I went to the pictures 3 times to watch this film, cos I thought it was the best film I`d ever seen. The more you drink the better the film. I was ejected the third time as I was singing to loud. Happy days.
@@holymoly4122 I love The Commitments but I must admit Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee are my fave with the mournful harmonica. Sam Cooke does an awesome one too, as does Marc Broussard.
i would have given anything to watch this being recorded. their timing is impeccable, the lead is great and the background and musicians are second to none.
This wasn't Andrew Strong singing, it was Robert Arkins, (Jimmie Rabbitte) the guy that played the manager. It wasn't used in the film, neither was him sitting on stage singing with the band, on here under 'commitments, unseen footage' he has a good voice too!
Too right. Look, Sam Cooke is a GOD but this cover is better than his original. I think mostly because of the female backing. A woman's voice blends with the sentiment of the male lead perfectly. Cooke's original had a great baritone backup vocal but the mezzo-soprano fits the emotion of the tune even better.
Interesting stories about the cast: Andrew Strong (Deco) was previously to the film a singer and still does record and perform music. Of course, Glen Hansard (Outspan) is still recording and performing, and he won an Oscar for his song Falling Slowly from the film Once. Both Bronagh Gallagher and Maria Doyle Kennedy who played Natalie and Bernie actually are singers, and Maria has recorded albums. Angeline Ball who played Imelda, as far as I can tell, was not a professional singer. Andrea Corr, who played Sharon Rabbitte, Jimmy’s younger sister, is lead singer for the Corrs who went on to record five albums, numerous singles, including the UK Number One Breathless, and sell 60 million records. In 2009, Andrea married Brett Desmond, son of Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond; she and her siblings Sharon, Caroline and Jim - The Corrs, can each be spotted as extras in the film. The other bandmates are still performing as well: Michael Aherne (Steven, pianist) is in a Committments tribute band that also features fellow cast members Dick Massey (Billy Mooney) and Ken McCluskey (Derek Sculley). Felim Gormely who played sax player Dean Faye went on to play sax for James Brown and Rod Stewart, and toured with The Rolling Stones. He now performs in a six-piece Irish wedding band, The Controversial Allstars. The actor who played Joey "The Lips" Fagen, Johnny Murphy, does not play trumpet; but he did a pretty good job of "lip" syncing. The Committments reunited a while back for a series of concerts; the only cast members were Strong, Gallagher, Ball, and Hansard.
+Robert Wright thanks for the in-depth bio on a gr8 band and what an amazing charming movie full of that IRISH charm !! nowi know where to follow up on these performers ENJOY THE EVENING GUV!!
thanks for the information. i've listened to mary boyle kennedy sing and she is for sure a singer though not a blues singer. there are videos on you tube in which she sings. but those eyes will let her get away with a lot lol
CORRECTION. I SHOULD HAVE SAID THE WOMAN THAT PLAYED THE PART OF JOEY "THE LIPS" FAGAN'S MOTHER WAS MAURA O' MALLEY. SHE DIED IN 2014 AT THE AGE OF NINETY FOUR (94)
Both Angelina Ball and Maria Doyle were pro singers but not actresses.. Bronagh Gallagher was a pro actress but not a singer. I'd like to take all three of them home with me. FRED GALLANT
Once I saw the movie, I bought the soundtrack on C.D. Then I Started calling Andrew Strong, THE voice of the 90s. In 2016, my mind has not changed. But, the women singing are incredible singers indeed.
It's a movie about a bunch of people in Ireland who form a band and play soul music. After the movie became a success, various forms of the band performed live shows.
All members of the band were professional musicians and singers. I think they auditioned a couple thousand to get the final group. Andrew Strong was only 17 but his father was a music promoter so Andrew grew up with the genre.
i can't get this song out of my head, i think they do just almost as good a job as sam cooke . the push and pull between the lead singer and the background singers is as good as in the original record by sam
If you haven't already done so, read the book by Roddy Doyle that was adapted to the film. As it was written in 1987, I don't know if it is still in print, as I got a copy for my Kindle.
Excellent update thank you for posting...like a lot of other people, I was was inspired by this film to start a band back in the 90's. I will always love this movie and excellent soundtrack.
the secret to this is the push and pull between the lead and the background singers. just like sam cooke and lou rawls in the original. sam cooke's version is more soul, this one is more rhythm and blues. i love both.
@truthbetoldni - I'm pretty sure that the main voice on this is actually Robert Arkins, who played Jimmy Rabbitte. He also sings the opening credits song, Treat Her Right.
i watched the movie and everyone raves about the blond, but my eyes stayed on the brunette. my god what a beautiful pair of eyes. she's hypnotizing, i couldn't take my eyes off her.
@@halseytaylor9522 Yeah...that's what I understood. I was super into this group when they first came out. Really did a deep dive into the background. Led me into researching the creation of the blues in Nashville, during the American Civil War. Now I'm all about the Moranbong Band. More interesting history.
what a great piece of music. where the hell have these guys been. sam cooke has no equal for this song but god this is the closest second that i have ever heard. great song.
what a waste of talent omg what possessed you I know you don't care with a wonderful voice but you made me live at 21 I was widowed and I just played you, you being strong got me through it I know years but thank you xxx
Aboard the Antrim or the New Caledonia i met you there, you dont remember, but i live in Ringsted denmark and i want to see you in Ringsted Congress center, how do we do that
@truthbetoldni Andrew Strong made at least one album after The Commitments film as I have it - simply called "Strong" it's 10 tracks include (she's) some kind of wonderful, this bitter earth and an extended version of aint nothin you can do.
