everything!
@@LucyusMaximus don't worry you'll see him again :) I like these playthroughs, it reminds me of my first time playing this series. You'll be playing this series over and over, finding things you missed and making different decisions. It's a fun universe to escape to.
This is turning into such a wonderful and refreshing playthrough. The story and characters are some of the best aspects of this game; it is nice to see someone so interested in it rather than just action/graphics/gameplay. Looking forward to more.
Just found this channel, its wonderful. Mass Effect is my favourite game ever, I hope you fall in love with it. Keep up the content I can't wait to watch your journey!
@@LucyusMaximus No problem. Welcome to the Mass Effect universe. This is one of the best trilogy of games ever made. If you want any more tips, "i'll be glad to help. No spoilers, I promise.
Absolutely love this series and the way you play the game, your curiosity, attention to the world around you, to the story and your love for the characters, I work night shift and I listen to this series all night, makes time go much faster I just hope you played all 3 games, so thank you!!
@@LucyusMaximus The beautiful black cat in the first video gave it away. This sparked a chain reaction which culminated in my boy blearily glaring at me for waking him with my affection. Which was fair, selfish of me but... can't resist.
I'm thanking the RU-vid algorithm for serving up your channel. I'm happy and excited to see another person discovering the Mass Effect universe and it's lore for the first time! :)
25:07 "My favorite thing to do is annoy a Turian" probably pretty much how the First Contact War got started haha 🤣 They made walking around talking to people a wonderful part of the game.
Thanks! ☺ It is a bit overwhelming at first and there's a lot to remember but i'm really enjoying the slow burn of unraveling the world. It's so well done.
It's so great to see someone exploring Mass Effect for the first time and not just blasting through all the conversations or ignoring them. Honestly the strength of this game is the character writing and the lore and the general universe, & the gameplay is not as fun without knowing how it fits in with everything else. Good luck on your journey!
Always fun seeing someone exploring Mass Effect for the first time and getting totally absorbed into the universe. The only thing I'd say is look to use up all the conversation options. Easy to miss something.
Ambassador Din Korlack: "All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, food, colonies, terraforming, trade routes, the water reclamation system and public health, what has the Council ever done for us?"
The thing I love about Harkin? He's both self-aware that he's disgusting and trash, and yet has a persecution-complex about how he's getting fired for violating the law and regulations multiple times. He's such an odd mix of trashy personality issues that I can't help shaking my head and chuckling about how horrible of a person he is... And the fact that he calls his firing a witch hunt, when he just listed the legitimate reasons for it? It's so illogical, that I love it.
Right? I was amused by the fact that he's a scumbag but at the same time a few things he said about the system made me think "well, he ain't wrong..." The fact that he calls his legit firing a witch hunt fits his character too well.
An important thing about the Council Races and Volus History that I'm unsure will ever come up organically in the game itself (but which is kind of alluded to in that conversation, albeit in a manipulative manner) and completely recontextualizes all of the Volus Ambassador's complains about lack of influence is that The Volus are not a sovereign polity. They're a vassal state under the suzertainty of the Turian Hierarchy, a relationship which precludes the very concept of having any influence over international affairs or foreign policy by definition. When he says that they sell the things they're good at for protection, that's basically a euphemism for being free to work to their strengths by trading the ability to make their own foreign policy for protection from a stronger military power. Small, isolated, but wealthy nations - no matter what their past contributions to the early finance sector - with no experience dealing with foreign policy for literal millennia are only very rarely given sweeping authority over trillions of others whose needs and priorities differ from their own so drastically. You might as well give San Francisco a seat on the U.N Security council.
The MAJOR thing to take from Part 2 with political intrigue and galaxy spanning consequences … having a couple of elcor buddies would be amazing right? Just super chill dudes backing you up with positive reinforcement.
As I watch through these playthroughs I really hope to see your use of the power wheel improve. It took a bit of time for me to master it as well as controlling my squad's movements, weapons and abilities the first time around too. It gives you a chance to freeze time and pick your targets, position your squad and choose your weapons and attacks/defence.
The most interesting insight I can bring to the early gameplay of ME is about the galactic politics. I like to compare the political landscape to that of Earth in the lead up to WWII. The Asari and Salarians are roughly analogous to the British and French respectively: well-established empires in varying degrees on power. Most players are predisposed to think of the Humans as the “ugly Americans”, but the Turians more closely fit that role in our analogy: a relatively young power that has firmly established its bonefides in the most recent theaterwide wars. Humans in this analogy best fit the role of the Japanese: a rapidly emerging power with an ambitious drive to expand and be treated as equals despite being heavily xenophobic in private.
