I once sparred with a tall big guy, who could block any attack I threw and had better reaction time than mine. I wanted to hit him but I couldnt until I remembered your one video where you showed the overhand right against a big guy so I tried just before our sparring ended, I took a step slipped where he was expecting a body punch or straight and punched him right where he couldnt even notice it, it was amazing I could go against such a big guy with such a simple move

Stepping in with the right decreases the momentum by reestablishing a center of gravity and consequently brings one into the clinch. Not stepping in grants more force by shifting the center of mass under the shoulders, though subsequently needing readjustment after the strike to maintain balance. I love these videos.
@mateus8676
@mateus8676 Год назад
Basic physics says this is wrong because force is really just a measure of a change in momentum of a certain mass over time, and you will never have more force standing stationary and punching as opposed to getting a running start and striking. It's the same reason why a car crash at 5 mph does less damage than at 60 mph despite the car having the same characteristics such as weight And yes you do step with the front AND rear foot when closing to strike because you will hit nothing but air if you don't... people aren't punching bags you know

@ZaZa-kp9gt
@ZaZa-kp9gt 5 лет назад
I almost always set it up with a pivot to the left so the over hand right can’t be seen till it’s rattling behind the opponents ear. Works well faking the jab, turning it into a left hook to the body and the over hand right then comes round the corner like a tenth of a second after the body shot lands. Another great way to land it.

This is so cool, i've been training on my own for a while. Now ive started going to a boxing gym and the training there is poor. i found a guy who does 1:1 training for £15p/h and he's showed me the technique for this punch and uppercuts which i havent been throwing on my own on a heavy bag. It's a new technique and so it feels weird and i have to figure it out. It hurts my back or wrist or i feel off balance trying to follow his instructions without using my brain to throw what feels right. So now im practicing alone to get the feel for it and i can come here and get some further input. What you said about "throw it like a straight right but you're leaning to the side so you will naturally get an arc" makes total sense to me and it's just clicked how my hand and arm should feel throwing at that angle. Boxing is exciting! You can figure stuff out like a puzzle but the pieces are your own body :) Love it Thanks for these videos!

The baseball analogy is for a chopping right like Patterson and Hearns Where the forearm points skyward when fully loaded.Then the hand comes down and to to left just like a pitcher on the follow threw. In an overhand right the elbow stays behind the hand the entire time, bending at the waist and leaning toward the left develops a whipping/clubbing motion to the arm and usually results in a natural stance switch. The follow through the to a chopping right will still keep range because the arm stays between the opponents where an over hands usually ends up behind the opponents shoulder and not impeding the forward momentum bring the striker in close. In MMA Habib N. used this strike perfectly vs Conor M disguised as a shoot.

1. like throwing a baseball, over their hand and hit their ear area 2. when their jab is touching you, throw it. don't have to step forward if touching you 3. throw it while stepping forward with 1 or both feet. take head out of centerline while throwing overhand, weight on lead foot 4. their straight right will beat your overhand 5. lean head back to avoid the overhand right, can block with wrist up to ear (but will still do dmg) 6. gate block: can raise arm and hit their forearm with elbow, tuck chin and protect with shoulder

Hey Shane, this question isn't relevant to this video but how can you take a shot to the body without getting gassed straight away? Every time I spar and my sparring partner gets me in the body I instantly get gassed out. I always protect my body but once someone lands that body shot I end up getting so tired to the point where I'm basically just keeping my guard up the rest of the round without throwing punches. Is there anything I can do to avoid this weakness in sparring?
