3:55 Actally if you look again, you'll see that the dungeon is shaped like a tunic, as in the red or blue tunic you get at the end.

I think the dull, greyish colour scheme is actually a good thing. It makes the colored parts of the dungeon (that is, the puzzles) stand out and "pop" against the background. And given that the dungeon already throws so much in terms of coloured elements at you, having the floor and walls be colourful too would make the entire thing look way too messy and busy.

I find it funny that you critize the boss for being too easy when I had so much trouble with it in both versions due to it regenerating health. Maybe it's just a skill issue, lol.

Good call, I think health regen is a mechanic that draws a sharp distinction between different play styles. Brawlers often find regeners much easier than slower styles of play.

I think the best way to improve the boss would've been to make it more lije the ball enemies you have to drop in the right colored hole. Here's my take: You enter the room and there's a blue triangle at the top of the room where a blue hardhit beetle waits for you and two red holes on either side. You remember that the magic powder changed the color of the blob miniboss so you use it on the boss and he changes from blue to red, and now you have to smack him into the hole before it bumps you into the other. When you successfully knock it into the hole it takes damage if it was red and then changes back to blue while launching out back to the blue triangle, landing so hard it drops rocks from the ceiling simlarly to the other miniboss. Once you do this enough times you win. This way all the lose end themes of the dungeon would come together as seperate "tutorials" for the boss

Fantastic job. So true about the lack of creativity in this dungeon. As far as the reward choice, I always pick Red Tubic until you get access to the Sword Upgrade. Then I switch to Blue.

if you ask me, i played this dungeon when the Switch version was new, i think the reason the boss is so easy is because its just an optional dungeon. sure, i cant explain why the mid bosses are harder but still. we have to know that when this game came out at a time before Breath of the wild was supposedly even conceived. there was no monk mas koshia 30 years ago. but its also the confliction: do you want to give your players a painless relaxing dungeon after they went out of the way to look for this optional dungeon or do you want to give your experienced veteran players a challenge for a strong boss and dungeon for one of the best things in the game for getting the DLC? we also have to know that at the time when the original links awakening came out, it was only the 4th game in the series. nowadays we have 40 years of experience and a crapload of games to look at. but to people 31 years ago, all they had as mainline games were the original, zelda 2 and link to the past. that was it. sure, adventure of link has a reputation for being the hardest game in the series, but all in all, if we went back im pretty sure they COULDVE made the color dungeon harder...

I think this dungeon needs to be taken in context with the time it was originally introduced. I grew up on GameBoy and GameBoy Pocket. Having color was incredible. And having a dungeon designed specifically around this amazing new tech was really amazing. If they were to do this again (such as in the remake), then it would definitely fall limp. The colored goo enemies were a lot harder to spot on actual hardware as a kid. I really like all your ideas about the boss though, that would have been epic.

if you don't have Pegasus boots, you get a message like "this tombstone will stay locked for those that don't have the force to go by themself", or maybe this was due to bowbow

i dunno having a permanent guardian acorn or piece of power buff is always welcome. i always go for red. plus red tunic also comes with a cool effect when you hit enemies. you send them flying like you hit them with a home-run bat thats super satisfying.

Honestly, I feel like what they should've done for the remake is flip the whole concept on its head. Forget all the symbols and accessibility touches; what if when you first enter the Color Dungeon, *every major element* was monochrome? Suddenly, now every puzzle seems tough to parse (and maybe even shuffle themselves on a wrong guess), enemies are harder to predict, and broadly the whole thing feels impossible to make sense of... at least, until you solve a few combat challenges, scrounge up a few keys or use your existing tools, and bring the color back to some rooms. Or perhaps a unique dungeon item exclusive to this dungeon, that disappears upon leaving, that temporarily returns objects back to their proper color? Or, get this - maybe color is returned to objects after using *Magic Powder?* Y'know, the item the two skeletons guarding the entrance, after pushing the headstones, tell you to stock up on and even sell? Speaking of which, the two skeletons first ask you to identify what color their clothes are, which always struck me as a "Game Boy Color Check". As if trying to make sure no one was foolishly trying to run this game on the classic Game Boy in Black and White. So why not treat the whole dungeon like that? You could even bring the symbols and accessibility touches back once an object or room returns to color. There's just a lot they could have done, I feel, and it's a shame that so much didn't get done with this.

Fun fact: You can reach the color/colour dungeon as soon as you get the Roc's feather, meaning that, if you REALLY wanted, you can have it be your first completed dungeon. You don't actually need to be able to check the book, as the pattern to push the graves never changes. Also, if you rescue bow-wow, you temporarily lose access to this dungeon, as the dungeon says that it's cowardly to try to come in with a companion. I assume this is still the case if you have the blue cucoo and Marin with you as well. On an unrelated note, I like going for the red tunic ASAP to make the rest of the game faster, and then if I want to go for the Koholint sword I'll switch to the blue tunic since the Koholint Sword and the red tunic actually don't stack their damage buffs.

