This is why I love this channel. Unlike most, when you fix issues, they are fixed as they are intended. Not grounds connecting 12 different operations. The fad is to undo everything the manufacturer did. Instead tweak those changes, don't try to reinvent the system.

The push to remove the key button on manuals is there so that you can't accidentally lock the steering lock. On an automatic you can't go to key out position except in park and neutral due to the key transmission interlock. The idea is if your throttle is stuck and you had to turn off the engine while driving it keeps you from locking the steering since in a manual there is no transmission key interlock.

Man, seeing that butchery made me want to vomit. I've had to unf*CK a couple of my cars in the past because somebody thought they were a wiring tech. This usually involved a trip to the pick-a-part and spending an afternoon extracting a used harness out of a donor vehicle, but at least everything worked like factory.

After working in Navy Aviation for a career, and fixing endless wiring issues? Go find the connectors, wire spools and required tools, then a 4x8 sheet of plywood, measure out the wires, draw the wire diagram on the plywood, pound some nails in, and start stringing wires. Making a new wire harness is absolutely easy to do, and as you are experiencing sometimes its needed. Take the original wiring harness and grab a multimeter and start making that wire diagram. Might take 16 man hours....and some money, so, its difficult but doable.

The leaver to remove the key on manual transmission cars is for safety if you ever have to turn the key off in an emergency situation it doesn't lock the steering wheel because most older manuals are unaware of what gear they're in we're automatics if you try turning the key off it'll never go into the lock position while the vehicle is in Drive

Isn't this just a workaround for a system that prevents you from removing the key when the car is not in P in an automatic? So that you have the same steering column in both a manual car and an automatic and they make you use a manual release for the key?

Hey Alex. Great stuff. 36:43 the Manual trans have that push lever to ge tthe key out. The automatics do have it. You'll find that if your shifter is in gear and engine off you can't pull your key out unless you shift into Park so, they've built that key safe in the auto trans. But it's probably there in manual trans car because it saves them designing a separate steering lock column for auto and trans and therefore saves them money in tooling etc.

Alex! It's Epi, Mike's shop foreman. I'm really glad to see you got it figured out. Holy moly that wiring is an absolute disaster! If you haven't figured it out already, the CCRM (constant control relay module) is what controls the fan (and other components). If it detects no signal from the ECM, it defaults to low speed fan on, hence why the fan kicked on when you undid the relay. Great video!
@physicusman

Good point. I had an issue with my AC not kicking over last summer on my 2004 GT convertible and it was the CCRM module not the compressor. Once I swapped that out no more issues. Took some troubleshooting with my local mechanic to figure it out but yes good call out.

I prefer to get all my wiring run, and tape the wire groups/runs together every 8-10 inches, and then use the appropriate diameter split-loom, carefully taping the intersections/branches. That way, if there’s a problem later, your access to each wire is so much better. Great work on all of these projects. We are all envious of your situation. Great episode Alex I am a fan of the SVT Cobra, I almost bought an SVT Mustang back in the day. The 4-cylinder version. I have a 1991/92 Taurus SHO that I totaled and bought a 92 and the trans had a huge hole in it, so I swapped the motor and trans to the 92 it was basically plug and play. My Dad had a 91 Mustang LX Convertible that I accidentally swapped the ground and power to the battery and did some electrical damage. I believe I would have needed to swap the entire car harness out. I totally enjoy all of your videos and the process by which you complete the work. I still have the SHO it's in the garage with a bunch of stuff piled on it. I was to get it running again and you and Vice-grip Garage have given me the motivation to do that. Thanks for another great video!!

Alex you will enjoy this one. As far as the ignition coil, yes I had one fry on start-up. I have a c230 coupe that I m113 swapped. Bought the 5.0l out of a e500. For $300 because of unknown mileage. However, you could tell it had never leak from valve cover gaskets or from the inspection port. So I had it all installed in the car. Ready for startup turn the key and could smell fire. Passenger side bank had a coil pack that had started on fire. Which immediately kicked one of the two main ECU fuses. Replace coil pack and replace fuse. And all of a sudden it occurred to me. The reason that they never were able to read the mileage was because that coil pack had blown the ECU fuse...

Hi Alex Tape vs corrugated. From my skid factory watching I have learned that the OEM Manufacturer generally know what they are doing with wiring. So I now reuse the factory wrap. The factory wrap allows for more movement as it is not sticky. Tape wrapping can cause the weight of the loom on the shortest wire, which can lead to eventual wiring problems. Corrugated tubing is sometimes used on OEM wiring so should be ok.

Hardest thing is to not get excited to early. Always do your checks. Check fuel leaks. Check for electric smoke. Check brakes. I am sure all that nest of wiring made sense at one time. Pieces added over time. I look at my wiring from 20 years ago and scratch my head sometimes. Lol

Don’t use tape or corrugated tube. Use the mesh type split loom that forms itself around the wires. Put heat shrink on the ends where you can for a cleaner look. You’ll thank me and groan anytime you see excessive tape or corrugated tube in the future.

Ford used to have "Everything we do is driven by you." as a motor, saying, whatever. Even paid Queen to write a song for it.

When splicing wires, I prefer to offset the connections ... the stiff area is a bit longer, but the post wrap is more uniform, but mostly there's no connector to connector rubbing change.

Hell yeah! Alex you kill it every single time. I personally would really love to see a collab with Jared Pink, I think you two master techs could brew up some sweet content, plus you would get to go somewhere that vehicles don't just return to the earth because of rust (If you went to Jared's shop). Either way, keep up the great work!

The push to remove key on a manual is added because there's no park interlock which prevents you from accidentally removing the key while driving.

GM had similar ATheft, turn key to On for 10 min, after 10 min AT light, should go off, Turn key to OFF, then to On 3x, 4th turn should start it. The Viper didn't help but you might keep the Viper box handy just in case.

that key locking system is a safety feature basically to remind you to put it in gear most cars use the neutral safety switch. but some manual trans cars went old school with a mechanical lock.

Your patience with that mustang is incredible. Great video. I’ve been watching since almost the beginning and I’m turning 24 next month. Love your star trek references I’m the only person my age I know who likes it.

I use split woven nylon wiring loom because it's more flexible than corrugated tube.. The corrugated stuff gets brittle from heat after a couple of years, and ends up not doing anything. Electrical tape turns to mush and gets hyper sticky, When you re-do the fuel system, make sure you use PTFE hose. With today's fuel, non-PTFE hose only lasts 5-7 years. Ask me how I know.

My answer is "Corrugated tubing which is then wrapped with electrical tape in a spare spiral along the length and tight wrapped at each end.... Adhesive on electrical tape has a rather limited life, particularly in an engine compartment, while I have seldom seen the corrugated tubing harden and crack to failure...
