Short answer: No. Long answer: Saying China is going to take over Jamaica ignores the fact that its economy has recently been growing to historic levels. I've been hearing stories of doomsday ever since the N-S highway was being constructed, with the same critics saying China is gonna line the entire highway with hotels and businesses only Chinese will use (which makes no sense on its own given the steep and rocky terrain the highway crosses). These days most of the infrastructure projects China is doing in Jamaica are going towards the big towns and cities (places that actually NEED the development), and the hotels being built are where the tourist resort areas traditionally lie. In other words, they are constructing projects people actually want. I've even seen the PM make statements during the Montego Bay Perimeter Road ground breaking ceremony outlining how the project will be managed, and how Jamaicans should be treated during this; despite CHEC being the main contractor. The fact that the government still has the influence to manage major projects is a sign that China is not gaining control over Jamaica. The countries that are ACTUALLY in danger of being influenced by China are those - like Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Sri Lanka - that blew their funding on exuberant projects that have since flopped. Those countries are currently struggling to recoup their debts and are at risk of having valuable assets taken by China. Jamaica by comparison does not have this problem, since most if not all of its projects have been successful, and its overall debt per GDP is falling steadily. What Jamaica needs to do, and what I SEE it trying to do, is to continue diversifying its economy so more local people can notably benefit from its growth.

I don't see the Chinese oppressing any body they have helped, unlike our European counterparts. I watched a documentary that said we asked Europe to build the highways and they said they couldn't, but the Chinese said they could.
For decades Jamaica borrowed millions from the US for the highway and it never got done or paid back the loan. More than 10 yrs it sat unfinished due to corruption. The only country left to help was China, but they don't loan money without assurance of payback, hence the toll. The US recently gave $30M USD for security, so we'll see how Jamaica uses it and if crime and scamming goes down.
@waitaminute2015 The hospitals uses the ambulances. My mom was transported from one hospital to the other in one and we didn't pay a cent for it. When it comes to home visits, that I am not sure of because most people bring their sick loved ones to the hospital in private vehicles.

People don't know a lot of things about what is going in Jamaica, and a lot of that is being used by the media to instill fear and confusion. What people don't know is that the Jamaican government is actually able to fund these projects themselves now, and these projects get more and more elaborate as time goes on. Jamaica has reached a point where they are able to fund the development of the Northern Coastal Highway Expansion project (the most expensive planned infrastructure development on the island to date) and to even build towns from the ground up (Morant Bay Urban Centre, Boundbrook Urban Centre and possibly one for Negril). But no, they ignore all that and continue to bring up the N-S highway for the trillionth time like it still means anything; while we're seeing towns and communities being built right before our eyes with massive highways to connect them all.

So, in the past the poor was given God and religion and told to get on with preparing themselves for 'the next world ; life after death, while the rich enjoy life in this world. You bought some good awareness of the loan arrangement between Jamaica and China. Still, based on your headline, you didn't answer the question you asked because you didn't provide any clear metric for us to determine the magnitude of the Debt owed to China. A good way to quantify the debt would be to measure it against the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) so we can get a better visual of it and be in a better position to determine just how much indebted we are.
In these videos, it would be good to understand other debts with other institutions/countries. I find it strange that it is almost never compared to debts by other lenders. For instance. Sri Lanka. In many western media, particularly US corporate media, they talk about debt owed to China and they do this without mentioning other debt, or even the percentage of debt owed to China. We had to dig to find out that China owned less than 10% of the total debt and the lion share are by US & UK based entities such as BlackRock. In fact, we found out that Sri Lanka also own 10% of the total debt. Another thing never mention are the interest rates on their loans and the ability to restructure when necessary by the borrowing country. Western lender interests are often at least twice than of the Chinese, IF the Chinese loan came with any interest attached to it at all. Western lenders, also almost never allow restructuring. They prefer the country to default so they can demand more from the country.

Very good information and you raise a lot of my concerns. The Jamaican government needs to get professional help in analyzing these contracts with China before signing them. I truly believe that the Jamaica government is way over their heads in the negotiations. It should be a monetary contract without given away Jamaica sovereignty and natural resources.

There are and should be concerns around any loans Jamaica takes on. Jamaica suffered greatly under loan agreements with the World Bank and IMF. let’s not forget. For instance the highways, I believe the agreement is that they will be collecting revenue for the next 50 years and are required to properly maintain the road until then. We (the public) have heard of tracks of land given to the Chinese but nowhere has anyone shown concrete land transfer contracts. Also, nowhere is there evidence presented that shows the terms of the highway construction contracts which would allow a reasonable person to conclude that Jamaica got a raw deal. I am not suggesting that these Chinese companies don’t have an unfair advantage in their business dealings with Jamaica which could result in compromising our sovereignty, but your video does not document this, and to the extent that you were unable to do this the video only promotes speculation and conspiracy theories. My question to all the critics. Who the would provide this major infrastructure , not the USA, certainly not Canada. How much per mile, I can say it is not cheap. The Chinese will only take what you allow them to take, they are savvy business people, so should Jamaican when dealing with them are any other. The tool 50 years term I think is fair, it’s a business no extension. If the Jamaican Government allows the Chinese to complete control of The Ports that’s c foolish. It does not matter how poor a person is if he has something that a rich person needs the rich will pay the asking price. I do not think Jamaica is asking for the right thing/price to become independent.
The question is will Jamaicans allow it, we were never a submissive people, our ancestors the ancient maroons of slavery would be ashamed. I dont mind foreign investment but, doing it to gain influence and control over its people is another story.
