Today on Dead Dodge Garage, we put a bunch of Chargers next to each other… for a treat. We compare my newly acquired 1968 Dodge Charger to my always-kinda-broken 1966 Charger, as well as the ‘Toolbox’ 1973 Charger (which I recently sold, but will still be in my life for months to come.) What similarities do these cars share? Leeeeet’s find out.

Great video! I got my first 68 charger in 1978 when I was 14 years old. Crazy thing is as a child I loved Corvette's, had model's and hot wheels. My uncle came up with the 68 charger body and I fell in love with it because of the coke bottle shape and had seen the move "Bullitt" I cut him a pickup truck load of wood for it and my dad helped me haul it and pull the car home. Someone had knifed the wiring in it when they pulled the engine and I traded my dirt bike for a 70 coronet for the engine to go in the charger. I ended up fixing the coronet instead of the charger because I didn't know much about wiring at 14. I parted the charger out and bought a 70 charger 500 I drove for awhile and traded the coronet for a GG1 68 charger R/T! I've had 100's of mopars since through the year's, Cudas, challengers, GTX'S, Roadrunner's and more! I had a huge collection and DIVORCE ruined it for me, lost my home, shop, sold cars it ruined me for awhile, then I started buying Corvette's because they were affordable, C3's only mopar I could afford now is an A-body and my dream of another charger is lost! Now I'm hoping to find a 68-73 Corvette to satisfy my love of the coke bottle shape, I have a 79 but I want the chrome bumpers!🤣

You have one of the most beautiful looking 68 chargers I've ever seen. Love the white interior! Basically, you own my dream car.

Thanks! It’s still a car, and I’m the first to say it’s not perfect - but it’s so much better than I thought I would ever have. My dream was exactly the same, but with black top and interior, and I wasn’t really sold on the white until I saw it in person. It’s absolutely gorgeous. The only problem is… I’m usually grubby. Haha.

Have had my ‘66 since I traded my 73 Cuda in on it in 85. Wish I still had the Cuda, but don’t regret the change. Today my son maintains and drives the 66, and one day his son will do the same.

That’s awesome. I hope my daughter wants to take on the ‘66 some day. It has a lot of sentimental value - she came home from the hospital in it, went to her first day of school in it. But if she doesn’t, that’s ok too.

I want to see more 66 and 67 chargers! Only really found out about them from your early magnum swap video. Something about them speak to me! I would ideally have one just like yours. Not perfect, but just awesome daily driver.

Right. I loved mine for that. It was fun - but often broken. Definitely more my fault than anything. I actually sold it to my friend a couple months ago. I decided I really didn’t need both Chargers. No regrets…yet… They are unique cars. The interiors are the best.

One thing you forgot was the massive hood change in 71 to 74 and the k frame of a 66 to 70 to the 71 to 74 with the rubber baby buggy pucks. I call yuk puks.. they are always rotten. 68 to 70 b body's were built with Nascar in mind with huge wheel houses you can nap in. Easy to stuff 12" of rhubarb in. 71 to 74 are heavy too. Oh and 71s had gills in the doors too. Minor things like that.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
Oh sure, there are plenty of little details. Charger R/T had the gills in ‘71, and then Rallye got those neat indentations for ‘72. 71/72 B didn’t get the pucks though, those came in ‘73 with the spool mount. ‘71 and ‘72 are more muscle car and less luxury. That ended in ‘73.

Great cars love them all do you have any 1970 super bees 🐝 yet or 69 roadrunners or any GTXS any coranets they were some really great mopars to just asking cause you got yourself a really nice collection of them hopefully you get them all done cause you definitely got alot of projects to keep ya busy for a while now but it will be worth every minute of it when you get them done and then you get to have the best part of all the hard work driving and enjoying all that hard work and sometimes getting aggravated and a headache but in the end it’s worth it all for sure

Okay, I suggest you do some work on the 73 charger and video your progress so we get to go along and keep you enthused with our encouraging comments, then, in no time you will have another to drive around making the decision about which one to take to work 33% harder.

