The Black album may not be thrash and I Iove and grew up on the thrash era Metallica, but My Friend of Misery is one of Metallica's best non thrash era songs on that album in my opinion. Kirk's Unforgiven solo IS BOB ROCK. Bob pushed Kirk and you can even see the video on youtube, he pushed Kirk because he KNEW Kirk could pull off a perfect solo for that song, and that he did.

I was 11 when the black album came out. By that time I was listening GnR, Nirvana, Maiden etc The black album blew me away. That was the album that got me into heavier music and into forming my first band, which incidentally is still going to this day. It was Lars that made me want to be a better drummer. Through the Never oooft what a tune. For me the better tunes on that album are the lesser known ones. Essential listening. I first saw them on the Escape From The Studio tour while they were recording Load in 1995 I was 15, at Donington Park. Also my first Festival. I’ll be seeing them twice at Donington Park this year at Download, I’m 43 🤘🏻 Keep up the good work.

I wouldn't say that "We were too set in our ways back then." More along the lines of you didn't want Metallica to change or evolve which is unfortunately the case with quite a few commenters I've seen. Metallica knew what was going on with heavy metal in general with the growing popularity of the grunge bands that were building their fanbases, and they felt like they had finally hit a brick wall with the thrash metal formula. Hell, James Hetfield himself said in an interview that they knew that there were other bands that were doing what they were doing, but could play much faster, and felt like they had hit a wall with thrash metal.

The problem with the Black album though is that it appealed to millions of girls who just loved Nothing Else Matters which is the most un-Metallica song they wrote. They couldn't care less for their thrash heritage. Although a great song it was an anomaly. When they felt the backlash from their original fans myself included who actually bought KEA when it came out (I was 17 at the time), they went back to their thrash metal roots thank goodness!

Most artists are allowed to grow, branch out, evolve - go where their creative process takes them. Metallica seems to be the most criticized for doing that. You can't stay young and angry forever. While I have loved the first 2 albums since they were released, I don't listen to them anymore - only live versions of the songs because James' voice is so much grittier with age. The Black Album is like the gateway drug into metal but there is a lot of substance there! I remember so many people angry about it but I thought it was (and is) a fantastic record front to back.

Thing is with Metallica. They were willing to evolve with the changing forecast of rock and metal. The other thing is they gained more new fans with the Black album. Some people say that bob rock forced them to do this. but they wrote the songs on justice tour, and looked for bob rock to shape the songs this way. Bob said he thought they wanted an AJFA 2.0 and when he heard the tapes with the songs he said wow that's different. Bob took a lot of crap and he did just what they wanted him to do. Produce a great heavy metal album. and the fact that the album even before any remaster sounds better than some records made today it's a testament to the hard work they put into it. The success of that record was like winning an Oscar. Gave them lifelong prestige. I also appreciate that they evolved and grew up. That album shows a lot of their musical maturity at the moment.

Metallica don't owe anyone anything. It's their music, and they can do what they want. There's no "Thrash code" that has to be stuck to. No council of metal that needs to approve albums - no matter what all the butthurt purists say. The Black Album was groundbreaking in terms of production and guitar tone, and the songs were all much deeper due to the tempered pace. This is only bad if you assume that fast=good, which is quite the immature take. There are albums of theirs that I absolutely despise, but that's my issue - not theirs.

Yes, they adapted to the market and became the most commercially successful band. I don't see anything positive in that. They chose to make music for money instead of passion. It took me 20 years to acknowledge that the Black Album is a really good metal album. It's not a thrash album, but I listen to more genres of metal than thrash, so I don't care if it's thrash or not. The biggest issue with that album for me now is that it got overplayed. I never had to even play the album for myself to have heard it a thousand times already, and I would be happy to never hear Enter Sandman again. My buddy at the time bought it on release and we ran to his place to listen to it. We were shocked. I remember just thinking how dumbed down and simplified it was, even the lyrics just seemed so silly contrasted to AJFA. But my biggest issue came with the new found fan base of latcher-ons and posers, who just liked Metallica now because they were all over the radio. I met tons of people who loved that album, but wouldn't give any other metal bands a chance. I started getting annoyed because whenever someone would look at my huge metal collection they'd always ask "Do you have any Metallica?" I got so tired of hearing it that I sold all my Metallica so they'd stop with only wanting to listen to my Metallica. I remember I just really started to hate Metallica's new fan base and not wanting to be associated with it, so that's also why I distanced myself from Metallica. Plus, I was still young and pissed off, I was 20 when the Black Album came out, and I still wanted all my music to be just as angry and pissed off as I was, and Metallica just weren't anymore. Same thing happened with Judas Priest in 1986 with Turbo. That was the album that made me stop listening to Judas Priest for 20 years. If Metallica didn't want to play fast, aggressive music anymore, there were plenty of bands coming out that did, there were other options. Plus Death Metal was really starting to emerge as a scene and I started listening to bands like Entombed, Carcass, Obituary. I was also into Fear Factory, Machinehead, Biohazard, Sick of It All, Slayer, Sepultura, Madball, Agnostic Front, Cathedral, Danzig, The Rollins Band etc.

