These two will never know the impact they had on me as a child. My parents divorced when I was 11, and the first thing I remember happening was a package arriving at our house, addressed from my aunt three states away. It was this album, along with a letter. It was originally a gift for my mother as she grieved for our family being torn apart, but it much sooner became a crutch for my younger self. This album forms a part of me that can never be severed.

Listening on 1/13/22. Still touches me every time I listen, my perception of the story is unchanged. This is way past the desire, frustration, hurt - this is the point of agony. The heart wants what it wants, but depiction is clear: the line is palpable, but never crossed; the step-back is mutual; the bond is forever. Likewise the agony.

There was beautiful magic in their music that could sooth the soul into contemplation so that you could "feel" life. So few artists acieve that emotional empathy with the soul of humanity. Every song left you with a thought of the human spirit long after the music ended.

Ok, am I the only one that doesn't see it as a breakup song/ballad? To me its more recognizing that there are hard times in a relationship, and when its hard to love them during the hard times, you still do. In the hard times saying "I dont love you, but I always will" that's how I interpreted it at least :)

Yeah, it's easy to be conflicted in a relationship, sometimes bitterly and explosively conflicted...to the point of hurting each other. But then, the love, the vows, the wonderful moments are all still there in memory... EX-cellent piece of songwriting here, among many other virtues-both the video and the song.

once in a generation or two. last time around was Lindsay Buckinham and Stevie Nicks. but the chemistry they had in spades, John Paul and Joy Williams had by the truckload during the beginning. i suspect that a) they had the thing everyone thinks they had or b) Joy turned out to a massive, intolerable diva, like Hayley Williams

This is one of the worst duo break ups in history. They go on to win a Grammy & are never heard from again. You think they are on the rise to stardom and then just become a flash in the pan. It is really sad. Both had such a wonderful melody together & great musical ability.

I read time after time in every Civil Wars video's comment section that these two had an affair or were in love with each other. I always wonder if it was all the speculation that caused a rift. Joy's husband was the manager and there was a lot of pressure from what I've read and tried to learn. I think they had chemistry like no other but it was a professional love for each other and they sold it to us like two great stage actors. All the speculation, the creative differences, the pressure from Joy's husband, and I assume John's wife wondering if there is any truth to all the talk, I think that could ruin anyone. Whatever the truth is I wish them nothing but the best and I'm glad this exists. John and Joy, I know you will never read this, but thank you for the beauty you created.

This is how I felt about leaving my ex. It was so bitter and heartbreaking. We went through so much together. He was a terrible alcoholic that just couldn't give it up for his family, 20 years I tried. I don't know if anyone notices John Paul is using a gold sobriety coin to play his guitar in this video. My ex passed away at 46 years old. My 3 kids were young adults but we were still devastated. I always stayed on good terms with his family and we grieved together. I come back to this song from time to time. It is probably the only way I can sum up my feelings about everything. I could have never imagined when I first heard it going through our divorce that this is the way it all would end and now its been 11 years.