I'm liking the idea, and will need the encouragement. I will be filming progress on the car... But I actually don't own it anymore. I sold it to my friend Tracey, who has ordered a mountain of parts and is sending it to be painted next month! Guess how he's funding the entire project? OK, I'll tell you how... By selling bowling balls.

I love all the Chargers, and the 68-70 are the most beautiful, but functionally the 71-74 are the best. The body design worked very well for NASCAR racing, and Richard Petty won a LOT of races in that body style,. The aerodynamics were better and it was by design because Chrysler designed that body right at the height of musclecar madness AND the peak of NASCAR and they were still racing on Sunday so they could sell cars on Monday.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 11 месяцев назад
Oh for sure. From an aerodynamic standpoint, the ‘68-‘70 car is a joke - hence the Daytona. The third generation car is much better there. And I do like the look of them. But it’s hard to deny the beauty of the previous generation.
@clembob8004
@clembob8004 11 месяцев назад
@@DeadDodgeGarage I look at it this way. Were it not for the aero problems with the 68-70 Charger (and Roadrunner) the Daytona and Superbird would never have been built. Mopar was in it to win back in those days. They did whatever it took to defeat the competition.

I am astonished with your level of knowledge. However when it comes to the first-generation Chargers, one thing you forgot or didn't even know, I will be glad to point out. If you fold that partition down in the very rear package area, and fold the rear bucket seat backs down now, you have a space that you can fit 30 pieces of 5/8 thick, 4 x 8 sheets of plywood in the car and close the trunk lid. yes it's sags a little bit but it's not a pickup truck. Just sayin' oh, incase you have any inkling of a doubt, allow me to clarify: the '66 1/2 & '67 chargers ARE the best. And they were devoped to answer to ford's mustang. Hence the charger nameplate. Charger being the horse that the Knights of old rode into battle with armor and everything. Much larger much more muscular than the Mustang ever could be. And by the way they were developed for NASCAR as well. Elvis Presley drove one in that movie he did Fireball 500, or was it Speedway? but they really were raced competitively, with seriousness in NASCAR. You know, back before it was a word. They also were the debut body for the 426 Hemi. Sorry, it seems like you just glossed over most of the first generation history, which is understandable for someone who likes the second Generations better I'm not saying it's worse or better than the others. In closing I would like to say this, one of my friends used to rib me all the time about racing him. he has a 74 Camaro, 350 and 4-speed, and one day after months and months of this I got tired of it and I took the title to the old charger into the shop with me and when we were sitting at the lunch table and he started into his everyday goading and taunting and tormenting me, I put the title down on the table in front of him and when he saw that my big block and automatic Charger weighed 200 lb more than his small block and four Speed Camaro all of a sudden he didn't want to talk to me about racing. and I never heard another condecending remark regarding Mo Par in general. By the way, thank you for providing me the post with which to sound off from! MOPAR'S THE RULER! ANYTHING ELSE IS JUST A DROOLER! Edited to say; that full width taillight serves as something you can see when I'm already so far ahead of you that you know you'll never catch it. Seriously, don't try it. Someone will get hurt! I have personally seen my 150 mile an hour speedometer with the needle all the way around almost touching the 30 mile an hour mark again! And believe me podnah, that's fast enough...🤑....❤....
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
How on earth did you fit the 4x8 sheets in there? The trunk opening is just wee… through the windows? Also, I didn’t think it was a full 8’ from tail to back of the front seats, but maybe I’m thinking of the Barracuda. I am well aware of the racing history, that Elvis drove one in that movie, and that they were *the* Hemi car. If I should be lucky enough to own a real Hemi car some day, I would like it to be a ‘66. I love ‘em. The point of this video wasn’t necessarily to outline every bit of specific early Charger history. There is so much more that could be said.

Never liked the third generation. They added about a foot of nose on the front that looks stupid. Other than that they are ok. I like the 68’s the best as well. The second generation Chargers are all good.

I do like the third generation personally. Strangely, I think the ‘73-4 is the better looking car - but the safety bumpers have to go. Otherwise, totally agree.