Hysteria came out when I was in junior high I think and I noticed that the girls were really getting into them. Hence they followed up “And Justice” with a full album, 74 minutes of slowed down music with more ballads. It wasn’t a master plan. It’s the best example of selling out you can find. No buddy, you got that wrong: Metallica didn´t plan the Black Album because of Grunge. The idea came around 89, influenced by Def Leppard´s Histerya and yes, even Thriller by Michael Jackson, as they wanted Crossover success, and those 2 were super big crossover hits. The Black Album was released almost a full year before Nirvana broke big. Also, the hate and obvious fatigue of the Hair metal Glam thing was a factor. Another factor: Guns n roses showed that it was possible to do real heavy music. be successful with the masses and not follow the Glam route. Why was it such a success? many factors for sure, but one of them was that this made metal "safe" for consumption by the masses who bought at Walmart, etc. And coming from the band with the impeccable credentials of being the originators of Thrash.

Even if Metallica hadn’t crossed over to the mainstream they were still a very huge band. They could’ve actually been doing headlining arena gigs just several months after Puppets came out. When they were opening for Ozzy supporting that record the fans were there to see Metallica, not Ozzy and many fans were splitting right after Metallica’s set all across those shows in America. Cliff’s death only delayed the inevitable of Metallica’s domination. The new fans that loved that Black album and practically knew nothing of their Thrash era were poseurs as far as I was concerned 😂. As selfish as it was, Metallica was OURS, and for a lot of us old school fans we felt disappointed and left behind. I do have an appreciation for the Black album now that my sense of tastes in music has had a long period of maturation. But when the Black album came out I was an 18 year old Thrash head,😂 and I hated that Black album. I thought it was just cheesy and was not a “Metallica” record. Thank God for PanterA’s breakthrough soon after to quell the pain and crisis hardcore Metal fans felt from losing OUR BAND, Metallica. 😂😂

The Black Album was the album you could put on at parties and people enjoyed it. Your average person does not want to hear Disposable Heroes or Fight Fire with Fire at a big party. It kills the mood. The Black Album turned sooooo many people on to heavier music. I dont listen to it as much, but its still a stone cold classic.

I remember clearly when it came out: it made Metal the lord of all media. BUT... I hated it. It felt like your girlfriend sleeping with your best friend, it felt like being punched in the stomach, off guard. It felt like a betrayal. I like that record now but it took me like 5 years to like it. I can understand intellectually why they did that. But man... I also resented that every interview they gave during those years, when pressed to comment on the issue, they were obviously evading or lying. Oh well. Then they released Load and Reload. Same story. I spent the 90s listening to old metallica. Metallica didn´t plan the Black Album because of Grunge. Another factor: Guns n roses showed that it was possible to do real heavy music, be successful with the masses and not follow the Glam route. Why was it such a success? many factors for sure, but one of them was that this made metal "safe" for consumption by the masses who bought at Walmart, etc. And coming from the band with the impeccable credentials of being the originators of Thrash.

I read the lyrics on Lulu and it was the most degenerate and distasteful, meaningless drivel i read in my life, no wonder no one wanted to help that degenerate write it, until Metallica for some Odd reason. If you have any sense of common sense you see these lyrics was written by a disturbing man, if you are an adult you see why that ain't cool. It's one thing a lot of Thrash is over the top BS fantasy theme from horror movies and such, but Lue Reed is basically what we could potentially seen on an actual wall of a demented serial killer... It wasn't even written good, it was messy, the themes disturbing and sick... Why Metallica? There is no way to prove that. Metallica fans were foaming at the mouth for new Metallica at that time. It was 3 years since the last release and Metallica was going to explode no matter what. Sure making more radio friendly songs helped sell more but the lines of fans that purchased it in the first few months were not the fans that came along because of Enter Sandman. This album all but killed thrash metal in the 90s. Every band attempted in one way or another to imitate this new radio metal sound and frustrated the fans and pointed them to other genres of metal. Sure Metallica stayed popular but all the others struggled once they started to chase after this sound. This was Metallica's first album to be loaded with weak songs. There are a few great ones but so many are just filler unlike previous albums. Everyone talks about how Grunge was on the rise. Nirvana was the first major success in that scene with its release of Nevermind on September 24th 1991 while Metallica's black album was released more than a month before that so there was 0 influence from that genre on why they made this record.

