My now favorite zelda game. The dungeon designs are so good. Wish the bosses were a little harder or better yet I wish they would have added a boss rush with harder versions in the terror tower. Such a missed opportunity.

@@chrisjohnson9542interesting. I felt like the dungeons are very limited due to the limitations of the item system. Every dungeon can only have one type of item puzzle. I really love how Zelda dungeons progress with previous puzzles building on new ones. It’s a problem with the BoTW and ToTK dungeons as well. Edit: this is not me trying to say “you’re wrong” in anyway, btw. I love that different people find different enjoyment out of these games! It’s why it’s one of the greatest video game series of all time!

If you want to know what impression the whole lead up to the dungeon had to me, a kid who was 4 in 1993, I can tell you that the whole thing was magical. Thanks to my grandma, who noticed how much I wanted to learn reading and writing so that I can progress in the game, my reading skills were good enough that I was able to solve it after a little while. I still remember her also thinking of the little quest with Marin as a "cute little fairy tale". It was kinda stunning to me, to see the waterfall disappear... and then I wandered around for a moment, never noticing the way onto the mountain. God I love this game so much.

Thanks for sharing that. Sounds like a real special memory. I was born in ‘93 so I missed out on experiences like this with this game in particular. Sounds magical

@@CaptBurgerson Believe me, the memory really is magical. My grandma really used that affinity towards Text heavy games later on. It even worked out quite well when it came to learning english. Like... man, I am using the method again at the moment to learn Japanese. She was onto something, back then.

As a german the name "Taltal" is quite funny and as kid i thought it was chosen that way in the german version until i learned they are called like this everywhere. "Tal" means valley, so the german name "Taltal Berge" means "Valleyvalley Mountains"

I absolutely love his character ark in skyward Sword. It's always wonderful to see an enemy or bully join the team with the good guys so to speak. Especially when something as scary and implacable as say Darth Vader at the end of return of the Jedi. While Groose may have been something more of a caricature of the concept It's still great.

I like how the path from Key Cavern to Angler's Tunnel requires exploration of two very different areas of the map. It's the only instance where both places need to be explored between two specific dungeons.

When you get around to the Face Shrine, please don't forget to mention that the *other* shrine where you get the key (and one hell of a plot twist reveal) can be reached even before Angler's Tunnel, basically as soon as you get the Pegasus Boots

The music for this dungeon is one of, if not the only piece of music in all of video gaming that features euphonium as a solo melodic instrument. It has such a gorgeous warm sound, and I wish it were more commonly used as a solo instrument

I love the fact that there's skulls and bones in the Angler fish boss room, implying that this fish managed to kill something at one point in it's existence

So in the GB and DX version, you can actually snag that key that falls through the hole early. After you defeat the last enemy, you can stand just north of that hole and repeatedly swing your sword over it. As the key falls, there's a good chance your sword swing can snag it as it falls, allowing you to collect it before you get flippers. It's not possible in the remake because they lock your movement during the key fall animation.

I've seen several blind playthroughs where people brute-forced the tile puzzle with Pegasus boots jumps because kinda like what I said with the enemy puzzle in Bottle Grotto, the remake gives very clear "you did something right/wrong" indicators (the Switch version also has a different tile order than the GB version, which might make it easier to solve while jumping to and from the tile in the deep water). Since the players will still fall plenty of times into the water and take damage while attempting this, some of them even complained about the puzzle being too tedious and punishing. The solution to that would have been to make the placement of the deep water tiles more chaotic instead of lining them up with the grid of the safe floor tiles.

Interesting, and good point about those visual indicators. And I agree, that would have been quite the easy solution, for sure. Just place them farther out into the water so that you can't do a running jump and instead you NEED the flippers to reach them.

Fun fact: In both the original and DX versions you are able to skip a chunk of the dungeon by jumping the corning of the gap at 9:47 with the pegasus boots. This is not possible in the Switch version because the pegasus boots in that version are way more slow/limited. In the original/DX you have much more mobility with the pegasus boots.

18:10 I brute-forced it just now. Didn't expect them to provide the solution, but I did talk to the owl statue, which said something about a flashing light that doesn't apply to the puzzle, only the solution room. Oh well.

I agree with everything you said about the "memory" puzzle, but I think *technically* what it's doing is locking you out of the path forward until you have the dungeon item. You still need to know the order of puzzle to solve it, but either way you can't solve it until you have the dungeon item. It's almost like a double key. You need to know the solution and have the special ability.

I can actually confirm that you are indeed able to brute force the puzzle. And without even getting the Flippers first no less!! Some clever use of Pegasus boots and Roc's Feather jumps you can do it. I got a clip of me doing it on my Switch from my playthrough of the Remake!

