Thank you for covering Rule of Rose, not just the real life controversy based on FALSE information spreading (in the age before the Internet), but also the game's story that leaves you feeling dirty, confused, sad, and haunted long after the final credits have rolled.
I honestly wanted this game to not get the bad reputation it got all thanks to the Italian Press. And there are talks about this game getting a remaster, and I hope it gets released on multiple consoles because I want to play this game.
Let's hope the fighting mechanics get some improvements, if it is getting remastered. As this game is the best example of "Lord of the Flies, but with girls," perhaps the game's story could be integrated into curriculums (maybe college, bit heavy for high school; although heaviness doesn't stop some teachers), and a remaster could bring the game into a more receptive spotlight.
Or report on "Shocking! Unknown! Mechanic Only Found Years After the Game's Release" Gamerant or whatever it's called has been full of "Look! Stardew Valley player carries recycling bin when fishing" and other "Players are just learning about" articles recently enough that my news feed for games has had several just lining up almost back to back. Not everything needs an article about it.
Finding two kids rubbing noses as sexual says more about the ones perceiving it that way than the creators of the game and those who enjoy the game. An Eskimo kiss is the term used for rubbing noses. Mostly, it's loosely based on the Inuit tradition of something called a kunik. It's a form of affection for family members and close loved ones. Inherently - non sexual. And just a fun form of affection for someone else.
I literally cannot stress enough how much I’ve been wanting more people to talk about rule of rose, it was a game that really left me super empty feeling and genuinely shocked by it all- and I even got to play a bit of the demo on a old cd in a gaming magazine
Considering the events in the game are kind of like a dream, I don't think it's that strange (in hind sight) that Jennifer faints so much. I mean, in my experience dream events cut in and out all the time, the 'fainting' is probably like the brain trying to come up with a new scene from her tattered memories. P.S. I LOVE Fatal Frame! The lore in the series is so deep and intense that I always wished I could find a deep-dive story summary for any one game, let alone the entire series. I look forward to new content!
I remember watching pewdiepie play this game 😭. The story confused me so much then, and now to have you doing a video on the story??? This is how people felt discovering gold huh
What hell? This game was tame compared to some of the other stuff out there. Dark and twisted, yes, but nothing pitch fork and torches worthy. Gaming journalists just love stirring up shit for no reason and most of the time they don't even play video games themselves, but they know how certain sects of society feel about gaming and they play on that aspect.
I still laugh when I think about someone's five year old nephew (I think) was able to get past the Cuphead tutorial than a full grown adult journalist.
Dark fantasy, slow-burn, mythpunk-like, mystery thriller psychological horror that was, and hopefully will be, one of a kind. There have been a few videos explaining this underrated game before, not just the story but also the real-world issues surrounding it's release and review. It's always good to hear another person explain everything in record time, without backlash from the oversensitive media conglomerates!
This game was one of the first games I felt compelled to finish for the story and because I found it relatable to my experience of leaving and then returning to an elementary school. The hierarchy and trying to regain favor because kids came up with all sorts of rumors about why you moved and left them so you deal with bullying. Even from an ex best friend. Glad I still have it and the soundtrack.
One of my favourite games, ever since when, in 2006, I saw it on the cover of a magazine, with the title "Bury the girl alive" and a whole article about how eerie and controversial the game was. I was 10, and I was hooked.
I feel like Lord of the Flies comes to mind when I think of this game, maybe not in a sense of sexual abuse, but certainly in a sense that innocence is lost and about the dangers that await when children are left to their own devices and not given proper guidance (or none at all) from adults.
An argument could also be made for a comparison between Brown and the conch shell: non-human but very important to the characters, and destroyed during a moment of unbridled anger that marked an inability to thematically and emotionally go back. Or maybe Brown and Piggy. Anyways: yes, lots of parallels between the two.
I tried playing this game, but since the combat is so frustrating I end up dropping it LOL. But thank you for covering this. I heard about how sad the story was, that was why I picked this up (I don't know about the controversy), but since I was unable to finish it, I don't know the whole story. Thank you for explaining what has really happened.
So, it's adults who refuse to utilise reading capacity is running products down in infamy... Maybe they shouldn't allow to work on such positions, anymore.
I hope you know how much we all love your videos! Loved this one, especially since it's for a game that usually flies under the radar :D can't wait for more
Your playthroughs and narrations are truly exceptional, bringing games to life in a captivating way. Your channel is a treasure trove of gaming knowledge and excitement, and I eagerly anticipate your exploration of the Project Zero/Fatal Frame series. 🤘
I am not a big gamer, but I like watching and listening to you explaining video game lore; honestly I don't know how you do to keep up and understand these stories. It's relaxing, and like you are getting a story to bed 😅😊keep up with the good work. I love your videos.
Still one of my favorite games from the Ps2 era. Despite the combat controls being a struggle, I always loved the mysteries and the dream logic of the game. I always chalked up the clunky controls to Jennifer being a scared and frail school girl, so I figured it added a layer to her character that she wasn't some master of clobbering things. If there were a remake, I would love this game to get its due. So much beauty lost to controversy and lies.
