The Pocket books were far better than the Bantam novels. They still hold up. Don't tell anyone but I am attempting to write one myself. It was def Roddenberry who wrote the book. He was into drink, drugs and... other things by then and it shows in the writing.
@JulesBurt
@JulesBurt 3 года назад
Thanks buddy! I agree the Pocket Books are definitely better reads today and nowhere near as funky as some of those 70's titles. Another vote for Roddenberry, thanks.

Thanks.Cant wait for more.I have most in my collection...The author of the novel? Ican see why some believe its ADF..but i believe its G R. The 'Chekovs Enterprise 'is a fine find and a good read..it has an introduction by Harlan Ellison 😏The guy some sci fi and trek fans "love to hate" lol.Thank You 🖖

I think it’s pretty interesting how for years The Motion Picture was considered one of the “bad” Trek films, but recently it’s sort of been reappraised. Not being old enough to have seen it when it came out (although my dad reminds us every time it’s on cable that he waited in line for hours early in the morning in the cold in Le Mars, Iowa to see it when it came out) I didn’t see it within the context of the insane hype fans must have felt. I think the film could use a bit of a trim-there are definitely sequences that go on too long-but I think it’s pretty terrific, and it’s impressive that they created a film so intellectual after the explosive success of Star Wars, when everyone else was rushing to make “toyetic” sci fi. You’ve got to admire that they stuck to their guns and didn’t dumb it down.
@JulesBurt

I couldn't agree more! It's still a really fantastic film and I totally love it. 🖖

As for Alan Dean Foster : Splinter of the Mind's Eye! Which would have been the alternate follow up to Star Wars New Hope if it hadn't turned out to be such a hit. It introduced the idea of controlling the Force through crystals - the name Kaiburr crystal (in the story Luke had to lift it with both hands) survived as the crystal in lightsabers, and the power source for Death Star superlasers !
@JulesBurt

I feel they get better as the series progresses. The Bantam ones certainly had a particular charm about them though🙂

Regarding Alan Dean Foster possibly writing the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the evidence is actually pretty strong that he wrote it; the movie is based on his story. From the early 1970's until 1978, Foster was adapting Star Trek: The Animated Series episodes into novel collections titled the Star Trek Logs. These collections of story adaptions were published 2 or 3 times a year. Foster was also writing his own original fiction and novelizations to other movies. In 1979, the year of this novelization's release, Foster ONLY published 3 books. Of those 3 books, 2 were novelizations of other movies: The Black Hole and Aliens. Up to this point, Foster was publishing 4 or 5 books a year. But in 1979, Alan Dean Foster ONLY published 3 books. He only admits to having written the novelization to Star Wars because back in the 1980's people associated with Star Wars were giving print interviews saying he wrote it. He didn't let that secret be known, those people did. Now George Lucas has acknowledged Foster wrote the novelization so Foster is able to talk about writing it. With the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, he is probably contractually obligated to not acknowledge he wrote it.

Right, fantastic information, thanks for sharing it. Agree on all points there. Amazing to think he wrote so many movie adaptations. 👍🖖

@@JulesBurt Let's look at Alan Dean Foster's literary output from 1975 until 1983 to get a more precise count of how many books he was writing 4 years BEFORE 1979 and 4 years AFTER 1979. The year 1979 will be included in this count. In 1975, Foster wrote 4 books and 1 short story. In 1976, Foster wrote 4 books and 3 short stories. In 1977, Foster wrote 3 books and 1 short story. In 1978, Foster wrote 2 books and 2 short stories. In 1979, Foster wrote 3 books and 2 short stores. In 1980, Foster wrote 1 book and 0 short stories. In 1981, Foster wrote 3 books and 2 short stories. In 1982, Foster wrote 1 book and 4 short stories. In 1983, Foster wrote 4 books and 1 short story. The key years here are 1978, 1979, and 1980. Foster wrote 1 less book in 1978 than 1979- the year the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture came out. This would seem to indicate that his literary output was decreasing. I believe this decrease in 1978 to be the result of his having to rewrite the opening chapters of Star Wars: Splinter Of The Mind's Eye. A rewrite could have caused a delay in his number of books written which was down 1 book from 1977. The year 1979 saw a 1 book increase from 1978 with the same number of short stories (2) being written as the year before. Foster has said that he writes to finance his world travels. Perhaps traveling was the cause of his small number of books and short stories produced in 1980. In 1975, four years BEFORE the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture was written, Foster wrote 4 books and 1 short story. In 1983, four years AFTER the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture was written, Foster wrote 4 books and 1 short story. Looking at the amount of books Foster wrote per year, Foster could have written the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and still maintained his high output of books and short stories per year. From my knowledge, Gene Roddenberry never "wrote" another novel. Alan Dean Foster wrote a very high number of novels before and after the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture was "written" by Roddenberry. Regarding Alan Dean Foster possibly writing the novelization to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, based on his literary output the evidence is pretty strong that he wrote it.

Chain of attack has bern made into a fan movie here on THEMtube. The sequel the Final Nexus also a favourite. How can one resist such epic tales like traveling through DeSitter space and discovering that a new universe is being impinged upon our own and you get to meet its gods before they even fully exist? All that and a glass spider. K'T'l'k...... As she is known.The Wounded sky deals with the afftereffects of a new instaneous form of transport. Seems turning the universe inside out and back again is more than the fabric of reality can bear. Now that's a story that deserves a feature film, written by Diane Duane.

Does a list with the Star Trek books that were approved by Gene Roddenberry exist ? I have noticed that some people like Star Trek for very different reasons than I do, some view it as a fantasy instead of science fiction, in my opinion the TV series became more fantasy than science fiction after Gene Roddenberry died and more so over the years. The current TV series are unwatchable for me. I also like the episodes by Gene Roddenberry on "Have Gun Will Travel" they were excellent stories about morality.