When I first entered Angler’s Tunnel and heard the theme, I knew I was in for a treat of a dungeon and was not disappointed. I like to think this theme is the “calm before the storm” since it’s the midway point in Link’s dungeon progression.

Why oh why didn’t they include the photographer and picture opportunities on this remake. A giant misstep imo that means it will never beat the DX version 😔 The amount of extra little story and charm you get from them was amazing

It's so weird that they dropped the photographer, which adds so much to the DX version and would work perfectly in the remake too, but kept the Color Dungeon, which was made to showcase DX's color capabilities but was dumbed down for the remake and doesn't add anything beyond the reward. They could even have put Dampé where the Color Dungeon used to be, since he's a grave digger, and maybe moved the tunics to be rewards from Dampé or something.

The dungeon is shaped like a fish? O_O Like swimming downwards? I always viewed it as a trident, y'know, water = Neptune/Poseidon. :D In the original/DX version, the plus-shaped intersection could be cheezed, so you could get from down to right with a precise Pegasus jump. Don't know if Switch still allows that. About the seamless scrolling: There's Link's Awakening DX HD for PC (obviously taken down by Nintendo) which adds seamless transitions. I feels odd but nice. :3 Our German name "Wundertunnel" (Wonder Tunnel) is kinda lame but I guess they didn't wanna call it "Anglertunnel" since "Angler" is just a fisherman. :D

Link’s Awakening has some of the best dungeon design in any Zelda game. The same cannot be said about the bosses 😅

you can brute force your way through. in fact, in the 8 bit version you can get the boss key before the flippers however in the remake it is no seemingly possible because of the change in physics. you were also able to skip a small key with a well timed jump from the intersecting pits, which the remake made it nearly impossible. while its frame rate is questionable the remake did fix the jump physics especially how you can reach the boss without the hookshot.

also the tile oversight in angler's tunnel applies to the 1.0 (JP/NA) and 1.2 of the NA version (according to TCRF). so an OG monochrome version might have the fix made.

I prefer the RED mail then the BLUE one from the Color dungeon Switch/DX only remake it doesn't exist in the original Game boy version of this game.

It kind of breaks the game though. If you stack the red mail with the L-2 sword, you can even cheese the dungeon 7 boss by killing the Eagle in its first stage.

Weirdly this is the dungeon I had the easiest time. Although I wouldn't call this an easy dungeon. It is because the water puzzles were my type of puzzles. While I was stuck on Tail Cave because of an enemy I didn't know how to beat.

to this day (i never played the GB versions), i dont know how nintendo couldnt possibly created a boss THIS underwhelming. at least in the remake, it could still hurt you by knocking the Rocks but really, like Beast Ganon in BOTW, how the angular fish was even supposed to damage you is a mystery. i love LAs remake and i love playing the game and its always a tragedy to make the most underwhelming boss in all of video games be the boss of the most visually fascinating in the game...

Now after 3 days, I mentally always get the feeling that the angular fish is a lot like dark beast Ganon in BOTW. Maybe the Angular fish wasn’t supposed to be a threat because the rest of the dungeon was already the challenge. Maybe at the time they just couldn’t think of a way to actually utilize the dungeon item. I don’t know. But you could at least make the argument that Ganon at the end of BOTW was supposed to be a symbolic cutscene so it wasn’t meant to be hard. Maybe it wasn’t hard because beating calamity Ganon was the actual fight. Maybe it was to balance out everything else you do in the game. But again yeah, over a span of 30 something years between BOTW and LP to get two of the most painfully easy bosses (it’s actually worse for BOTW because Ganon is the FINAL boss of a game that came out in 2017 and Angular fish is a regular boss that came out in 1993 for GB).

Interesting perspective. I always found this dungeon to be a bit underwhelming, and a step down from Key Cavern. To me it feels way to short and easy to be dungeon 4. I feel it is more appropriate as dungeon 2.

I don't know if I like or hate this dungeon's new music. It's cool that it's no more the every cave theme, and some parts are soothing, but also some parts are very DISSONANT. The melody does its own thing regardless of the chords playing. Uh... that's a very odd musical choice.

Personally I was disappointed and didn’t feel Angler’s Tunnel was the greatest on the GB/C. Though the 2019 amped it up beautifully. The overall dungeon theme of the gb/c was my least favorite.

@CaptBurgerson absolutely agreed. I didn't expect that boss to be as easy as it was. I was super freaked out by the water and the unknown, but even with my horrible video game skills, managed execution with only one heart damage