You know, the more I listen to you speak during your play through of Mass Effect, I have to say you have a voice that would be really good for voiceovers or podcasting or something like that. It’s elegant, sophisticated, relaxing, and nice to listen to. As for your play through, I’ve played and beat The Who mass effect trilogy probably 6 or 8 times, as well as almost finishing Mass Effect: Andromeda at this point. It is really cool to see people play this hallmark of gaming for the first time. Also, Mass Effect 4 (not counting andromeda) was announced recently if you didn’t know. It be cool to see you play that. I know I’ll be getting it.
Thank you so much! I would love to get more into voiceover. I'll definitely be playing through the trilogy, Andromeda and 4 when it eventually comes out. Thanks for watching!
Coming from the POV of someone who has completed the whole series. My favorite parts are when you focus on a thing that will be important later but you don't know are important.
These lets plays are fantastic! I just finished the Legendary edition and been a fan since the original versions released. It's really great watching someone experience this for the first time, and especially to be so quick to pick up on the lore and story. It took me multiple replays to catch some of the clues and hints you're picking up. I definitely look forward to the rest!
After reading all the other comments - not much to add except that watching (and listening) to you learn the Mass Effect world brings back such treasured memories when I first played it. It's aged well - in fact I think it was the high mark in RPGs, not reached since. Even Andromeda (ME 4) was a pale imitation of the original 3. (Like Star Wars I guess.) Enjoy your journey, Shepard!
I have to say that watching your reaction as you play through this wonderful game for the first time is a real pleasure. I will continue to watch this series and hope you enjoy this game series and universe as much as I do :) I especially appreciate that you are taking the time to explore the lore and get to know the universe and characters. It's what makes the game truly amazing!
also, when you bring up the power wheel (R1 hold), you'll want to have an enemy highlight in your targeting reticle before you confirm which offensive power you want to use. Otherwise, the power will hit wherever you are looking at the time you confirm it.
EDIT: I should have just watched another 5mins or so, but hey, it is what it is lol thoroughly enjoying your content though. Love watching new people learn more about this universe I love! In case no one has mentioned it, the Elcor and Volus aren't Council members because they do not have militaries and cannot contribute forces to keep Galactic Peace. The Council is kind of like a mix between a really tiny directorate form of government and the UN Security Council. The Turians are the U.S. as the primary military force, Asari are basically the French and focus on more political matters, and the Salarians are... well, they're I guess also the U.S. or maybe China with a strong focus on research and development. All have large militaries and contribute peacekeeping forces. If the Elcor or Volus were to raise navies, they'd be admitted probably fairly quickly. Humans are the new kids on the block, having only shown up 26yrs prior to this game and because of a diplomatic snafu we ended up in a very small war against the Turians (fewer than 1000 casualties), but thankfully the Council saw the likely rapidly spiraling situation and brokered a peace. However, because of it being the Turian's fault largely for starting the conflict and because unlike basically all the other non-council races, we possessed a decent, if small sized military (at the time, our navy has ballooned in size by the events of this game, still weaker than the Turians, but not by much) we were granted a full embassy and had a viable shot at an council seat even though we hadn't been on the block very long. Many species see us as bullies and toughs for our fervent advocacy for our species and our strong military, but such is life
Watching these videos as someone who has completed the game dozens of times, I keep thinking “argh, no! You missed a bit!” But then I remember that my first play through wasn’t much better, and even then only because I have a very “find the shiny things” style of play, so fair dos to you. I hope you’re enjoying the game!
loving the full blown first experience playthrough! this is exactly what I looked like when I first played years ago! One thing that I enjoy about the remaster is the fact that you can run outside of combat in the first game, you have NO IDEA how annoying it was to slowly jog everywhere when you weren't fighting LOL
I started playing mass effect last week, I admit that I play pretty much like you, and that's why I love your gameplay, every time I advance with the story, i'll stop, and watch a video of your's curious to see your choices.. anyway you're great, keep it up!
Lol. I love it. You immediately get your guard up when she said she was a journalist. Your reaction is understandable since most journalists these days just want to make slanderous hit pieces about people..