Pretty sure I touched on that part in the pre-dungeon section. I chose this placement in the series since this is when the game feeds you the info- but you could enter sooner you memorize the order or somehow brute force it. Also, from what I can see both online and from my own testing- they do seem to stack, however it is entirely unnecessary since most common enemies don’t have enough HP to warrant it- and bosses like Moldorm have a hard coded “no one-hit-kill rule” preventing you from taking full advantage of it

@@CaptBurgerson Oh yeah you absolutely did touch on it, I was moreso meant that the only hard lock on reaching it is Roc's Feather to reach the graveyard, and that I think it's neat that one can reach and complete the dungeon without even getting the Full Moon Cello. Thank you for the correction on the damage stacking, I think i confused the Red Tunic stacking with the sword upgrade with it not stacking with the shard of power thing.

There is definitely a big difference between versions. I remember the "window" for attack being much shorter in the gameboy versions of the game than the Switch version. The Color Dungeon was a fun add on, but the design for the dungeon itself was lacking.

When I was doing my no death hero mode run I stared with the blue mail so I wouldn’t have to run out of dungeons to heal as often, then switched to red when I had access to fairy bottles and medicine.

This dungeon is very mediocre, but I think the main problem is that it hasn't aged well. The dungeon was originally made to show off the new color capabilities of the Game Boy Color, but now that that novelty has worn off, you're left with a very meh dungeon. Still, I think the addition of this dungeon to the DX version was still much better than the additions added to the Switch Remake.

The Colour Dungeon is so regressive because of his gimmick. When it came out having colour on Your Gameboy was a sensation and so they just played around with the idea how can we show the capability of the new Gameboy. It is more a "wooooo look pretty colours" tech demo dungeon than a real one. Since having colour in a game is nothing new today the dungeon lost a lot of its appeal. Imo it is pointless in the remake... even back then it was kinda out of place. they should have added a sidequest/NPC that improves the tunic without that dungeon instead

This is my least favorite dungeon in the game. Interesting idea behind it, but it’s pretty clear it was an add-on with less effort than the other ones. I don’t know enough about the development to know, but I wonder if the original design team was different than the team that designed this dungeon

i never liked this dungeon very much cause its so simple, but i do like that its in a graveyard and makes the total count go up to 9 dungeons, like in the first zelda :)

I remember the DX version on Game Boy Colour. Always went Red. But I have a couple of ideas how the Dungeon could have been improved; They could have iterated on ideas they used in the Dungeons you have been through already. Added a second floor under the first, which is shaped like a Hat or Pants (whichever works better), and part of the design is moving between the two floors, with Doors that open with a specific colour active. Meaning the colour switch puzzles have a lot more significance, beyond dropping a key. Another element could be that some floors change colour as well, depending on the switch state (which there are minimum 3 of) All of this training (because that is what the Dungeons partially do, train you in mechanics) leads to how the boss would change. The floor idea that you gave, but with the switches in each corner. And the boss can also bang into them, to make the colours swap, to give him an advantage. And the edges would lead to a Bottomed Pit, much like the 1st Dungeon boss, which resets the fight. With the exit coming out in the adjacent room.

A fun fact about the red tunic is that it has a minuscule utility purpose too: it makes you pick up objects slightly faster, just like the piece of power. Unfortunately it doesn't make you walk faster too, lol

I think the colour dungeon is one of the best in this game. I love it. Despite how simple it is, it is a unique concept we never seen in a Zelda game

I often find myself struggling with the hardhit beetle, but as of today, i know that this is becaus i'm systematically using the sheild to block it's attacks so i can't get close

I always thought of it more as a showcase for the possibilities of including color the their games. Since it was a new gimmick back then.

My first playthrough of Link's Awakening I actually discovered the Color Dungeon without finding that book. It's really not that cryptic especially when you've been trained to always push graves by playing other Zelda games.

Very boring and gimmicky dungeon, with overpowered rewards that break an already easy game (DX being even easier than the original for a few reasons). The gimmick makes sense for DX, but not the Switch version. I wish they had replaced the Color Dungeon with Dampé (makes sense since it's a graveyard too), and kept the photographer from DX instead!

im sorry but you are just like my cousin, how can you call yourself a zelda fan if you dislike the majority of dungeons in the MAJORITY of the games ? i don't call myself a final fantasy fan bc i only like ff7 and that's only like 1/20 of the content of the series and i don't think people who hate the new pokemon games are pokemon fans they are nostalgia fans that like like 1/4 of the series content. I'm rambling now but i think i made my point and its not just him its something i think about for a lot of people. you clearly like a hard challenge and brain turning puzzles but in my opinion thats just not what zelda or nintendo as a whole is about, its about simple fights and puzzles that make for a fun time that even you little brother could complete. and thats why i love it.

I dislike 1 out of 9 dungeons in Link’s Awakening. I like the majority of dungeons in the majority of games. How can you say that is most? Don’t call my adoration of the series into question if you’re in going to cherry pick or misconstrue what I’m saying. Being a fan of something doesn’t mean blindly loving everything about it btw

With the color switch (10:45) and the boss part (13:30), this video seemed more like a parody. :D I also never liked this dungeon, LA is not worthy of having this incoherent mess as a 9th dungeon. :( Not even the "PUZZLE" of Gar and Dion is ambitious. But: Team Blue all the way!

the boss tries to get you to back off because he regenerates back to previous colors, so if you pause attacking he heals