I remember when I saw this in a shop and got curious at the peculiar cover, back when that was a thing. No swords, no sorcery, no dragons, no dungeons--just a flowers and little girls, and the outline was something unheard to me. I judged it as a "horror" game and left it, because I suck at horror games. Had I discovered this when I was older, and if it didn't handle like crap, I probably would've played it. I actually find violent video games quite therapeutic; they help me deal with my anger in a controlled and safe manner. Anger caused by others constantly trying to think for me and tell me what I'm supposed to find acceptable. Caused by the world rotting around me, thanks to the same brand of people running it into the ground as they pretend they're saving it. Censorship is evil; and I'm thankful that despite living in a religious country, there was never any enforcement body for video games.
Poor Rule of Rose, it got done dirty by idiots whom couldn't even do proper research. Great game and even though the combat is terrible, story makes up for it by a lot.
Thank you Gaming Harry!🙌🏾 Yet another awesome story explained. Could you do Bad Parenting, it’s short so it might not be worth the edits, but doesn’t hurt to ask.
*trigger warning* I genuinely believe, as a child, the sight of joshoua (wendy) controlling and using gregory as a dog what what makes me like dominating older men...
A LOVE SUICIDE Rule of Rose Main Theme Lyrics: Say where is my shame When I call your name? So please don't set me free I'm as heavy as can be I will do you harm I will break my arm I'm a victim of your charms I want to be dead When I am, I lament I can be so mean You can beat me I would like to shame you I would like to blame you Just because of my love to you And love itself is just as innocent as roses in May I know nothing can drive it away Though love itself is just as brief as a candle in the wind And it's greedy just like sin Alone but sane I am a love suicide 'Cause love itself is just as brief as a candle in the wind It is pure white just like sin Alone but sane I am a love suicide 'Cause love itself is just as innocent as roses in May It is pure white just like sin
this is one of the examples of game reviews that is not taken seriously and the journalist did not even consider playing the game first. Honestly, journalists should not be allowed to review games coz they do not really take time to play the game to give some serious honest article, it even costs the jobs of the devs who created the game. Did more damage than help, should've sued the journalist as well.
Kermit Flappy Hands for the video too!!! Ah yes! Max Payne Mythical Pull. Apparently I’ve got a lot to say: those girls doing nose kisses is so normal to me. It’s what I did with my siblings and even good friends! I think some people don’t know how children interact sometimes, and then they overreact. I have more to say, sorry guys: so I think that this game got the treatment that that old game got. The one where it’s a man and he’s a “serial k1ller”, and he has to take out people that the voices tell him. And people IRL said that it would make people violent. I think this game got the same treatment, which is wrong. Video games don’t mimic reality, just like books don’t. It’s a fantastical experience that can be troubling, but also eye opening. I hope it makes sense what I typed, I get very invested in things like this.
I love the videos. I was wondering if you would cover the crackdown series. I just replayed Crackdown 2using backwards compat and I feel like there is a really interesting story behind what the game shows you if you findall the audio logs but its quite confusing and you are great at helping clear stuff up.
oh dude on the topic of older awesome horror games. The Clock Tower series is one that will live on in my memories forever! but i loved this one as well
I like how Harry is holding himself mentally back with all the emotional might that he has not to call the elderly politicians the proper name they deserve.
I wish that i never traded mine in but I'm my defense the combat was terrible but everything else was chef's kiss. I am still amazed that someone went to the people that made Chulip a cute and cartoony game with social commentary and said "make this horror game about bullying and other social commentary."
Not gonna lie, that's triggering. The fact the studio didn't even get a fair chance and they had to close down. Even if the game is good or bad, that should been the determination. Not some stupid game journalists spreading lies.
I still love they kept the original Japanese in katakana om every western version of the game. Also more weird the American version is still more rare than the European version
Dang.. This game is a horror.... Being played around by the children and cant do anything other than passing out.. But yea, everything is just a nightmare of the past of her being bullied...
I was thinking when you said you were on a hunt to play and cover rare older games, I definitely think you’ll like ObsCure and ObsCure The Aftermath. They’re not that special and the stories are that in depth, but I think you’d like them, especially if you like Resident Evil. And luckily they are on Steam now, so it’s easier to play them than they once were (though Aftermath has some bugs during boss battles, so I’d watch out with that one).
Omg when people cover my favorite game I'm so excited!! I wish I could afford it because I have a ps2 still but I can't and the combat is too tedious but the story is brilliant and the beautiful classic music. There's nothing like it and it desperately needs more attention so they know we need it rereleased
there is an old ds game called theresia which has the same vibe as rule of rose if you'd like to look into it dear martel came to first on mobile then was moved to the ds
Okay, so I'm really glad I googled this game before watching this video, I'm afraid I'll have to skip this one, I literally can't deal with the horror of [SPOILER ALERT!!!!] a sweet doggo getting beaten to death. I'm sure it's a great video, but I'll catch you next time Hazzer