Early on, and I was a sentinel at this point Ashly and Kaiden gave my squad abilities a balanced setup and later on Wrex and Garrus gave my squad balanced abilities, not sure how that lines up with any other Shepherd/Squad make up.
Garrus and Tali are 2 of my favorite characters. Kinda envious that you are going into this game blind though I still play with amazement and get a lot of nostalgia
It is useful to push more of the 'extreme' dialogue options. That will allow you to put more points in charm/intimidate. Liek most bioware games, ME rewards a more extreme character built. (You will be able to charm or intimidate npcs into doing things that would otherwise reauire violent solutions.)
I love the Elcore as the Mass Effect continuation of BioWare RPG’s having a “species” or “race” that has to preface their dialogue with a declaration of the intent of the statement because they deliver those statements in a monotone fashion regardless of intent.
@@LucyusMaximus they’re massive teddy bears! But I also love how politically complex the world Shep has been thrust into is. It’s one of the things that keeps me coming back. You’re playing with the Legendary level scaling so I would say play around with your dialogue options a bit. Jen Hale kills it as Shep regardless, but as you’ve seen with the accidental space racism the stated options aren’t always what you intend. So pick charm or intimidate as your main, but you can spend points in both to an extent and still be able to have fun dialogue moments. In the original edition your ability to level up your dialogue options wasn’t tied to your alignment. You could just spend the points. A thing you can’t do in either version of the remaster.
Loving your first time play thru milady! You have rekindled my longstanding love for this Epic Trilogy (I may soon plonk down the Creds to play thru the game again in Legendary Edition)! I have only one suggestion for your play thru... talk to your Squad Mates more. You may be missing advice (as well as some fun flavor text)! Anyone (or anything) with that "Blue Ring" is "interactive", and your teammates might have more to add to your situation. You are more fun to watch as a first-timer! A few of the others are speeding thru their play, and skimming dialog... And your furry companions are a fun distraction in the background! Looking forward to your next installment of your Adventure! Play On!
Drifting through looking for Blind runs (I'd play ME trilogy again, but working on other things, and I know how much this trilogy absorbs my life) - but I'm glad to be here watching.... can't wait to see how your run pans out, because I know you've already done things differently from the way I approach the game.... (and what you miss as well!)
I've seen a lot of lets players for this game do dedicated videos for Codex Entries. There is A LOT of interesting information in there and the Mass Effect community really loves the lore and seeing people discover it. An idea to ponder :)
I recently discovered your channel, and I’ve gotta say, as someone who’s played the games before, I’m enjoying watching you play through this wonderful trilogy for the first time! I’m excited to see the choices you make throughout the series :D just subbed; definitely gonna check out your other playthroughs too!
In case no one has mentioned it, there is such a thing as an Elcor plushy in the ME Gear section of BioWare's website. They're out of stock currently, but if enough people get on the "notify me when this is available" mailing list, it could get brought back. You know, if that's your thing.
As a general BioWare guideline, not game specific but something you realize after playing KOTOR, Jade Empire, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect: Do all the side quests you care to before proceeding with the main quest. This can be a real grind in ME1, but a complete play through clears a lot of flags in the sequels. Also, the more casual NPCs live, the better.
I'm not sure if you know it now, but just a remark on Din Korlack and the volus: The reason that they haven't gotten a seat on the council despite having contributed greatly to the economy of the Citadel and the surrounding space is because species on the council not only have to contribute in those ways but, more importantly, they also have to contribute militarily. As Korlack even mentions himself, the volus aren't physically adept and they aren't fighters, they'd rather hire other species' to do that work for them. Because of this, they haven't gotten a seat on the council since having a species have that amount of burden when they are unavailable to shoulder it would be unfair to them, and is also why they have an embassy to begin with. They are important enough that the council values the needs of their people and ambassadors have a fairly big and important role, even if Korlack makes it seem like it isn't. It doesn't have anything to do with racism or classism, as much as it sounds like it with Avina's "lesser species" comment. If you needed aid or were being threatened and a person who was in charge couldn't help you because they couldn't handle the role they were given, you too would question why there were even in that position to begin with.
Hey I think some of the dialogue is cutting out because you only have part of your headset on. The game's audio is direction based so if someone is talking to the right side of Shepard, you will only hear them on the right side of your headset.
I checked the audio while editing and heard the same thing (or lines cutting out completely). Other people seem to be having the same issue on Playstation/Xbox.
