I remember the day I finally caved in and bought a Wii U was the day before they announced the Nintendo Switch

I will never get tired of ragging on the Wii U.

The only memories I had with the Wii U was Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. Those were great times, it was a shame they didn’t last that long.

Wii didn't fail, U did though.

Buy a Wii U to make it an Emulator machine.

The Wii U may have failed but atleast it paved the way for the Switch.

You forgot to mention that the Wii U has some better things than the Switch: RU-vid, Netflix, VIrtual Console, Internet Browser and free online play.

The reason the Wii U failed was probably because they failed to advertise the console, they could've found a better use of the branding name like four men coming to someone's house and one of them says "Wii like to play with U," and third-Party developers weren't giving what the Wii U needed to give to the audience. They were very lazy since the Wii U has two screens. Also, I liked the name "Wii U" so they shouldn't change the name of the console.

We just thought it was a mod for the Wii.

I thought this was pretty obvious - you can knock it for being marketed poorly, having a weak launch lineup, lacking third party support, etc., but the simple fact is that no Wii U means no Switch. The Switch really was the refinement on what the Wii U started in terms of console portability. This applies to its game library too. There's a reason half the Wii U library got ported over. The Wii U had some damn good games, some of the best Nintendo have ever featured on their consoles. Smash 4, Splatoon, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Maker, Nintendo Land, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Rayman Legends, Pokken Tournament, just to name a few off the top of my head. Good games are all I really care about, to be honest, and quality over quantity. And look how many of those have either made it to the Switch as a port, or been reincarnated into an improved version/sequel. Being a Wii U owner in the Switch era feels kind of like being a hipster. I'm glad people are finally appreciating these fantastic games for what they are, but it was awesome enjoying them this whole time.

It really is a shame, I absolutely love the Wii U and still play on it to this day. The games were amazing and I also loved the Gamepad, I didn't think it was clunky or ugly, I found it super comfortable! I had so much fun with this console!

People say it had no games...Captain Toad, Mario Maker, Smash 4, COD BO2, Bayonetta 1&2, Batman Arkham City Armored Edition, Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros U, Splatoon, 3D World, Shantae, Shovel Knight, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Tekken, Pokken, Pikmin 3, Hyrule Warriors, Darksiders 1&2, Freedom Planet, Sonic Lost World, Injustice, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Minecraft, Watch Dogs, & more...not to mention the fact that you can play NES, SNES, N64, Wii, Wii U, GBA AND DS games, have media apps, various controller options, and play online for free. Gosh, I love the Wii U.

Wish more people talked about the internet browser on the Wii U. Hands down the best one I've used on any console/handheld. Ended up clocking in well over 1000 hours on it idk how I even managed to do it.

The Wii u wasn't that bad, I had alot of good memories with it! But the tablet was too THICC for me

I don’t regret buying a Wii U based on what we knew back in 2012 since I had a lot of great times with it, but if I had somehow known what the Switch’s library was going to be like, I think I would’ve just waited. It also felt like Nintendo punished Wii U owners by putting out low-effort titles like Mario Party 10, Amiibo Festival, and Ultra Smash. I can see why though. I mean, why put effort into the games if they’re not even going to sell well?

the wii u is a failure? the system that plays mario kart 8, mario maker, splatoon, breath of the fucking wild, and literally every single wii game plus thousands of amazing classic virtual console games and so much more? i never understood this.

This was a good retrospective. My only complaint is that you forgot to talk about one of the only recognizable non-port games - smash 4.

two things the wii u did better than the switch: virtual console and just how comfortable the gamepad is. for the size it is, it's pretty lightweight, and fits in your hands perfectly.

Guess what? I have had my Wii for 7 years and the Wii U for 5 years and the controllers work perfectly fine. My 3yrold switch? *joy con Drift* Couldn’t have the switch contained the same mechanism for the joy sticks than the Wii U? They still don’t drift! Wii U was a good console and I had so much fun, also with the Wii. But the switch is better than the Wii U. Nothing beats the Wii because it has a special place in my heart.

Honestly for what it was, the Wii U is one of my favorite consoles ever. Memories will carry anything hard with nostalgia

the wii u was A GOOD CONSOLE. The marketing just wasn't... great. I LOVE the wii u. and besides, we got splatoon and mario maker. you can ALSO play wii games, might i remind you, which is REALLY useful for peeps like me and my family whos wii just died. its the reason i can play super paper mario, one of my favorite games. youre entitled to your opinion but I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE the wii u! edit: we dont EVEN TALK about the absolute ATROCITY that is paper mario color splash. no unique villains or bosses, and TOO. MANY. TOADS.

Don't even talk about Mario Maker on 3DS, this can't be called a port because it can't do main things full version can: 'make and share levels' and 'support creators, by playing all their levels at very least'. So for Maker you still better to get full version so it remains as good title you'd buy WiiU for, not something that got ported.
