The irony is the hostess is hilarioul and yet the subject matter is so soul crushing that if I allowed myself to feel or become emotionally vulnerable to this movie,, I would cry for four hundred years.

I worked at the theater and saw almost EVERY performance in 1988. The cast were AHMAZING. Danitra, Vickylynn, Loretta, Reggie, Tommy, George and the drummer guy were so friendly and inviting, and cool to hang with. What a SUPERB and fun cast! George's play was an eye opener for this then teen, what an education! He then went on to do Jelly's Last Jam (I LOVED it), Spunk, Bring da Noise.., Angels In America.... Ah the memories...

Love this play. I performed Ms. Pat, Photo Shoot, Madea Jones, the bald woman in Hairpiece and Normal Jean in Premutations with our local community theater group (Theater Workshop of Louisville) back in the day. This was the first time I had seen this production. Love the cameo of George Wolf! This cast was such a treat to watch! Really great theater, writing and directing! t

It's comical and sad How so many people criticize what they don't understand. I was actually in this play during College. We had to stop rehearsals several times because the subject matter was so heavy. The Director took time to let us have discussions and just breathe. This is the PAIN of Black folk masked with laughter and smiles, It's something we've been doing for YEARS. It's sad, this show is still completely relevant in 2021.

@edwardryan8524

One of the best parts of this work is the clever title. This subject matter is painful and triggering, but by making these skits museum exhibits some of the direct harm is removed. They are relics, they are history, (or should be) Museums hold artifacts that are still important for a culture or society to learn from, this play does that. These stereotypes ARE funny because they are so ridiculous. The subjects can be traumatizing, but this production gives us a chance to see them in a context where we can be partially removed and defines them with comedy. Genius

I remember this: by today's standards it certainly feels provocative and politically incorrect., but remains an interesting watch. We seemed to have a lot more leeway to push boundaries in artistic expression in the old days, or at least in a way that didn't focus solely and completely on ones sexual desirbilty and performance. I think the fact that this focuses more on the inner being is part of what makes the experience such an uncomfortable watch at times.

Miss Roj is a bit too over the top. The actor turns the already vibrant diva into a characature of herself. You have to slip into a true fierce queen like slipping into a Vera Wang dress and Jimmy Choo pumps. You can't force yourself into it like an undercover cop's first time wearing heels. You totally lose the rhythm and line of the poetry.
