Thanks for highlighting this part of our history. The founder of the Baptist movement's name is pronounced "Lile." The first church he started eventually became East Queen Street Baptist Church. In addition to their goal of spreading the Gospel and abolishing slavery, they wanted to educate black people. As such, the Baptist church started the most schools in Jamaica, the first being Gully School, which is now known as Calabar Infant Primary & Junior High School.

"The biography of the Caribbean", German Arciniegas, loved to talk about "Our Mediterranean" referring to the Caribbean. Following his example I did exactly the same in my recent book: "El Caribe, Siempre el Caribe..." One way or another there is something nobody can deny about this sea of heavenly beauty and its cluster of unmatched islands. Western civilization entered the Western Hemisphere for the first time through the islands of the Caribbean and Sephardic Jews were among the first Europeans to set foot on the soil of the Western Hemisphere, the New World discovered by Christopher Columbus. I am among those that consider Columbus a Sephardi, that is, a Sephardic Jew. Simon Wiesenthal postulates that Columbus was careful to conceal his Judaism. Others have argued that Columbus was a "converso", a Sephardic Jew who publicly converted to Christianity. Another word commonly used was "Marrano", a Jew living in the Iberian Peninsula who converted or was forced to convert to Christianity, many of whom continued to practice Judaism in secret. In the Caribbean Sephardic Jews were sometimes known as "Portugals" or Portuguese because they originated there or settled in that country after the expulsion of 1492. My favorite Spanish historian, Don Salvador de Madariaga, one of the xxth century's most prominent Spanish statesmen and a former professor at Oxford University describes Columbus' Jewish roots in what I consider an almost definitive biography: "Vida del Muy Magnífico Señor Don Cristóbal Colón". The presence of a good number of "conversos" in Columbus' ship is described by José Amador de los Rios in his "Historia Social, Política y Religiosa de los Judíos de España y Dortual" That ic alen tha aninian of Cimon Wincanthal in bic baol, "Coile of Lano.

A good video. The sad part of Jamaican history, similar to the other territories that experienced slavery, is that an impression was created that Christianity is a white religion. Yet, Judeo-Christianity was present in parts of Africa thousands of years before Christianity even became established in Europe. Other parts of Africa were similar to pagan Europe

it is quite ignorant when I see comments like this ....... dont you understand that Africa is huge continent spanning 1000s and 1000s of miles , and EAST African places that had christianity at that time Ethiopia , Egypt ,,,, are light years way from west Africa where is where if you are Jamaican your ancestors come from . the africans that were enslaved taken to Jamaica were mostly from the Ashanti tribe and practiced the Akon religion ...... would you like to guess how the were introduced to christianity ..........it certainly wasn't the Ethiopians and Egyptians separated by thousands of miles and a desert .....what you think they had jet blue 600 years ago, no , there is no evidence of any contact between these people at that time ( west coast Africa and east coast Africa ) ...... its not debatable or contested , it is well documented , my ancestors ( much like all slaves brought to Brazil , the carribean and the Americas ) were forced to stop speaking their native languages and native religions , and were forced to take on the christian religion by their slave masters . this is an uncomfortable fact for many to grasp because we still practice that religion today ,,,and I understand that ,,,,,still you can not just change history to make it fit what makes us feel better in 2024 , what happened happened and we need to respect that .
@Rockjamify
@Rockjamify Месяц назад
@@dope03pope I fail to see your point, as I made mention of East Africa as having a Judeo-Christian influence, then compared other parts of Africa to Europe when it was pagan. Not surprisingly, some sources see migration from eastern Africa as responsible for the west and southern populations. The Lemba tribe in Zimbabwe, have strong Hebrew traditions. Speaking of slavery, the Arabic/Muslim tribes of northern Africa were the first recorded slavers, regularly raiding across the Sahara to capture west Africans. This practice is still in existence today, for eg., one will hear of Boko Haram taking captives to sell. Don't get me wrong, plantation slavery was an atrocity, and there is no way to make it seem insignificant, but why didn't the pagan dieties save their worshippers from slavery?

I find it veeery interesting that the indigenous Rastafari movement bearly got a mention. Typically, we tend to ignore our own and promote everything and everyone else. All the religions that you talked about were complicit in colonizing the minds of Jamacians and in instilling the self hatered, arrested development, low self esteem, stranger worship (foreigners are better, richer, more beautiful - bleaching phenomenon etc)that continues today. For example violence is mostly perpetrated on fellow Jamacians, and rarely on visitors. The Rastafari movement that taught and stood for self value, self esteem, our history and our future IS ALWAYS overlooked. And I am not talking about dreadlocks hair - because people have a tendency (through ignorance) to conflate dreadlocks and Rastafarians. Yet Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley, Reggae music -- integral and essential to Jamacian's international prominence and recognition globally emerged through Black Consciousness. Yes colonized minds and William Lynch Syndrome continues to preserve and disperse the toxic poison that we administer to ourselves.😭😭😭
