This is a Concept Video - It is not a step-by-step Video
Since there are dozens of different types of WiFi Video Door Bells - and it is impracticable to buy and test them all - this Video explains the Concept of what needs to be done - to connect a WiFi video door bell to an NuTone Intercom System - which has a built-in Chime Module.
These are NuTone Intercom Systems that were made from 1984 through 2010.
The concept shown in this Video will also work with NuTone fully Electronic Musical Door Chimes made from 1975 through 2008.
It will also work with NuTone 8-Note Long Tube and Short Tube Door Chimes which have a fully electronic chime base.

Thank you for this video. I have been wracking my brain on ideas to get this to work with my 8 note door chime. I kept going to some sort of micro controller to detect the signal. Your video gave me just enough info to be able to just grab a relay and go that route. I really was over thinking this issue.

Wonderful presentation! Reminded me of my days in classes in college. My Nutone 5006 intercom hasn't worked in a long time and I'm really just looking to plug in the Nest Hello doorbell. The secondary transformer inside the Nutone master box is rated at 24 V and 40 VA (watts as you prefer). Couldn't I just plug the Nest to that?

I wish I had seen these videos before I purchased my wife the Ring Pro video doorbell and trying to make it work with our vintage Nutone LA-55. Question I have is: I have installed the Ring Pro and it seems to be working fine. Just not working the LA-55. Is it OK to let it work like this for now? Will it damage the LA-55?

Question: Re the transformer. Does it plug into an outlet or is there a way to it internally from the intercom? The reason I ask is I hate to think there will be a cord coming from the intercom system to an outlet.

Hi Mark, The Transformer for the WiFi camera can go anywhere you want - inside the wall-housing for the Master Station - the Basement - in a closet, wherever you can install it. Then if needed, you run wires to the Camera - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks so much. It turns out that with the Google Nest Camera instead of running it as drawn with wires from one side connecting to terminal/relay and wires from the other side connecting to doorbell/relay the wires on a single side need to connect to transformer and doorbell with the wires on the other side both connecting to the relay. This was incredibly helpful and just made something that two google On Site support reps told me was impossible work perfectly. Thank you!

Very informative video. Thank you. However, why is there a need to keep the old push button for the nutone? Is there a way we can eliminate this and replace with the new wifi doorbell? Response is appreciated.

@northsideservicecompany3567 4 года назад
Hi MYchannel: You certainly could remove the original push button and just connect the WiFi Camera/Relay to the wires that had been connected to the push button - Of course this implies that the entire NuTone Entry Door Station would be removed, which removes the option of answering the Door from the Intercom System. I don't see the advantage in loosing the Door Communication - not everyone has their phone with them around the house at every moments - Chris

I have a Nutone 4406 intercom, I do have extra wires going to both the doorbell and the speaker. Is there a video on how you do it with extra wires? My daughter bought me a ring doorbell and a Echo show for Christmas. I'm 73 years old and want to get it working so my wife and I can see who is at the front door. I live in the S L C Utah area, can you recommend a company who could help me out with the install?

Chris, Great video! It obviously makes a big difference when the presenter has an in depth knowledge about the subject. I am attempting to connect a Hikvision Video doorbell to a M&S Systems Intercom. I followed your instructions to the T. Even the Power Pac that came with the camera is identical to your diagram. Problem is, when I complete the connection to the video doorbell, the relay triggers immediately, and the door chime starts to rings. There appears to be a constant 20VAC across the terminals of the doorbell when it is powered, which is obviously enough to trigger the relay. There doesn’t seem to be a difference when the video doorbell button is pressed. Any suggestions?

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thanks for the reply Chris. I watched the video, and I didn't see much difference that would help me. I am using a 24 VAC transformer, with a 24 VAC relay. I think my relay is the problem. With everything connected, the voltage at the coil terminals is 0.2 volts. When I push the video doorbell button, the voltage jumps to 0.5 to 0.6., but the relay does not engage the contacts. Will the DC relay you recommend in this article work at these voltages?

