ECW legend New Jack passed on Friday and he leaves behind a complicated legacy in pro wrestling. He was as real as it gets, but that sometimes proved to be very bad for his opponents. Solomonster talks about what made him appealing to so many fans, some of his more infamous stories involving Mass Transit and Vic Grimes, and what happened the one time WWE brought him to TV for a tryout match years ago.

One of my favorite underrated New Jack moments has to be in TNA with his odd friendship with Shark Boy. Talking about them playing board games and whatnot. And seeing Jack in there with him and using a pair of Hulk Hands as a weapon was fucking surreal.

10:48 in reference to Vince not wanting Jack and Mustafa to come in for the invasion angle, I recently just saw a shoot interview clip of Francine saying Vince told her that he never watched the original ECW. My guess is that it wasn’t Vince himself that had a problem with Jack, it was someone in Vince’s circle that didn’t want him around.

I’m guessing it had to be Jim Cornette, since he was a member of the creative team in 1997. The Gangstas and Cornette had heat stemming from them leaving Smokey Mountain Wrestling, and New Jack was cutting promos on Cornette in ECW, calling him a racist.

So many people wanna talk about 'blurring the lines, in wrestling'; work/shoot angles, who was most believable in the ring, 'loose cannons', ect. New Jack did/was ALL of that, and more. Was he the best in the ring, was he always safe? No, but the guy didn't need to be. All he needed to do, was his own thing, and he was instantly over. That's something unique, and worth remembering. Regardless, of his "complicated legacy". He made a name for himself, and won't be forgotten, anytime soon. ~R I P~

In a industry where you don't see many real characters, New Jack was a person who you knew he was a monster and his promos were amazing. However, his legacy is very complicated because he did inexcusable things that he should have been into jail. However, on the Mass Transit incident, I put the fault on the kid who lied about his age and had no business wrestling with a dangerous man in New Jack. Along with the kid's father who allowed his son to get messed up in the worst way. Everything about him is fair game. He should have been blackballed, but he wasn't and it speaks more about the wrestling business than anything else.

Hearing about New Jack made me think of what Bill Maher said about the passing of Jerry Falwell: "Death isn't always sad." New Jack was a psychotic, homicidal piece of shit, end of story. The fact that he was so intelligent and able to understand what he did just makes him a bigger piece of shit. I watched his Dark Side of the Ring episode and still couldn't sympathize with the guy. The thing with Mass Transit was sickening, and the Vic Grimes thing is even more appalling to me now because until I watched this video, I didn't know that he made Grimes take that fall in their first match. He blamed Grimes for something that was New Jack's own damn fault! Good riddance to bad rubbish. The world can breathe a sigh of relief that this monster can't hurt anyone else.

This is one wrestler's death I don't care about. The guy is a violent, sadistic sociopath who uses the excuse of playing a character to hide the fact. Good riddance.

A scaffold match is absolutely dangerous. It's not wrestling and it needs to be banned. I didn't watch WCW, but I think they did this more often than WWE. The only scaffold matches in the WWE that I remember (I didn't have cable) was Shane McMahon doing those dangerous 100ft jumps. They need to be done away with. It's not safe, the wrestlers look scared (as they should be, that thing with New Jack and Vic Grimes, was shaking throughout).

I’ve got a lot to say about this. Jerome Young what is a good dude. Attentive father, good cook, and quite a sense of humor. New Jack, the character Jerome Young lived and at all times he was working, was crazy. In every shoot interview and on Darkside he was working. The mass transit incident is overblown, no worse than what Hiro Matsuda did to Hogan‘s leg. And really for the same reason, young dude trying to get in the business who doesn’t know any respect. Two main differences are race and that the fans saw it. It was really no big deal. The cut clearly looks much worse than it actually was. It was just nasty because it bled so much. He might’ve needed a transfusion while he was at the ER getting stitched up. But let’s get real that’s a kid getting taught a lesson not an assault. If anyone is to blame it’s the father for allowing his son to get in that position. You heard New Jack’s version of the Vic Grimes story. I want to emphasize you got the character’s version of the story. Did Jerome actually have homicidal motives? That will always be one of the mysteries of wrestling. He is one of the best workers in the business because he got people to believe the real man is indistinguishable from the character. I’m going to take New Jack’s side on Hunter Red as well. The fact is Hunter what is essentially an untrained fan who shot in the match. He was throwing live rounds, a guy does have the right to defend himself - that doesn’t change because you are in a wrestling ring.

you can approach it from a few angles. he is inspirational for fighting racial stereotypes. (even tho gangsta is one, he had a line he drew that other wrestlers didn't.), and giving relatively more honest interviews like about vince's corruption. and he's a cautionary tale about the excesses in extreme/hardcore wrestling, both in what the violence did to his body, and how it stunted his career when ECW went to WWE. His reputation as the crazy violent one made him an easy scapegoat. But he had talent, not doubt about that. Both in not dying in those stunts and in his promotional skills.