as somebody who still all these years later adores their first 3 albums above all else in their catalog i would personally have to say i think 'black album' is the most overrated album in metal history. imo 'enter sandman', 'sad but true' and 'into the never' are the only truly great songs on it the rest is mediocre at best. tbh, i actually think their last 3 are better than the 'black album'. maybe my ass is just still hung up on 'kill em' all' i suppose that diagnosis could be correct. either way great vid as always very well done and researched.

I do understand why and how this album became so huge but I just don't like the album. I lost all interest in current Metallica albums until Death Magnetic. The deal for me in not liking the album when it came out was that it was TOO much of an evolution from ...Justice. I wish they had put out something else in '91 that wasn't so commercial but hey ...that's history. I don't hate Metallica for it. I just won't willingly listen to any of the songs on the album lol Enter Sandman is a great song for sporting events ...there's no active sports matches at my house or in my car though. Imo the real reason they stopped making thrash music: cliff died and I think he was such a big contributor to the songwriting process on the early albums. Ajfa seems like they tried to keep going but they just ended with long songs that seemed to bore the audience live (James spoke about this and why they started doing a justice album medley instead of whole songs). I think what cliff brought to the game with his deep knowledge of music theory is what got them those epic bridges and middle sections that haven't been the same since he died. Rip cliff.

I love their pre-Black album stuff and, personally, think they sold out. The Black album sucked because it was like a giant middle finger in the face of us fans that were behind them from the beginning when they still hadn't gotten "big" so to speak. Now, that said, I don't blame them. Being set for life financially would probably cause me to sell out as well! But, using the excuse that metal was dying is some crap. Pantera proved that wasn't the case in the strongest era of grunge. Plus, bands like Slayer stayed true to their fans and still were kicking ass when they finally called it quits. Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, etc are still going. Other hard/thrash bands have come after Metallic changed their tune and been successful. So, don't use that as a cop out. They wanted the fame and the fortune so just be honest about it. It's their careers and lives and they're free to do as they wish but I don't have to like it or keep buying that garbage they now call their music. Now, flame on!
@TokusatsuGamingfan
@TokusatsuGamingfan Год назад
It wasn't about "being set for life financially" dumbass. And using the "excuse" as you call it that metal was dying is definitely not "some crap." I always love to see what asinine excuses people like yourself come up with to justify why you think that Metallica shouldn't have changed or evolved by taking risks by not sticking to what everyone else in the metal world was doing. I also have to wonder if you even bothered watching the damn video. A lot of other bands went into a hiatus when the grunge revolution happened, and Metallica saw that because they saw what was happening with the grunge movement at the time. "Other hard/thrash bands have come after Metallica changed their tune and have been successful, so don't use that as a cop out." Yes, other bands after Metallica changed their sound and have been successful, because guess what? THEY WERE INFLUENCED BY METALLICA!! They had to change their sound as well as also had to have help with writing shorter songs which just got to the point which was the whole intention for The Black Album to begin with. The main reason why Pantera got big during the height of the grunge era was because they worked their asses off to get to where they were at that time. "OMG, METALLICA DIDN'T KEEP DOING THE SAME EXACT THRASH METAL STUFF THAT I LOVE AND PUT OUT THE SAME STUFF OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!" SELL OUTS! THEY SHOULDN'T TAKE RISKS!!" That sounds exactly like you and a good chunk of the people in the comment section.

If you dont like it, you dont like it but Metallica is a gateway drug... sure you can stay with just them and enjoy the ride but you keep listening and especially nowadays with streaming services Metallica puts so many younger people onto metal and thrash and they discover bands they would have never heard of. I would argue the vast majority of metal bands owe a portion of their success to Metallica. They are really one of the last great singular gateways to an entire genre.
