Whenever you get tired of 3k history, I'd love to hear your thoughts on a comparison between Qin, Liu Bei, and Han Xin's attempts to march east.
@SeriousTrivia
@SeriousTrivia Месяц назад
Qin was marching out against six main opponents who did not trust each other and sometimes even fought amongst themselves. Han was marching out against one main opponent that was far away from the west and a litter of smaller opponents who were less than capable and lacked incentive to resist when the going got tough. Shu was marching out against one giant consolidated power that enjoyed the Han's four hundred year of administrative development in the central plains while committing massive amount of resources to keep them in Shu.

I think that one of the factors that could have influenced Sima Zhao's insistence in his grand plan to conquer Shu Han be executed was a desire for glory and personal deeds of conquest to him and to his lineage because even with Sima Zhao's absolute control and dominance over the kingdom of Wei he doesn't had until this time a large tracks of military realizations like his father and brother before him beside the third rebellion of Huainan which could be turned in to a possible weak to his heir,Sima Yan,in terms of glory compared to other members of Sima clan that could use this a justification to invalidate his stake as the leader of the clan that could result in a possible internal conflict for the leadership after Sima Zhao's death.
@SeriousTrivia
@SeriousTrivia 25 дней назад
I mean that can be done with a conquest of Wu as well. The general desire is for unification (because of the glory that comes with that). Chinese people care about history and the chance to leave behind a page in history.

Hi, I hope there's a chance you get to talk about this in a future video. My understanding was that the Yellow Turban Rebellion was a Taoist led group whereas the majority of Han are practitioners of Confucionism. Did the Yellow Turban Rebellion have any impact as to how Taoism was viewed following the rebellion?
@SeriousTrivia
@SeriousTrivia Месяц назад
It's a great question and the short answer is that religion or ideology is viewed much differently in Chinese society compared to how it is viewed in the west. You can be a Taoist believer and follow the principles of Confucianism and even practice a bit of Buddhism all at the same time without any conflicts of faith because these ideologies are not set up like many other world religions. The practice of Taoism also have many sects. So not all Taoist practitioners would be the same. For example, in the same period, you have Zhang Lu and the Five Peck of Rice Taoism sect that was still active. After Zhang Lu's surrender to Cao Cao, he and many of his followers migrated to Ye and spread the Five Peck of Rice sect to the north. By the Jin Dynasty, you have even one of the Eight Princes in Sima Lun being a follower of the Five Peck of Rice. Now here, you have to understand that when you say someone is a follower, it might just mean that they are superstitious and simply believe that following certain taoism rituals will bring them good fortune or cure a sickness. It is not a blind faith. When the rituals work, you bring more incense and more money to the temple to thank the gods and when it doesn't work, you might turn to a different temple or even a Buddhist ritual. Because of this, the Yellow Turban movement was more of a cult following that linked itself to Taoism which extends into many many fields from rituals for weather, for health, for money, for how to governor a country through the idea of balance and not doing, for exorcism, for five phase harmony, for alchemy, for living longer, for how to have sex better, etc. So when the Yellow Turban was put down, the government did not feel like the people were Taoist and therefore were bad, but rather, you have people turning an organized cult into a rebellion. You kind of see how the remaining rebels basically turned themselves into bandits to understand how Taoism was just a mythical banner used by the Zhang brothers to give themselves a sense of divine rather than something that people followed with blind faith.

Finally, the conquest of Shu-Han! Thanks for this lore series. It's sad to see Liu Bei's domain to come to an end. I guess his heir was not the hero his father was nor did he have Zhuge Liang later in his reign. So since even Deng Ai voiced his concerns about this campaign, how was Sima Zhao so sure of its success? After all none had managed to cross the mountains leading to Shu fron the north before and conquer that realm in one strike? Even Zhuge Liang's expeditions were a semi-suceess in the short term
@SeriousTrivia
@SeriousTrivia Месяц назад
I mean military campaigns are not 100% events. Just because you think it’s hard doesn’t mean you don’t try it. Even if this campaign had failed, it wouldn’t have been that bad for Wei.
@MrMage-ds1fk
@MrMage-ds1fk Месяц назад
Kinda sad we are getting to the end, but hey, I want to know more details about this part of the timeline, so its ok. Two questions: 1) "Jiang Wei's 9th and final northern expedition". I thought there were 11 northern expeditions by Jiang Wei? Also, his expeditions in real life and the ones in the novel, are they the same in terms of actions and locations? 2) Why do you say "Cao Pi's semi successful (...) invasion of Wu"? From what I've seen/read, they are considered failed invasions. Also, I hope that when you get to those final episodes you talk about Luo Xian's Defense of Yong'An. I find that event/conflict quite interesting (it could be considered the last clash between the three kingdoms since you have retainers still loyal to Shu, invading Wu and assistance from Wei).
@SeriousTrivia
@SeriousTrivia Месяц назад
1. I would refer you to our Jiang Wei’s northern expedition let’s talk lore series for the answer. 2. Cao Pi’s first invasion of Wu was a mixed result with all three fronts making decent in roads. The western front did get stalled with a siege at Jiangling but the whole campaign eventually ended only because Cao Ren took heavy losses in the center front. The eastern front pushed quite deep pass Guangling

In my early days of fandom for 3K, I always feel heartbroken by the fall of Shu. But as I went through more details, I can’t help but applaud the Sima and Wei for their capabilities. But ST, do you think Jiang Wei is arrogant? I mean from the novels, he showed a lot of disdain toward Deng Ai and Zhang Hui, and often downplay their ability even if Xiahou Ba warned him many times. Or is this purely fiction to paint some negative traits on Jiang Wei?
@SeriousTrivia
@SeriousTrivia Месяц назад
Jiang Wei historically did not seem arrogant towards either party. Deng Ai repeatedly beat him out west and the moment Zhong Hui was assigned to Chang'an, Jiang Wei remembered Xiahou Ba's warning years ago and reported it to the Shu Han imperial court asking for reinforcements but at this point, Jiang Wei was rather unpopular at home so his plea was ignored.

were Zhong Hui and Deng Ai students of Sima Yi, since they have the same word Shi for their style name, or is it something Advisors Alliance made up
@SeriousTrivia
@SeriousTrivia Месяц назад
Shi just mean gentlemen and in the case of style names, the first character is often just a fluff word and for different time period, different fluff word were fashionable. For example you will see a lot 子 Zi being used around this time period too in the case of Zilong or 公 Gong in the case of Gongjin. All three 士 Shi, 子 Zi, 公 Gong are male identifying fluff words. So it does not mean they were both students of Sima Yi. In Deng Ai's case, he was discovered by Sima Yi. Their relationship is like if one of your managers at the company found an intern that he really liked and started to mentor and help that intern. Zhong Hui was born into a very esteemed clan with his father Zhong Yao being a much more respected scholar than Sima Yi, so if anything Zhong Hui would think his clan is even slightly superior to the Sima clan. And given that Zhong Hui was born in 225, it is unlikely that Sima Yi in his more advanced age would ever have much interaction with him.
