Even as a kid…Alan Parker? Sold. Take my money. Fame. Angel Heart. The Commitments. Something about his directing style. The look the feel the sense of life is palpable. Love this film and it’s lasting appeal on everyone who’s seen it.
I listened to the soundtrack all the time when I was a kid but I never saw the movie... Well better late than never! 24 years old and tonight I'm going to finally watch that darn movie!
@@IronIck45 oh boy time to wind up my memory box. Hmm. I think I had a very different movie in mind when I watched it. I mean, I had listened to the music since I was a small child and had so many good memories with it because of that. My family members had given me vague descriptions of the plot and I had built the movie up I my own mind from there. I guess nothing can compare to the imagination of a child haha. The actual movie was very boring to the best of my memory. I honestly can't remember much of the movie. It was very forgettable to me. Also, one thing to note is that along with the Commitments soundtrack, my family and I also listened to the Blues Brothers soundtrack a lot and I grew up with that movie so I expected the commitments to have the same level of humor and entertainment as blues Brothers - which may not have been entirely fair. I hope this somewhat answers your question :D
One of the all time classics .... when I first saw it with my little sister Janaina we were just kids my sister were under 10 we went nuts it blew our mind .... I’ve never forgot it since that day ...
Anyone who has played in a basement band knows all the trials and tribulations they go through literally getting their act together in order to get to their first gig. This movie is hilarious showing just how that works. One of my favourites.

Just bought the Barrytown Trilogy....brilliantly written by Roddy Doyle, Superbly Directed by Alan Parker with an amazing cast!, the Commitments has to be one of the all time great movies!!!...it's a shame there wasn't a sequel but as Joey 'the lips' Fagan says 'it would be all to predictable!'..'this way it's like poetry!'. If you've not seen this movie I strongly urge you to do so!!!!.

It's part of the Barrytown trilogy, a series of books by Roddy Doyle, centred around the Rabbittes family. They were all made into films; The Snapper, The Commitments and The Van.
Now over 30 years, i still like it , cause the story is simple and true, You have to have somebody organising stuff, deciding what others have to do and than go for it.

Currently streaming (in Australia) on SBS On Demand. As good now as it was 30 years ago. Maybe better. Fabulous cast, fantastic music, very funny - the perfect movie. Really wish they still made movies like this.
I saw this trailer back in 2005 and I never knew what the name of this film. But I always remembered the quote "the Irish are the blacks of Europe, so say it loud I'm black and I'm proud!" Lmao in there accent!
I love this movie and this is the first time that I have ever watched the trailer. This is THE worst representation of this film that I have ever seen. This was one of those movies that my dad and I watched together because we were both so in love with blues and soul, and this trailer is the worst. The movie is amazing though, and the soundtrack stands the test of time. I will love it forever because of the amazing soundtrack and the actual story arc of the movie,

I just NOW found out this movie existed! I read Roddy Doyle's The Commitments 3 years ago. I picked up Doyle's Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha and started reading in a few hours ago, and in the authors bio it said that Doyle Co-wrote the film for The Commitments! I was like "theres a film????" now I must watch it
Was this ever made into a stage musical? If no…how come? Great story, great music. Nothing like a group of Irish kids to reintroduce the world to mid-60s Memphis soul.
I too, am mesmerized by this incredible film. Does anyone have any idea what Deco says after singing Mr. Pitiful? He says "Hello Dublin..." and then something else that angers the others. I've not a clue. Anybody else know?
i don't watch films, but I was channel surfing and caught this and was captivated - only film i watched in the last 10 years. it watch more if they were all like this but 99% are crap
it's one of those aspirational films which is actually a good idea of approaching the concept of starting a soul group, or music group of your liking, and setting yourself up as the manager. Ironically it's good for the drama, but not so good when you think if he'd stayed around - the soul group would continue to part 2 (perhaps there was a commitments 2 film, not sure on that). So the moral of the story is stay put, and eventually something, worth enduring, will happen.
+macabre2007 There wasn't a second commitments film, but there was a sequel to it. Most of the characters are different, but it's the same setting and the same humour. It's called the Snapper.
Great movie, I remember especially that gritty deserted towerblock where Bernie lives; that boy waiting for the lift with that horse was hilarious! Where was it shot?