I am enjoying watching your playthough. I am a long time mass effect player and have played through all variations of male Sheppard so it's nice to see the difference of female Sheppard. One small piece of advice. You need to look around more. You left a lot of equipment and credits on both eden prime. Also be careful with the fast travel. It will cause you to miss things. Really enjoying your playthrough and hope my tips help.
For those who don't get it, the Citadel is basically the UN, so everyone you meet is working for some arm of govt, military or bureaucracy. No prols here. The council is equal to the permanent members of the UN council.
The reason humanity got a embasy so fast is same as why they wanted for council as i said militery the council discovered humans when humans went to war with the turians be ause we gave one the strongest council members armied a good fight they wanted human militeries and saw humans as a militery force that could effect the galaxy
I don't know what the populations of the non-human races are, but the population of Earth at the start of the trilogy is ~11.5 billion. Compared to 17 million quarians on the flotilla, and fewer than 400,000 drell. That's a lot of bodies to throw as an army, and it's a big economy potentially.
@@chrisd7047 yea humans are capable of maintaining the needed military budget plus humans are naturally expansionist and explorer so humans will allways rapidly exspand as far as their economy will handle add that to how humans are pretty war like in nature
Just... when you start talking more to Ashley, don't make snap judgements of her right off the bat 😅 there's always a reason for these things Loving this playthrough!
IIRC there is a level cap to level ups, you might want to consider specializing your squad mates abilities rather than spreading them out. Love the series. Subscribed
Hey, I like your Mass Effect playthrough. I have a request. Do you think you can upload future videos in higher quality...say 1440p? Reason I ask is that I'm enjoying your vids, but I watch RU-vid on a larger TV in the living room and 720p is too low res; kinda hurts the eyes.
Hey there! All of my videos are edited versions of my livestreams, which due to my current set up (and to make sure the stream goes smoothly) have to be in 720p for now. I'm currently looking into a better setup so I can record all my streams in a higher resolution. I really appreciate you watching!
From what I have heard, the reason the Volus wear those suits is because if they wear them outside their planet the pressure would make their bodies explode. Least from what I have heard.
I just love how you expend point in Pistols and shotgun and then use only the assult and the sniper rifle. I enjoy and respect your play, but as a veteran player that's a bit annoying ;)
It's not like it matters. The game is ridiculously easy on normal anyway. She could just let her squad kill them and run around just using melee if she wanted.
Me too, I like her aproach to everything else (taking her time talking and reading etc) but using the sniper constanly being a vanguard drives me a bit insane so Im skipping the combat sections
Hi, I just recently subscribed to your channel. I love your content. However, I just noticed that the thumbnail of this video is an image of Garrus in Mass Effect 2.
The keeper challenge is one of the most frustrating because there are a couple (of keepers) that you basically never need to encounter to finish the game. May I suggest you go on a wiki to get a map of the citadel with the locations of the keepers noted.
I made my first ever female Shepard for Legendary edition playthrough. I was so happy with it until I realized she looks like a duck if you look at her from the side... oh well I guess she doesnt look generic at least..
Haha I feel ya, it took a while for me to play around with it. I've definitely heard of people spending a bunch of time creating a character and then restarting the game because their Shepard looked totally different in game!
Small pro tip, if you're interested. Don't use sniper rifles or assault rifles as a Vanguard. Because you can only specialize/level up your pistol/shotgun skills, you'll never be very accurate with other weapons and they'll do less damage as the enemies get tougher. Garrus is the exact opposite and should always use an assault/sniper rifle. Kaiden can't specialize with any weapons, so don't worry about which gun he uses. He's a tech/biotic power guy.
Honestly, Pallin is one of my favorite minor NPCs. Your first impression might be that he's got something against humans, but nope, he just believes there's a proper procedure to everything in a way that I also can respect even if I don't agree fully. It's too bad they didn't do more with him, they put a lot of personality in the little bit of dialogue you get with him.
@@LucyusMaximus Yes, exactly! Also, I discovered your channel through this series, and I've gotta say you're doing a great job! Very insightful commentary and a lovely personality. Looking forward to watching more. :)
Elcor are the Eeyore of Mass Effect and the Volus are like the piglet of Mass effect, when it's said and done I feel for the elcor they're misunderstood.
@@LucyusMaximus Wait, till you play the sequels. ;) The writing of the characters gets better the more you progress in the trilogy (if you ask me) and especially these two become way more fleshed out in Mass Effect 2 and 3.
