I guess it would much like a marriage maybe worse as they are always together . It surely is a lost blessing as they were so amazing together . I've listen to the solo music of both and although great music it doesn't have anywhere near the same feel
@@njcranes Joy is happily married to her husband and has 2 wonderful kiddos, unless you're talking about John secretly wanting Joy then that's a possibility.
I still keep coming back to this performance year after year. It's just stunning. The perfectly-judged harmonies, nuances, phrasing...just so breathtakingly beautiful.
+Fer Coppe they cancelled a tour back in 2014 due to "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition," Joy spoke about it here: www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/joy-williams-interview-singer-songwriter-and-former-member-of-the-civil-wars-on-pouring-break-ups-10351217.html but basically John Paul wanted to spend more time with his family and they'd been drifting for a long time
+Chapterhouse86 I've always loved this for the profound difference and yet the perfect symbiosis of their performances. That sounds rather pompous. I suppose I mean it works because there's a perfect sexual and musical union between them, just adorable, but it's tempered by the bitter edge of the lyrics. The performance on Garrison Keillor is even better :)
People talk about Johnny Cash and June Carter, and I always liked Gram Parsons/EmmyLou Harris even better...till these two came along. They just...*FIT* each other, two very good voices that complement each other in a way that's beyond perfect. They are also kind of equally attractive, and ADULTS, which is rare. Put it all together and you'd have to be a musical nihilist or a hipster to not be electrified by the wonderful singing. (An effect they had on most of the audiences you see in their live performances.)
Each of their voices are perfect, and the two of them together is purely magical. Their harmonies are so in sync. It's like they were born to sing together.
This is exactly how I feel about them not being together as the most amazing duo to ever grace this planet. I want to hate them because I will never get the chance to stand in a small venue and let them carry me to every place in my heart with their music... But I "always will" love them because they bring out emotion in me with every song they've written and you can't say that about music you hear nowadays.
There's a bond there that may be broken now, but will always be there. The chemistry between them as individuals I can only imagine was as intense as their musical bond. Ugh, it sucks so much knowing I won't ever hear these harmonies and soulful voices together again on a new record.
So sad that a few years after this was recorded this was the final song they ever sang together onstage in London at their final concert. They didn’t look at each other once during that final performance and at the end Joy had tears rolling down her face. Where did it all go so wrong? Beautiful music, never to be recreated.
There's some underlying love shit going on there...probably broke up cause it was forbidden, since they were both married...you can see it in how they perform...the chemistry is leaking off the screen
These two had something special. Truly special. Its so sad that the world is robbed of those gifts together. You know it when you see and hear it. And these two had it. I wish they would get back together.
I watch this video from time to time, and the ending never fails to give me chills. The musical chemistry between these two is incredible. I love them so much!
Beautiful! 4 instruments......guitar, piano and their 2 voices. This song is only 3 chords and quietly haunting yet so symbolic of married couples in this day and age. I am learning/playing/singing this as a duet with a band mate. Male/female harmonies have been in short order lately, thanks for bringing the lovely sound of the two sexes back!
Whether they actually had an affair or not, there is undoubtedly a strong connection between the two of them. This performance itself gives a vibe that there may be a "forbidden love" message portrayed in this song. The way that they seem to get lost in each others eyes while singing each and every line is a great example of how they truly feel for each other. My conclusion may be far-fetched, but that's how it comes across from my point of view. Just my two cents.
Someone said the song is about their spouse's, that they had no choice but to always love them, I thought that could be the case! But we will never know thanks to JPW
@@stardustgirl2904 This is an interesting interpretation but aside from the chorus, the rest of the lyrics point to a toxic relationship ("your mouth is poison", "your hands can bruise", etc). I personally believe that they came up with this song quite randomly, but like much of their music, it was charged with foreshadowing. Their beautiful, unique, mystical musical bond turned into something so painful that they couldn't even look at each other when they performed this very same song in their last concert in London. Today, 7 years later, they are still healing from this split... Not on speaking terms... So they truly 'don't love each other but they always will'.
