The Complete - Star Trek - TOS - Pocket Books - Part 3 - Just Killing Time!
In this video we take our third look at the very earliest Star Trek books as published by Pocket Books. From The Search For Spock through to the controversial Killing Time, a few real rarities included here as well as some books which would go onto becoming Trek classics. Interesting to see so many female authors in this batch which saw a time of upheaval and disarray at Pocket with editor David Hartwell leaving for Tor Books. Enjoy!

Both the first and second printings of "Killing Time" list them as "First Pocket Books Science Fiction printing July 1985." Under this is the sequence of numbers counting down from 10. A first print has the numbers count down to "1." The second print has the numbers count down to "2." They are both 311 pages and the title on the cover of a first print is in raised lettering. The changes between the two versions are certain "controversial" lines being removed. On page 41 of "Killing Time" appears the sentence: "I understand that you were probably playing with dolls and wearing lipstick until you were twenty." The second sentence that is removed is "And I also understand that you're probably double-jointed-since you've got your head so far up your ass that you'll never see the light of day again!" Many sentences such as these were removed for the second print.

I read Vulcan academy murders I high school. I own a copy of Uhura'a song. I can not give it high enough praise. 5/5 stars. The secret is a shameful one that the Euoans won't talk about, though it could cost millions of lives. Those taboos and legends will provide the secret that might save the entire federation. Its a beautiful story.

Another interesting video Jules. Would you believe I've never read a Star Trek book ? I think I always thought that they weren't " Serious " or proper Science Fiction. Guess I was wrong about that but I just never around people who read them. But then I don't know that many people who read much of anything. Electronic media has dumbed the people down .. And that's a sad thing. Stay safe my friend.

That 'Search For Spock' novelization was the subject of my only ever shoplift when I was thirteen years old. Shame on me. But I had zero cash and I ABSOLUTELY had to know if Spock somehow returned from death. Loved the book but have never really shook the sense of guilt that is now forever associated with it. Don't do crime, kids!

Thanks. These books are great. Some cries out for a tv adaption. There are even a couple of ' rare avis ' . Looking for forward to the others. PS..the spines of the second books...the colour are different ??? Also i might be wrong but i remember kirk did adress rumors of him and spock. ( foot note..Star trek the Motion Picture novel ) lol. The later shows STNG was a little bolder . Thank you and🖖

A very long time ago, I purchased four Star Trek novels. Here is what my fading memory recalls: Pawns and Symbols - - This was so well written, in terms of character development and story structure (and a few science fiction ideas as well), that I was convinced that the writer must be an experienced professional author. I just wonder if Majliss Larson is a pen name. Dreadnought - - I couldn't finish this one. Although the writing was clever, the author seemed to have a political agenda. It was like she was a fan of Ayn Rand or something. The Vulcan Academy Murders - - This was very enjoyable. My only critique was that I solved the mystery quite early. Still fun. How Much for Just the Planet? - - Brilliantly funny.

"Dreadnought" and its sequel "Battlestations" are famous for being author self inserts. The cover art is even based on the author and her husband. Over thirty years ago in an interview in "Starlog" magazine the author talked about how she and her husband were the basis for the two main characters. These two novels, in my opinion, are the worst of the Pocket Books 1980's Star trek the original series novels. I actually reread them a few months ago and they really are terrible.

I have "Ishmael" and need to read it! I will say it ties in to a few classic western shows I believe, but the main one is "Here Comes The Brides". Look up the cast for the show and you'll see why the writer used the basis of the show for the book!! I looked it up and it also references a few classic sci fi shows like Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica :)