@@jimdelaney6015 I briefly reviewed the Hikvision installation instructions (not very helpful ) According to their instructions - if you use the Power Module and connect as if you had a "mechanical" doorbell and configure it with their app - it should work. My guess is that you don't have the Power Module wired into the system correctly - using the relay's coil as if were a doorbell coil. As for your relay choice - it the coil of the relay requires more current that the power module can supply - it will not energize correctly. This is why I choose a miniature relay which required only 200mW of current to energize. - Chris

Hi Chris, I used your design for my Ring Pro and Nutone Chime a year ago. It has been working great. I had to replace the relay once. But now the chime shuts off immediately. It plays for maybe 1-2 seconds. If I trigger the doorbell from the 16-volt transformer, the chime plays until I break the connection. If I remember correctly, the relay is supposed the provide enough power, for long enough, to play the whole tune. Do you think my relay is bad? Thank you, Wayne
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 2 года назад
Hi Wayne: What model of NuTone Chime do you have? If it's a LA52 Musical Chime - it requires a diode across the button contacts - the diode allows the Chime to complete the song, once the button has been released - Chris
@waynethorsted6589
@waynethorsted6589 2 года назад
@@northsideservicecompany3567 Yes, it is an LA52. I remember now that there was a diode involved. It would go across LA52 button contacts, not the ring doorbell, correct. Would one of these, MCIGICM 20Pcs 15SQ045 Schottky,15amp Diode Axial Schottky Blocking Diodes, on Amazon work? Not sure what I'll do with the other 19 :-).

@@waynethorsted6589 The Diode must be a 1N4002 - It goes across the Button contacts - not the Ring Camera - The direction of the Diode will be - in whichever direction - that makes the Chime work correctly - Chris

I have watched a number of your videos in the past an appreciate the time you have spent educating us on Nutone servicing. I received a Ring for Christmas and am now in the process of integrating it into my IM4006. I was searching for a relay recomendation as the relay I had selected (DM84-2012-35-5012) is not available through any of the distributors I have looked at. The relay your link goes to at Mouser is a DC relay, and that will not work in this application. I had already considered using the G2R-1A-AC12, available at Mouser for $5.88 and also available at 24 VAC, but was looking for a smaller thru hole solution. My original solution of a full wave bridge across an 11 ohm resistor feeding a DC relay worked, however, it was subject to false tripping. Just installing a relay in series is a more elegant solution, but it does need to be an AC relay. Thanks again for your videos.
@northsideservicecompany3567
@northsideservicecompany3567 4 года назад
Hi Joseph: I'm not sure why you felt the need for the 11 ohm resistor - We have sold many of our Relay / Rectifier Boards and people have reported back to us that they work correctly - Chris
@josephgugel9218
@josephgugel9218 4 года назад
@@northsideservicecompany3567 Hi Chris, My main point was the link to a DC Relay instead of an AC relay. With regard to the resistors, the nominal output of my 12VAC 30VA transformer is 19VAC. The 11 ohm resistor along with a 5 ohm series resistor served as a voltage divider for the bridge rectifier and a current limit during the brief time the ring was shorting the line. The 12 volt DC relay, I was using, had a maximum voltage of about 15 volts. This was the reason for the divider. I plan on using the same scheme for the 12VAC relay (G2R-2A-12AC) as it has maximum 140% over voltage. The problem with my DC approach was the large DC ripple caused by the nominal 170 mA current flowing to power the Ring. I tried to filter it but the constant load of the DC relay prevented it. I won't have an opportunity to play with it for a week or so but will report back with my final solution. On another note, the only thing working on my NuTone, after a lightning surge in the neighborhood, is the Chime. I will be repairing the IM4006 right after integrating the Ring. Thanks again for all your videos, don't believe I will be as ambitious replacing all the capacitors as you were with your woman customer. Everything was working fine up until the surge.

HI and thank you for your video. I watched carefully and think I understand the main concepts... I have a Nutone 3003 master station with a front door speaker and chime button. I opened the master station panel and found a wrinkled sticker referring to a 105T transformer. I also found a transformer next to my main electrical panel that is a 16V-15VAC, I'm just not sure if that transformer as anything to do with the intercom or of it's to power up my home thermostat... Is the transformer of the Nutone automatically inside the master station and part of the board? UPDATE: I can confirm that the transformer next to my electrical panel is the same wire that seems to connect to the terminal board inside the main station where it says door speaker. Do I just replace that transformer for a 24V-40VA...? I don't know what to do next, I want to install the Ring video doorbell Pro. Thanks!

maxliv0308: No - No - No - Do Not install a 24 Volt Transformer to power your IM3003 - You will bow it up in a short amount of time. In the Video I show that you need to install a 2nd Transformer (since your Intercom transformer is the wrong voltage and to small) that is dedicated to powering the Ring Video Door Bell - Chris