@@iamsultana Very well put. At this point it seems fair to say that these two will never work together again. Even the sudden breakup of Joy's marriage apparently did not bring about any degree of reconciliation, and she remarried a few months ago. She and John did recently make their fans happy by agreeing to help Taylor Swift re-record their 2011 collaboration, "Safe and Sound." But from what I heard they recorded their vocal tracks separately and did not meet. The three of them still sound beautiful together. It's touching that Taylor's later albums "Evermore" and "Folklore" really seem to reflect John and Joy's musical influence. I think John's 2016 song "The Once And Future Queen" was about Joy. "If I thought I was good for you, if I thought this could work I'd reach a little higher and pull you back to earth But the man you're really looking for, the one in all your dreams That someone won't be me And that's okay You never really loved me anyway Not enough to meet me half the way Oh love is something you can only take..." Someone who knew them finally spilled the beans a while back, saying basically that they were in love but not actually lovers for a surprisingly long time. When they finally gave in, it was too late. Then they could not go back, but Joy would not move forward with him. Apparently she hoped they could just keep on working together as if nothing had happened, but obviously everything was ruined at that point. John swallowed his anguish and left, and that was that. He's still with his wife and seems much happier these days. I saw him live in CA right before the pandemic and he was absolutely wonderful. He did a couple of CW songs, too. Around the same time, Joy's hubby unceremoniously dumped her, forcing her to literally cancel a whole tour at the last moment. He now posts regular adoring PDA shots of him and his second wife (a more glam version of Joy) all over his social media. I have no idea what the backstory really is there, but yikes. I hope Joy will be able to perform live again at some point. She's a radio host nowadays.
They're music is so unlike the more popular singers... you can clearly hear the voices of JPW and JW in a live concert, whereas, when Selena Gomez (as an example), you have to strain your ears to hear the voice over all the instruments. Poison & Wine is such a simple and powerful piece.
I've been watching Dave since I was a little kid. And I've got to say, his show has introduced me to the best artists. Thanks Civil Wars, and thank-you Dave
Do you ever think about what it would have been like if they never got together in the first place? Be thankful for this and everything they did together. Life happens.....nothing guaranteed...
This is REAL music. It really disgusts me that people today are obsessed with music that only speaks of sex and twerking etc, why The Civil Wars are not world famous really saddens me. I know that they are hiatus currently but they are still create the most beautiful music I've heard in a long time. I just really, really wish more people knew and loved them because they and their music deserve it more then anything.
@Percy BlackAdder --- Check out @JohnPaulWhite - He's on Tour with his 3rd release... I've seen him twice in the last couple of years... He just gets better & better with time... like Scotch or Bourbon 😉

Saw them in Leeds. England when they first came on the scene. Phenomenal harmonies. Probably a little too in tune with each other for their respective partners I feel
So. Let me explain. Joy had her husband, and John had his wife. On their last year touring together as The Civil Wars, Joy was pregnant, and, its quite likely that its John's child, but, they weren't going to let their marriages fall appart so they disbanded. The "official" story is that they had irreconcilable differences so they disbanded. They never explained what caused the "irreconcilable difference", but you know what sure as shit can ruin a relationship? A baby. Oh yeah, and being married to other people while you and your singing partner tour the world together. Lets be honest though. If you were John, you wouldn't want to get with Joy? If you were Joy, you wouldn't want to get with John? They were perfect for eachother, except that they were already marrier to other people when they met. Right place, wrong time.
You only know what I want you to I know everything you don't want me to Oh your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine You think your dreams are the same as mine Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will I always will I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back The less I give the more I get back Oh your hands can heal, your hands can bruise I don't have a choice but I'd still choose you Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will Oh I don't love you but I always will I always will I always will I always will I always will I always will
People speculating about them having an affair is exactly the reason they broke up. Fans always question why they broke up but they never stop and look in the mirror and realize they caused it. Joy is happily married with 2 kiddos, despite John and Joy's chemistry, she obviously is very happy with the life she has with her husband and kids.
@Caboosetm88 They probly let Madonna take her time. Right? But making it to Letterman is still huge for a lesser known talent. This version was beautiful to me. I enjoyed it. :)
