In this video we cover resistance training program design. From needs analysis, all the way through to periodization. Along the way we cover training frequency, loads and repetitions, training volume, exercise selection, exercise order, and rest periods.
This full-length lecture is from a talk I gave to a group of PT graduate students via zoom. Let me know if you like this format!

Just found out your channel, truly amazing content. Your video quality is perfect, great audio, clear, easy to follow, straightforward and well thought outline, you're an awesome teacher. Your videos from the biomechanics and essentials of strength training and conditioning playlists are helping me improve my preparation for a pt course I'm taking. What are, in your opinion, the most important books to read for strength training programming? Thank you!
@DrJacobGoodin
@DrJacobGoodin 5 месяцев назад
First, thank you for your kind words! Second, there are many good books to add layers to your programming nuance. I think any time a strength or performance coach with a history of success publishes a book, it is worth checking out (if only I had more time to read them all!) but here are a few off the top of my head that have been influential for me: Principles and Practice of Resistance Training (Stone), Periodization (Bompa & Haff), Scientific Principles of Strength Training (Israetel), Olympic Weightlifting (Everett), Vertical Foundations (Joel Smith), Speed Strength (Joel Smith), Triphasic Training (Dietz), Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning (NSCA), Strength and Conditioning for Sports Performance (Jeffreys & Moody).

@@DrJacobGoodin Thank you very much, I already read Scientific Principles of Strength Training, I'll get one of the others. Halfway through this lecture, also very informative!

Can I ask what software you use for these videos? I’m a kinesiology professor and teach some online courses using PowerPoint but I think this looks better.

Couldnt we use RIR to prescribe our training intensity when we talk about hypertrophy? Since the literature says that in a rep range to 6-30 reps, hypetrophy stimulus can be achieved if the set is close to failure. I am still an undergraduate, and i dont have experience in training people at a gym or a team. If we have 5-10 athletes to train, wouldn't it be time consuming if we tested every single exercise of the program to estimate 1rm?

Thanks, professor. I have a question. What is the difference between progression and progressive overload?
@DrJacobGoodin
@DrJacobGoodin 5 месяцев назад
For sure. Progressive overload usually refers to some aspect of training load, which can be comprised of training volume, training intensity, or training complexity (think skill). Example: adding one set per week to your volume of back squats, or increasing the average relative intensity of a session week-to-week. Progression COULD mean the same thing, but it is also often used to describe a sequence of exercises or training phases that are not greater in magnitude (though they could be) but rather different in emphasis or execution. Example: progressing from hypertrophy to strength to power over 3 mesocycles of training (training phase progression), or progressing from goblet squats and jump shrugs, to front squats and hang power cleans, to full cleans (exercise technique progression)
