Former BBC Local Radio Presenter Alex Dyke pays tribute to broadcaster Steve Wright, who presented programmes for BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 for more than 40 years, and has died at the age of 69.
A statement shared to BBC News by Wright’s family said: “It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright.”
BBC director-general Tim Davie said everyone at the BBC were “heartbroken” at the “terribly sad news”.
Alex says: "His radio show was everything to him and it was his life"

Words like Legend and Genius are bandied around far too much these days, but certainly applied to Steve. R I P Steve.

Soon as Steve went from Radio 2 that was it for me I haven't listened to Radio 2 since, so sad Steve has passed away truly a legend as I grew up listening to him from the the late 70's

@ritch195 Yeah I know but afternoon radio was dire afterwards, I tried giving Scott Mills a chance but after a couple of weeks I couldn't bare to listen to it anymore, as for weekend radio I very rarely listen to it.

I used to listen to Steve Wright In The Afternoon on Radio 1 many years ago, and he was brilliant with all his different characters. Who remembers the day when Mr Angry got shot. It actually made the national press!!. The days of broadcasters like Steve Wright are long gone.

Steve referred to his boss as a "friend" even as she was sacking him. Steve was a class act. She, on the other hand, should be ashamed of herself.

I kept some audio tapes of SWITA in 2001/2 and on one of his programmes he said "stick with us, we will last 19 years" Well he made a couple more but I wondered why he said that.I loved his programme and pleased I kept some recordings.

I listened to Steve Wright on line from Ireland his show was nice and Light with funny banter , he played a great mix of music , he'd also have some great guests on his show ,his co hosts were also great they all had a great chuckle on it about all sorts of things , once he was axed I stopped listening , RIP Steve you will be missed .

Sadly radio 2 boss Helen Thomas simply hasn't got a clue radio 2 has always been for the mature audience. They youngsters have 3 Radio 1 stations so for Helen Thomas to say Radio 2 was trying to attract a younger audience is utter nonsense.

I hold the BBC responsible for his death, he lost the will to live after they kicked him out for being old.

Really liked Steve. Being Irish, the man was old school with wealth of experience and transcended age, just everything. Why has England got it so wrong, getting rid of your best. I really don't get it.

Alex Dyke is a fabulous DJ & broadcaster...His weekend evening shows on BBC Radio Solent were worthy of being broadcast nationally, they were so good...Sadly the pinhead & weasel management of Chris Burns & Jason Horton at BBC Local Radio finished him & many other quality broadcasters recently.

Lets be realistic here, he had a magnificent and very very long radio career, working well beyond anybody else's retirement age and was paid very well for it; things, as good as they are, can't go on forever.

Jeezo bit OTT all this. The guy got a 40 year career, paid handsomely then a great part time gig in his late 60s. If that's a bad employer, god help us all! Also, did the sainted Steve not replace someone himself when he first started? Whole things is garbage
