E-fuels or sustainable fuels are synthetic fuels produced using renewable energy and CO2 captured from the atmosphere, and so produce no net carbon dioxide emissions when they burned. This video dives deeper into their feasabiltiy in a green economy and why the car company Porsche has invested so much money into the technology.

Great vid. Good discussion points based on technically factual analysis. Thanks. Biofuels are about 1 to 2% efficient in terms of converting the sun's energy into fuel calorific value. Then it needs to be burned in a car that has an engine with a thermal efficiency of less than 30%.

Correction: The real major advantage of efuels is energy density, and thus range. This is why it's of interest to aircraft, as it's probably going to be a while before batteries and hydrogen fuel cells can cross the atlantic or pacific. A relevant point is that efuels and regular fuels can be mixed in a variety of ratios - allowing you to directly reduce net carbon emissions by whatever arbitrary price increase the market will bare. And then increase the ratio as/when scalling effects and new technologies brings the cost down. A minor point is that hydrogen production becomes significantly more efficient at higher temperatures, reducing the cost significantly. Next generation nuclear plants (operating in the 850*C range) are commonly suggested for this.
